To be fair, Skarpi, I had to dust off my dictionary and look up at least one out of every three words, especially because of the trouble I have recognizing particular forms of words.

Anyhow, I'm glad to hear that I got the meaning of what you wrote, although I don't have the grammar under my belt to write anything back.

(I might be really off-base, because I have no idea how
to decline nouns or conjugate verbs, so I had trouble
recognizing some words.)

Personally, I'm more partial to fried slices of leftover blóðmör,
hot flatkökur with kæfa on it, or kjötsúpa; basically the stuff I
eat when I'm at my grandmother's flat, or my aunt's farm. It
seems like foods and holidays are the only things I recognize.

BTW - What's the name of the white five-layer-cake with rhubarb jam,
or the brown one with icing between thin sheets of crumbly,
buttery sweet dough?

Would it be all right if I took a crack at posting
an attempted translation of what you wrote?

I'm away at school, so I rarely get the opportunity
to hear or read Icelandic, and as I said, I am horrible
at it. My older siblings can all speak it, but my father
got sick when my brother and I were younger, and
would hardly speak at all, let alone teach us Icelandic.
So, I don't want to impose myself upon you, but would
you mind correcting me if I were to post an attempt
at translating?

In the beginning of Mýrin,
the lullaby that Örn starts singing
to his daughter in the hospital,
and which transitions to a haunting
graveside performance by an older,
male choir, is Sofðu unga ástin mín.

Although you can find versions of it
in many places, even amateur
performances on youtube, Mugison
arranged the version that you heard
specifically for the film, so you would
probably want to buy the soundtrack
from a site like .

A significant portion of website has
English support. Unfortunately, even
thought I bought and downloaded the
album specifically for that track,
it was the one track that had poor
audio quality. It sounded like fuzzy,
like it was coming through really
crappy speakers whenever the choir
swelled into that sad, beautiful harmony.

The album is still well worth the money,
however, and the tónlist.is downloads
are 192 kbps, with your choice of 3
file formats, and you can download
anything you've purchased several times,
without buying it again, which, with the
cost of bandwidth in Iceland, is quite
generous. Also, many Icelandic artists'
music videos are available for free viewing
via quicktime, plug-in, so if you have QT Pro,
or know what you're doing, it's really easy
to save the videos to your HDD and to extract
the audio.

I don't like to sound like a promoter for
anyone, so I'm repeating that the audio
on that lullaby is hardly perfect, but
I also have some bias toward supporting
Icelandic artists and businesses. So,
anyway, check it out, if you're still
interested, and good luck.

I might mention that being in the euro hasn't helped Ireland to avoid the worst recession in Europe, Skarpi, as the multinationals feck off with themselves to places where people work for a tenth our wages.

Worse still, being in the euro - or rather, being under the control of the European Central Bank - has meant that a profit-crazy housing boom couldn't be controlled by the normal method of raising interest rates. Our interest rates were set by the ECB, which sets them for the whole of Europe.

Of course, our government should have used other methods to stop the spiralling house prices, but as a series of tribunals into corruption and bribery by builders have shown, many of those in government were in the pay of property developers.

Now the citizens who pay these politicians €100,000 a year basic wage, plus benefits and perks, are seeing the fruits of electing these corrupt swine.

Sorry, sorry, I'll calm down.

Having watched the vid, I am revising my advice that you ask Bára Grímsdóttir to sing this piece of schmalz during Funi's current tour. They have far more authentic Icelandic music than that (as on their MySpace site linked to in my previous post). As for the brief clip of activities other than fishing 58" into the YouTube clip, it reminded me of links which used to appear then disappear regularly on this site of people looking extremely bored whilst engaged in them, though I guess they didn't get paid much so why go to the effort of looking as if they were enjoying themselves? Still, I suppose Icelanders need something to take their minds off the sinking krona.

Jeepers, Iceland's economy is in freefall! I've been reading articles about the genetic database, and that led me on to looking at the state of the economy. They're in trouble deep.

deCODE, the company that holds the national genetic database, ran into privacy issues, the government got cold feet (is there a gene for cold feet?) and the company's stocks plunged.

(Not surprising; I found a quote by its boss saying that if a gene linked to a near-certainty of heart attacks in African-Americans was wiped out, a good proportion of heart attacks wouldn't happen... a statement that feeds right into people's fears about Big Brother.)

The krona has lost 22% of its value against the euro since January 1, and speculators are targeting the currency.

I hope those Lochlannach up there aren't getting out their longboats and putting sheep fat on them ready to sail. Note to self: must hide that gold chalice.

The only Icelandic lullaby I've ever heard is a poem by Halldór Laxness Ã쳌slenskt Vögguljóð with a melody collected in Reykjavik from Jakobîna Thorarensen. Bára Grímsdóttir sings it on the CD Funi. Together with Chris Foster, she is currently touring in the UK. Miss them at your peril. Go and she might do the lullaby for you.

I've just been at the film Jar City (extraordinary - don't miss it) and loved the lullaby at the beginning. Anyone (Skarpi?) know what it's called, if there are recordings of it, and what the words mean?
