In the beginning was the Word.

And the Word was aardvark.

(I'll get my Barbour . . . )

Looking through this and the other aardvark threads, I notice that none of the songs presented tries to find a rhyme for aardvark. Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. When I lived in Buffalo, New York, I would occasionally go to Artpark when it put on some entertainer I wanted to hear - I remember hearing Joan Baez there, and also Beausoleil. I tried to write a song about Artpark at the time, but the only rhyme I could find for it was aardvark. I guess card shark would work.

There's a folk club in Belper? How I wish I'd known that when I spent a week in Blackbrook back in 2002.

The Ed Silberman one seems to be missing a couple of syllables in the last line!

Also you shouldn't treat "The Blue Danube" that way. I now have a mental image of a caveman throwing a bone into the air, and it slowly morphs into an arrdvark spinning silently in space!

Must get my medication checked!

Cheers
Nigel

The Belper (Derbyshire) folk club, in the dim and distant past, used to be nicknamed the Aardvark.
Frequently we would sing "Aardvark Riding", which is just Donkey Riding with the word changed.
Best wishes to the team that run the Belper club today.
Dave.
"Hey Ho! and away we go, aardvark riding, aardvark riding..."

I once wrote a song parody, strictly for local consumption, about the strategy that the lawyer Bob Aaron adopted to guarantee that his practice's listing occupied its rightful first place in the alphabetical list of lawyers in the Toronto phone directory. My work included these four lines:

Unlike the aardvark, a beast that eats termites,
All Aarons find two "A"s sufficient,
Spelled that way in bibles for six hundred years,
Long before the one King James commissioned.

I got an aardvark who is rather randy
He is anybodys when he drinks brandy
We took him to the zoo today
He wanted to have his wicked way

Chorus
Av you got an aard on vaaaark
Av you got an aard on vaaaark
Time to take your bromide mate
Before you screw the village gate

I remember "The Large Dark Aardvark" song from childhood and sang it at our local sing just this past Tuesday. (We had seriously deteriorated at that point in the evening, dredging up the silliest love songs we could manage.) The lyrics are already posted on the thread of the same name.

When God made creation, the seas had crustaceans, the dry land had forests and woods,
And very soon mammals like horses and camels came issuing forth from the primeval mud,
And when it was right, He said: Let there be light! and there was, 'cause he'd left nowt to luck,
And the first thing He sees when He looks down is me, and in His angelic voice he went: Yuk!

CHORUS:
It's aadvark being an aadvark,
It's a lot harder than you might think
All day on your pins you are trying to convince
A hard uncaring world you're not really extinct.
No-one says: Oh look, there's an aadvark!
Like they might do a camel or cat.
They just give us a kick or a poke with a stick,
And they say: What the hell d'you call that?

If you ask a zebra what gives him most pleasure, he might say: Life on the savannah.
Seems he don't give a toss that he looks like a cross between an old horse and an upright pianna.
When kids at the zoo get their first view of the zebra, they always go: Aah!
But when they see me they react diff'rently, and that is what makes life so hard.

Ask a giraffe and he'll say it's no laugh, being twenty foot high is a bind.
Though he sees all the trees with the greatest of ease, he can't get to scratch his own - well never mind!
And he'll stamp and say: Heck! It's a pain in the neck! And I couldn't say he was wrong.
Wouldn't you get self-righteous if you got tonsilitis, and your tonsils were ten foot six long?

Now take the hyena, 'cause he must have been at the back when they gave the brains out.
He'll giggle all day in that lunatic way, and he hasn't a clue what he's laughing about.
There was one got a shock when he fell in the wok in a Chinese café in Bangkok,
But the chef being no ass, simply turned up the gas, and he made a complete laughing stock.

Now your aadvark's quite mild, he's not vicious or wild, he's renowned for being timid and shy,
They don't go in for fighting or scratching or biting, they won't armadillo or even a fly,
They'll run and fetch sticks and do silly tricks, like Lie Down And Play Dead For The King,
And you'd never regret having one as a pet, then there'd be one less of us to sing:

My computer wont play the His worshipp and the Pig one well enough for me to tell if it is the same one that a chap at our local folk club sings. Unfortunately the only line from taht that I can remember is something like 'people dont say oh look there's an aardvaark as they might to a camel or ?'

I know Ed's version -- in fact I talked him into going to Aardvark Books in San Francisco and singing it with me. They said, "That was very nice. Now, don't do it again." Kids love it.

The Aardvark Song

It starts with an "A" (Aardvark, aardvark)
It ends with a "K" (Aardvark, aardvark)
Not easy to say (Aardvark, aardvark)
But try anyway (Aardvark, aardvark)
Eats ants everyday (Aardvark, aardvark)
At work or at play (Aardvark, aardvark)
You spell it this way: double "A"
"R-D-V-A-R-K" (Aardvark)

I don't know who wrote this gem. It may have been Ed himself.

Ed Silberman sings one to the tune of "Blue Danube Waltz."I thought I posted it, but I can't find it.
    It begins with an "A"
    Aardvark, Aardvark
    And ends with a "K"
    Aardvark, Aardvark
...and that's all I can remember. I e-mailed him and asked him to stop by.

Oh lovely! As it happens there's a sound sample of "The Aardvark Song" on the His Worship and the Pig "songs" page, and it is a delightful ditty. Thank you!

Sadly Faldingworth is a bit far from Northern California, or I'd be there for Pete Coe as well!

The Aardvark Song (His Worship and the Pig)http://www.hisworshipandthepig.org.uk/index.html

In fact Mr & Mrs Sooz (AKA Stitherum) do a very good job of this song from Gainsborough Folk Club.

I don't have the lyrics, but if you want to hear His Worship & The Pig do it live then come to Faldingworth Live

Recently, while testing our forum filter, a Mudcatter of some renown was unable to find a single thread with the word "aardvark" in its title. Shocking, really, what with the wealth of aardvark-related musical material out there ripe for the picking, as it were (not to mention the BS potential of the subject).

So I found this song 'ere. There's a link on the source page stating that one can e-mail the songwriter for an MP3 version.

Cheers,
Claire

AARDVARK
Music and Words (c) 2002 MARK FREY

The sun, the moon, the stars and the planets
all hang around in the sky
if you stare at a solar eclipse without protection
you'll probably burn out your eye

but that's not the reason I'm singing this tune
no it isn't connected at all
I just stuck it in as an opening verse
to keep the whole thing from being too small

this song is in fact about Aardvarks
yes of Aardvarks today I will sing
but Aardvarks are curious creatures
about which I know almost nothing

Aardvarks are hairy burrowing mammals
with a blunt-ended snout
they dig little holes all over Africa
and have no political clout

now I'm reaching the ends of my knowledge
and don't really know where to go
I finally see why they always tell you
to write about things that you know

this song is in fact about Aardvarks
yes of Aardvarks today I will sing
but Aardvarks are curious creatures
about which I know almost nothing

for the last verse I looked some Aardvark facts up
isn't the internet great?
now I know Aardvarks are basically loners
only getting together to mate

(Interlude)

Your average Aardvark lives about 10 years
and can't run very fast
they have strong claws to help in digging for termites
which I'm told are their favorite repast

They've got tubular teeth and come out at night
their tongues are quite sticky and long
their name means "earth-pig" but if you should think
they're related to porkers then you would be wrong

this song is in fact about Aardvarks
yes of Aardvarks today I will sing
but Aardvarks are curious creatures
about which I know almost nothing
