From: katlaughing
Date: 01 Jan 09 - 12:21 AM

As Maggie said in the new de-clutter thread, we've done this for almost a year and it seems like an anniversary. We've all survived 2008 with all of the turbulent times it brought and the Hope we have all pinned our own stars to coming up with the new year and new leadership. We've learned to be kind to ourselves, that we each have different abilities and we can support one another in beautiful friendship. I am really proud of us all and i hope you are, too.

With that in mind, please feel free to post your goals here for the new month of January in the NEW YEAR!

Goals - qi gong every other day
free weights = ditto
walking - ditto

not all on the same days:-)

I'm headed to bed after a few more chores and after several trips to the attic. No way to quantify the exercise (minimal), but the result will be noteworthy around here--solid Internet connectivity. I managed to fish a line through the wall (no mean feat!) for the wiring to my son's computer.

I am happy to say that nothing collapsed beneath me and I was able to climb (several times) over the ducts that run through the attic trussed space, so I suppose there was some agility training (of sorts!) this evening.

Have a good New Year, and let's hope that we all can visualise the shape we want to be in, and can simply default to the diet and lifestyle that will take us there before the next 12 months is out.

Maggie (SRS)

I'm going to get my very expensive bike out of the garage and actually RIDE it...when it warms up a little bit!

First weigh-in of the year on Monday night, so we will see what the seasonal excesses have done.
I think visualising the shape we want is a good idea. I want to be down a clothes size by this time next year. Properly down a size - not just shoe horning myself into stuff. There's a small but determined garden that needs a good overhauling, so no excuses!

Choosing 3 from 12

To change my bath taps for a shower mixer tap and retile the kitchen floor.
To cook something new each month.
To keep my home accounts on a spreadsheet to the same level I do for my clients.

Im off to make a carrot and banana cake for the new year (doesn't count as new as I've made it before).

Happy new year.

My goals are

1. To enjoy the journey as I intend to pass this way only once
2. To focus on small goals
3. To stop & think about what my body needs instead of wants
4. To join a new exercise class this month (Lookout Butts and Guts! Here I come!!!)
5. To improve my health as much as possible so I can be a strong, fit, energized Mommy.

To continue helping others reach their highest potential in whatever way I can contribute.

To be less wasteful of time, money, health and other things in short supply.

Two small goals...that should be enough for now.

This last week has had a fair number of sugary foods and candy around the house. I've given away or frozen most of it now, and I find the easiest way to go cold turkey from that easy sugar addiction is to go a few days on the Scarsdale Diet. The diet itself doesn't work really well for me, but a few days on it helps to kick the sugar cravings out of my brain.

Breakfast this morning was a toasted slice of whole wheat bread (baked last night before bed, so it was beautifully fresh!), apple slices, and a pot of Yorkshire Gold tea (Micca got us hooked on that, he sent some as Moonglow's Secret Santa a few years back).

This is the first day I have birds at the kitchen garden feeder (I put it up earlier in the week) and today I will get some exercise on behalf of birds--I'm going to dig a hole, mix some concrete, and put up my martin house.

Not much in new goals-- the old ones are fine, and I don't trust the NY Res phenomenon. But I will note that I have, for some time now, been officially looking for ways to fund getting rid of some skin.

The "new" thing is that I am cleared to run a big-ass snowblower, so we went and got a good one yesterday. I ahve taken charge of its deployment and have advised Hardi that we will not go look for his ab bench toimorrw and plow today-- we will make the long drive to go look today, in chilly sunlight. We'll plow tomorrow when it will be a few degrees warmer.

And I just found the great hat my son apparently left here, which I need to wear when we clear snow. !~!~!

I'm cleared now to drive, too, so it's back to daylight pool time.

Good for you, Susan!

Slow starting here. Did get some walking done today. Forgot to weigh myself in first thing; with clothes on and fresh food and water on board, I went up another pound. I will wait and weigh in tomorrow morning to see how accurate that is.

Today's my second day without a cigarette. It's not exactly a resolution, but I suppose it's good for something.

If I could lose 30 pounds this year, that would be great.

I hope to start walking more, once it warms up.

Lots of hip openers and thigh builders (and man you should see my thighs..WOO HOO!....now if I could only get my abs and arms so toned!

Namaste!

So far this year, on my journey to work I have walked to and from the station every day.

I'd be proud of that but I've only been at work for one day!

It's vacuuming this morning, and by the smell of it we had a visiting cat last night so that's the carpet cleaner coming out as well....

Ho hum... that should do for a couple of ounces... which would be fantastic as my scales here tell me I'm very close to that elusive 'under 15 stones' mark.... be still, my beating heart!

Had a really long walk today... around London, during a Demo against the bombing of Gaza in Trafalgar Square today. Been years since I was on a political rally of any kind. It was a lovely day for walking, if the reason was not so lovely. Never got round to the housework so I suspect that's tomorrow's task.

Good for you for going to that, LtS! I haven't done much of anything today. It's strange. I can *feel* my body wanting to be worked and I mean to, but it passes and I don't. I think partly because they have spooked me about being careful because of certain diagnoses. I think going to a PT will help with that. So, I'll stick to the qi gong and see what happens after that. My feet DO feel much better!!

This week I have switched to a few days of the Scarsdale Diet. I didn't explain much earlier, but it is a simple plan with toasted whole wheat bread and fresh fruit for breakfast, a simple lunch (lunch meat, veggies or fruit) and a simple dinner (usually meat, veggie, bread). The book has variations for vegetarians, etc.

Yesterday I took the dogs for a nice long walk. Today I spent a fair amount of time climbing in and out of the beams in my attic. It was kind of like Yoga--moving carefully through a precarious place, holding positions while I worked, moving back out again. Several repetitions.

My goals, before they get any more numerous.

1 - get some more weight off, shooting for 30 pounds by this time next year; and help the big guy come down in weight too

2 - get organized and de-cluttered enough to get to at least some of my 'someday' projects

3 - do at least a few desperately needed home maintenance/improvement projects

I only managed to re-gain 6 lbs over the holidays! (:( BUT I went out into the garden to-day to fill several poly bags with leaves for mulch. Ha! Frozen weren't they. Did a load of raking and tidying, not to be outdone.
Ann is back at the Salsacise and recipes class on Wednesday so it's "Get thee behind me, calories" Sounds like I want a fat arse, don't it!.
I'll be back to a bit of brisk walking as well. The gyms here have blasting music and televisions so I may do some weight training stuff at home. I WILL be back to 15st10 soon and then it's all systems go to get into my optimistic jeans.
Am I the only male here?
Keep it up everybody

Accountability to me means not only shedding the extra weight but also tending to other medical issues to keep my body healthy. In that light, I took myself to the Dr. this morning because I have an inkling that my medication level is off. She listened to me and acted on what I had told her. She said, "You know your body best!" (I love my new doc, can you tell?) She asked if she could take some blood and so I had some blood work done and left the office with a free 30 day sample of the upped dosage that I think is going to do the trick.

I hate needles. I hate being unhealthy more. I'm all proud of myself.

Good for you Michelle - especially in finding a doc that will listen to you!

Bavis - new faces are always welcome!

We got Limpit a Wii for Christmas, it came with the sports package (no balance board yet, that's probably the birthday present sorted), but I've been doing the training - apparently I'm up this week, from 80 to 60. I know it looks like those scores are going the wrong way, but those figures represent years. I've gone from being as fit as an octagenerian to being as fit as a sexegenerian. A lot of it is because I read the manual and now know where I went wrong with me nunchucks.

Official weigh in tonight.. we'll see what I put on over Christmas, even though I'm convinced her scales lie.

Been walking a lot this week though, through the house several times with armloads of garden trash, up and down at the tip to unload and dispose, and to and from the station. They've put the rail fares up again so I may pretty soon be walking to work - it's the only way I'll be able to afford to soon!

Moving furniture (piano/cupboards) to prime walls in the living room. Soon to check out a new exercise DVD that I (requested by me) received for Christmas.

I am now currently an expectant mom (adopting and expecting 2 children!) and am no longer working. I'm almost afraid of being at home and how easily it would be to fall back to old habits and end up over 300 pounds again. I've shared my concern with a few friends and am happily surprised at how supportive everyone is. A built is support system....one of real friends, not just those I see once a week at weigh in. I was driving one of those friends to the Dr. this morning and we were talking about weight loss and I shared my concern with her. She tapped my shoulder hard, several times and said, "I'm right here, always with you." Kinda sweet, no?

Anyway, it feels good to know others are willing to be a part of my journey. A new routine is always hard but I CAN DO THIS!!! :) I refuse to be a couch potato or a slug that just lingers around the house. I have a life to live and babies to prepare for!!!!!!!!! :)

Michelle

Had a good workout session with the Wii and Limpit this afternoon.

Now I'm not into computer games as such, but I bought the 'Ravin Rabbids' game... and boy does it get you moving!

You earn points by shooting rampaging chickens - which is always good for stress relief (unless you're the chicken), "playing" along with various tunes (waving the remote/nunchuck around to make the instrument sound - impossible to do it with small movements and they have such classics as 'Born to be wild' and 'I'm no good', "dance" to the Jackson's 'ABC' or 'Le Freak', which is a definate get up and move around one, or just generally bounce up and down. Lots of movement, a good cardiac workout but murder on the elbows. The points are only a way of keeping score - Limpit is thrashing me, but it's all good fun and gets us moving around! It also provides a good laugh for anyone passing along the road outside - must remember to pull the curtains next time.

Oh, and I got my Wii Sport training age down from 54 to 45 - not bad seeing as how I was 80 on Boxing Day!

Yesterday, 2 hours snowblowing. One hour on the old electric one to allow Hardi to come home from Sat. night snowy sleepover at church for Sunday services. The other hour, my turn on the new big machine (after he started it for our first time and got it off the porch). Great to be back in my old barn boots working in the cold-- but then, that's just me. :~)

Much more walking and much less lower-back pain than I thought I could do-- good news.

45 minutes of a new class I joined, Cardio Funk...lots of heart-pounding fun, dancing...loud thumping music...loved it!

One mile walk outside with my Mom and her dog.

Treadmill is about to be fired up (I'm shooting for over 10,000 steps a day and my pedometer currently reads 8,928).

Michelle

PS. Just so you know, I didn't trip over my feet during any of the dance steps...not even the backwards moving ones...didn't get tangled up in the dog's leash either...but walking down the hill to my house, maybe 15 feet from the door....BAM...down on my ass I went. I am within 5 pounds of reaching 200 lb., on the way down. I need to remember not to try crash dieting or anything to reach it; just sensible eating and exercise when I can. Meant to go through packed away clothes today but with nice weather that didn't happen.

I've been on a "liquid diet" today, leading up to the salt-water jug tomorrow morning and the colonoscopy in the early afternoon. I was going to say "after lunch," except that would mess it all up, wouldn't it? :)

I had to find something to fill my stomach today, this liquid diet stuff, even with yogurt during the day, isn't easy. I ended up picking up a milk shake at McDonalds. Too sweet, but at least now I'm comfortable. And since I'm on a liquid diet I did give myself permission to have one glass of wine--white, of course!

I'll keep any eye on this thread, and if I get to the point where I'm working on the garden or other good exercise I may start reporting in more regularly. I know how to find you if I decide to look into the Google group.

I hope Max finds a house and a good Internet set-up soon!

A good 5-6 hours in the garden today, erecting a fence which involved digging out old posts, hammering in new ones, nailing fence panels to the posts and nailing trellis to the panels... not to mention all the excavating and laying down of hardcore to provide a firm surface.

My wrists are suffering now, but a couple of hand braces are sorting that... it's my elbows I can't figure out how to support now!

Still, all that digging and carrying stuff through the house should have moved a couple of pounds... it certainly shifted more than a few pounds of rubble, slate (an old fireplace surround which was very pretty by the look of it), bricks and concrete! Tomorrow I have to shovel it all into the car and take it to the tip.

Inbetween the station and the bus stop is a KFC... It's been months since I had popcorn chicken....

Today has begun badly and will probably get worse.

You are allowed the odd treat Liz, don't be so hard on yourself, you are doing great, although I could swear at you now as I have a craving for KFC!!!

Yesterday I did a 4 mile walk and an hours LBT class. Oh My! the instructor worked us hard and I can definitely feel parts of me I thought were lost for good.

I'm having a restful day today with the children as Harry has a streaming cold and hacking cough.

Yesterday I was pain-free and managed almost 3 miles on the treadmill, then another hour's walking around various stores and drumming on a new drum with Morgan which required dancing and bouncing around. It was a blast! Also did some qi gong. Haven't felt so fit in ages.

LtS, I had a day like that last week. Just start over, tomorrow. It'll be okay.

Everybody's right Liz -- the occasional falling off the wagon isn't the end of your plan.

One rule of thumb: the acronym HALT -- we are all vulnerable when we are:

Hungry
Angry
Lonely
Tired

This has helped me a lot when I get cravings.

Thinking about all the transfats in fast food also helps.

In that case I am

Frustrated
Unhappy
Concerned
Knackered
Exhausted and
Depressed.

Let it be, for a day or two, and take care of yourself. As I just said in the decluttering thread, you've been doing lots of EXTRA duty, so you are allowed time OFF to wallow, etc.

Doing good here on one goal, getting a few pounds off. Nine days of Atkins and walking-whatever-the-weather has chiseled 5.8 off so far. Have reached the point the carb cravings have subsided into the background, thank God.

As far as decluttering and home improvement, pretty much dead in the water. Perhaps I can find a way to get moving on that.

Even though it has only 2 more days to run, I don't want to see this thread drop off.

I'm working on 2 things:

skills inventory
exit strategy -- so I can leave a place wherre I am dreadfully unhappy.

At least it keeps me busy and gives me hope.

I have spent the last ump-de-ump hours pdating my resume and getting the paperwork for one very desirable job.

The competition is of course very stiff; as one guy on the radio put it, they used to settle for 7 out of 10 points; now they want 10 out of 10, and they can get it.

I feel good having gotten one done; feel like I'm out pounding the pavements again.

And at size 1X instead of 3X it's a lot more likely.

Wish me luck.

Wow, that is excellent progress, MAG!! Congrats on the resume and the 3x>1X!!!

Softball and other games with Morgan, today, about 40 minutes or more.

Now I just gotta get my taxes done ...

I also gotta get my house ready to put on the market in case a miracle happens and I succeed in getting another job in a (much) more desirable location.

Like I said, it hasn't happened in 10 years so I'm not crossing my fingers.

When I feel really down I go buy a lottery ticket. A minuscule hope, but a small ray nevertheless.

Good results people!! Especially the month with no cigarettes Maire-aine, think how easy it's going to be from now on...

I spent a great deal of money today... well, this month actually..

I am now the proud owner of 16 new books and a Wii Fit Balance Board.

The Wii Fit is great fun and keeps a record of progress, so I should be able to post a more accurate account. I'm aiming for a couple of hours a week at the moment. 20 minutes today and I've already dropped my BMI by half a point! A small step, but it's in the right direction! It tells me that although I am overweight (and it's not helped by the little 'ow' noise that the Wii makes when you step on the balance board), I have good posture, my balance is good and I have the fitness of a 36yr old!

(I also managed to beat Limpit on hula hooping, jogging and the ski jump, but that's another story!)

The 16 books will keep my brain occupied and encourage some decluttering of the bookshelves whilst I recover from the jogging!

LtS, I just looked a short demo video about the Wii Fit Balance Board. What is the difference between it and watching a video of an instructor taking you through yoga moves or whatever? I am not doubting, just wondering what it is about it. Night Owl's 97 mother loves her Wii and goes bowling on it regularly, but I guess I am still not understanding how they work and why.:-)

As you say, great progress everyone. Maryanne, congrats!! I did not lose as much as I could have since Christmas, but I have slowly been working my way back to not going over my weekly points and being more active. It helps that the feet have improved!

Any nominations for next month's thread name?
