Subject: BS: I know y'all will miss me From: Rapparee Date: 03 Mar 09 - 08:52 PM ...but I'll be back before you know it. Tomorrow I'm off to the Land of Snakes and Sham Rocks: Ireland. If you're in Cork or Kenmare or Castlegregory or I'm-not-sure-where perhaps you'll have an overweight, glasses-wearing American in your pub session. If that person orders Budweiser it'll be someone else, if he orders Bud Lite you can be CERTAIN it's not me. Kick them out into the rain. I'll be leaving The Auld Sod on 13th since I have to be back at w**k on the 16th. So unless you hear from me sooner I'm off to various places yet to be named in the green, in the green, my credit cards glitterin' in the sun. When I return I should have some Interesting News for the denizens of the Mudcat Cafe. (No, I'm not pregnant.) |

Subject: RE: BS: I know y'all will miss me From: Lonesome EJ Date: 03 Mar 09 - 10:26 PM May you be picked up at the airport by a wee man in buckle shoes, who'll doff his top hat and shout "welcome to the Emerald Isle, Lad! Have a snootful of me auld poteen!" After which, he will snap his whip over a team of white harses, and you will be transported to a magical land of shamrocks, leprechauns, and laughing colleens who will offer you delightful green bars of soap to keep you fresh, and clean! Clean as a whistle! May you be serenaded by uillean pipes and bodhrans, and tucked gently beneath a downy coverlet by a sweet old lady named Mary McKenna, as the sun goes down outside over Galway Bay. May your nights be shrouded in a soft aire, while banshees croon softly in the distance. And in the morning may you be served rashers of thick bacon and cauldrons of steamy oatmeal, and a small glass of Jamesons's to help you forget about the banshees. HAVE A GREAT TRIP, RAPAIRE!! ;>) |

Subject: RE: BS: I know y'all will miss me From: Rapparee Date: 04 Mar 09 - 07:59 AM Bobert, I kissed the Blarney Stone back in 1978 when I was young and supple (I have grown better looking in the following years, however). I'll do that, Kendall. As mg intimates, my wife's family is from Dingle. It might be a bit out of the town limits these days since the beach IN TOWN is pretty much covered by wharves, buildings, cops and such. |

Subject: RE: BS: I know y'all will miss me From: Noreen Date: 04 Mar 09 - 08:55 AM You MUST drink Guinness when in Ireland. However good it tasts elsewhere, it is far better on home turf :0) Oh and see Trinity College library, they've got some old stuff in there... Have a wonderful time! Is the news that you plan to retire to Ireland??! N |

Subject: RE: BS: I know y'all will miss me From: Stu Date: 04 Mar 09 - 09:25 AM If you're in Dingle then head down the road to Inch Strand and marvel at the wonder of it all (although I've heard they've built a cafe there now). When I was at school I handed in an English assignment and the teacher (who was excellent but deeply sarcastic), in an attempt to humiliate me when handing the papers back said "Jack, you must have kissed the Blarney Stone" and I replied "Actually sir, I have". Not sure I would now though - can you still do it with all the leaning back over the drop etc? Also, it's worth getting up early for a stroll along the Kenmare River at dawn. Aside from the rumours there's no Irish in my family as far as I know but arriving at that place for the first time felt like coming home. |

Subject: RE: BS: I know y'all will miss me From: olddude Date: 04 Mar 09 - 10:58 AM kendall I actually did that and the exact song when I last visited we were having lunch and a guiness with friends and he brought his guitar ... great minds think alike. I can't believe you said that Visit, Killarney National forest ... love it and the burren Gosh I love that place, there are small flowers in the Burren that grow no were else on earth. My kids and I have wandered up and down it for years when I visted a lot ... The dolman .. still presses my buttons |

Subject: RE: BS: I know y'all will miss me From: katlaughing Date: 04 Mar 09 - 11:08 AM My French-Canadian first generation mother-in-law, a woman I cherished dearly, went to visit with my sister-in-law, when she was in her 70s AND she kissed the Blarney Stone! They really enjoyed their visit. |

Subject: RE: BS: I know y'all will miss me From: DougR Date: 04 Mar 09 - 11:13 AM Olddude cautioned you to stay away from the sheep. I would suggest that you be particularly cautious if driving at night when the sheep love to sleep on the wee roads. Have fun. DougR |

Subject: RE: BS: I know y'all will miss me From: olddude Date: 04 Mar 09 - 11:34 AM No kidding when I go there and come home. I don't know if I am coming home or visiting. When I am in Ireland I feel like that is where I belong. I cherish the place, the people ... no matter how many times I never get tired of it.. also watch for the darn tour busses, they drive really really fast and the roads are terribly narrow. I have been shoved off the road more times than I can count. Don't drive to Dublin, take the train ... much more fun and a lot less hassel |
