Subject: Obit: Bud Shank From: Cool Beans Date: 07 Apr 09 - 05:05 PM Alto sax and flute player Bud shank died at 82. Besides being a fine jazz musician he played the flute solo on "California Dreaming." Yes, THAT guy. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/07/arts/music/07shank.html?hpw |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bud Shank From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 07 Apr 09 - 07:18 PM One of my all-time favorite jazz CDs is Brazilliance with Bud Shank and Laurindo Almeida. I've probably listened to it a hundred times and it remains as fresh and as exciting as the first time I heard it. Shank was also a key player in Wst Coast Jazz in one of my favorite groups, Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars. Jerry |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bud Shank From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 07 Apr 09 - 07:27 PM Laurindo Almeida and Bud Shank brought Brazilian music to the attention of jazz aficionados quite some time before Charlie Byrd helped create the Bossa Nova craze in the early 1960's. I have records and CD's of both pairings and still enjoy them immensely. The Lighthouse, in Hermosa Beach, was a west coast bastion of jazz for years. Bud Shank was a mainstay and very much a part of the "west coast sound." Sad. So many of the players I saw, heard and enjoyed have left the scene. By the way, both guitarists influenced a lot of players, including those in the folk scene who wanted to refine finger style playing and take it to another level. Still trying. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Alto sax & flute player Bud Shank (Apr 2009) From: greg stephens Date: 08 Apr 09 - 05:50 AM I used to love Bud Shank's duets with Bob Cooper. Extraordinary interplay. I was not totally in love with West Coast cool jazz, but those two were brilliant. And didn't they play with Jim Hall too? A legendary guitarist. I would imagine a surprising number of folkies would like Bud Shank and his many and varied experiments: a great man. |
