My mother--now dead--had a plant growing in her kitchen. It was curling off the eight-foot high ceiling. She thought it strange that my brother took such good care of that plant. She told me he trimmed it regularly and pinched the leaves. He had her convinced it was an ornamental shrub. I hated to disillusion the old gal, but I did offer to get rid of it for her. And I burned the evidence. Musta used about twenty packs of ZigZags. What a week (or maybe month). Can't be sure.

That's generalizing a bit much, BobtP. I have a friend who has grown her stuff in a closet for years. And where there is one, there is another and another and another...

RI Senate approves marijuana stores

Updated: Wednesday, 10 Jun 2009, 11:03 AM EDT
Published : Tuesday, 09 Jun 2009, 5:35 PM EDT

Nancy Krause
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A bill that would allow nonprofit stores in Rhode Island to sell marijuana to medical patients is headed to the governor's desk. The state Senate passed the bill Tuesday afternoon by a 30-2 margin.

The bill has already passed the House and now heads to Governor Donald Carcieri for approval. The governor vetoed similar legislation last year.

If it becomes law, the bill would allow so-called compassion centers to sell marijuana to registered patients with debilitating illnesses. Right now, 680 patients are registered with the Department of Health's medical marijuana program.

State lawmakers approved the use of medical marijuana in 2006, however they never legalized the sale of the drug. Under the current bill, Rhode Island would be the third state in the country and the first on the East Coast to approve marijuana dispensaries for medical patients.

"Sick patients and their caregivers shouldn't have to risk their safety and deal with criminals to get the relief they need," said bill sponsor Senator Rhode Perry (D-Dist. 3, Providence). "Rhode Island was compassionate enough a few years ago to recognize the benefit of marijuana for those who are suffering, and I'm proud that we're now taking the next logical and necessary step and recognizing that patients need a safe, legal means to get it."

Governor Carcieri has a week to either sign the legislation or veto it. If he does nothing, the bill will automatically become law without his signature. The legislation passed each chamber with significantly more than the three-fifths majority necessary to override a veto.

Never use the stuff myself, but I think alanabit has the right of it.

The Book of Genesis had it all wrong.

God made Woman first. He made her with three breasts. She checked her reflection in a nearby pool and said, "You know, God, that looks a bit strange. I think two would be quite enough. You know, nicely symmetrical and all that."

God, being Omniscient, knew better than to argue with a Woman, so He put her into a deep sleep and removed the middle breast. When she woke up, she checked her reflection again and said, "Yes, that's much better, thank you."

God stood there with the extra breast in His hand and thought, "Now, what can I do with a useless boob?"

Then God made man.

(05-18) 12:13 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- California's medical marijuana law survived its most serious legal challenge today as the U.S. Supreme Court denied appeals by two counties that argued they were being forced to condone violations of federal drug laws.

The justices, without comment, denied a hearing to officials from San Diego and San Bernardino counties who challenged Proposition 215, an initiative approved by state voters in 1996 that became a model for laws in 12 other states. It allows patients to use marijuana for medical conditions with their doctor's recommendation.

The counties specifically objected to legislation requiring them to issue identification cards that protect holders from arrest by state or local police for possessing small amounts of marijuana for medical use.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the federal government can enforce its laws against marijuana to prosecute users and suppliers of the drug in California and the other 12 states. The Obama administration has said it will target only traffickers who violate state as well as federal laws, although it has not stopped U.S. attorneys from raiding dispensaries that operate with local government approval.

Prop. 215 remains in effect despite federal enforcement efforts that began as soon as it passed. In the counties' case, the Supreme Court left intact a state ruling last year that said California remains free to decide whether to punish drug users under its own laws." SF Chronicle

"SAN FRANCISCO — On Monday, somewhere in New York City, 420 people will gather for High Times magazine's annual beauty pageant, a secretly located and sold-out event that its sponsor says will "turn the Big Apple into the Baked Apple and help us usher in a new era of marijuana freedom in America."

David Perleberg sold pro-marijuana T-shirts at the forum, including one that shows the university's buffalo mascot inhaling.

They will not be the only ones partaking: April 20 has long been an unofficial day of celebration for marijuana fans, an occasion for campus smoke-outs, concerts and cannabis festivals. But some advocates of legal marijuana say this year's "high holiday" carries extra significance as they sense increasing momentum toward acceptance of the drug, either as medicine or entertainment.

"It is the biggest moment yet," said Ethan Nadelmann, the founder and executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance in Washington, who cited several national polls showing growing support for legalization. "There's a sense that the notion of legalizing marijuana is starting to cross the fringes into mainstream debate."" NYT

Dr Hook...

I was sitting in my basement I just rolled myself a taste
Of something green and gold and glorious to get me through the day
Then my friend yelled through the transom "Grab your coat and get your hat son
There's a nut down on the corner, givin' dollar bills away"

But I laid around a bit
Then I had another hit
Then I rolled myself a bauma
Then I thought about my mama
Then I fooled around, played around
Jacked around a while and then

I got stoned and I missed it
I got stoned and I missed it
I got stoned and it rolled right by
I got stoned and I missed it
I got stoned and I missed it
I got stoned oh me oh my

Now it took seven months of urging just to get that local virgin
With the sweet face up to my place to fool around a bit
Next day she woke up rosy and she snuggled up so cosy
When she asked me how I liked it Lord it hurt me to admit

I was stoned and I missed it
I was stoned and I missed it
I was stoned and it rolled right by
I was stoned and I missed it
I was stoned and I missed it
I was stoned oh me oh my

Now I ain't makin' no excuses for the many things I uses
Just to sweeten my relationships and brighten up my day
But when my earthly race is over and I'm ready for the clover
And they ask me how my life has been I guess I'll have to say

I was stoned and I missed it
I was stoned and I missed it
I was stoned and it rolled right by
I was stoned and I missed it
I was stoned and I missed it
I was stoned oh me oh my

From the Toronto Sun on Sunday.

It may not be the official first day of spring, but tomorrow is the first day pot smokers will come out of hibernation.

Hundreds of marijuana advocates are expected to flood College Park between 2 and 4:20 p.m. to celebrate "4/20 Day" -- a rally to "publicly puff down" current marijuana laws.

"It's our first awakening," said Toronto Hash Mob founder Davin Christensen. "We're getting out of the house and showing everyone that the stoners haven't gone away. It's just a nice community gathering."

The expression 4/20 refers to marijuana consumption and April 20 is known to pot smokers as the international cannabis holiday. Christensen, 31, said organizers chose College Park because the address is 420 Yonge St.

Demonstrators are sending a message to Ottawa to repeal the marijuana possession law in Canada.

Right now, it's illegal to import, export, produce, sell or possess marijuana under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, unless one applies to the government to use it for medicinal purposes.

"There are so many people smoking (pot) now that it's unacceptable to enforce unjust drug laws," Christensen said.

"Prohibition and putting people in jail for a health issue is not the right approach and not the way we should be dealing with things now."

This is the third year Torontonians are celebrating 4/20 Day.

There are also big parties scheduled in Vancouver and California tomorrow, he said.

Organizers have also been promoting their protest on Twitter and Facebook.

"We might have some rain in the forecast," he said.

"But the first year, we had 500 people and then 2,000 the year after. Numbers should be able to grow each year."

"Question:- If pot is legalised... who will be authorised to sell it and will the prices be fixed? Also if the price is fixed then will there be a black market trade still??.... Also, when it was proven that cigarettes damage your health, people were suing the tobacco companies for misleading them about how good cigarettes are for you.... when the true figures of damaged persons due to pot comes to light, who will get sued for the pot smokers bad health??... Just a few thoughts there... your views welcome.
Best wishes, Mike."

Answers: We....the people who are trying to find some kind of middle ground, who translate it into language easily understood by all(even the government)!
The price doesn't have to be fixed in any way. Do you pay the same price for Crown Royal as you do for XXX!

Now that we have said "OK, now you can legally promote, purchase, posses and use cannabis and hemp products, we want you to be well aware of the facts! You could grow a third testicle or breast!
In using this product, you could also quite possibly be responsible for changing the world! We now live in a better place in regards to pollution, world hunger, textiles, building materials, health products, violence and countless other aspects of life on this planet. Excessive use of this product will make you remove the bullets from your gun!

Yeah, for plants grown in the "wild" about 3 ounces of bud is about all one can expect... Now tended plants will yield alot more, especially if you bed them down to the ground early and let about 6 fett of stalk become root...

The problem with tending plant is that those are the folks who get caught...

If you treat your plants(indica or sativa)like Gramma's roses, it's easy to get more than a pound a plant, but the average is more like a couple or three ounces. So I can see where the limits might seem high to some.
Is the best stuff grown in B.C. or California? Let the debate commence!
We've had two of the biggest busts in Canadian history in my neck of the woods. The first was decades ago and they got caught because it grew over top of the corn. The latest was found at the Molson brewery just to the south of us. And some of you wonder why Canadian beer is soooooooo good!

I believe that those flavoured filter cigarillos sold in individual plastic tubes were invented so that the packaging and distribution systems will be in place when legalisation finally happens. It'll be so sad when you have to buy your dope from General Mills and other mega-corps in the form of a factory-made blunt--but it'll be better than copping a criminal record, I suppose.

The reason I never smoked marijuana is that I watched the movie "Reefer Madness" and didn't want that to happen to me--jumping outta windows and shit like that. I will never forget that guy's hands as he took a toke of mj--his hands shaking like a sail in the wind, like jello on a wet dog, like leaves in a hurricane, like Suzette who used to dance at the corner bar, like houses in an earthquake, like a slinkie going down stairs, like elevators with broken cables, likeworms with bad dts, like tidal waves in the desert, like balloons in the air, like planes about to take off with their brakes applied so the don't really take off until the brakes are unapplied and then they do unless they run out of fuel that is bought from OPEC nations in war-torn parts of the world on CNN or FOX news if you have a TV and watch that stuff, like who DID kill JR and does anyone really give a rat's ass? I ask you--well, I won't again because I already did. Anyway, who else here likes Sara Lee? Just wondering.

Sixty-one seems the right age for this ol' boy. However, I'd invite ya all over. As GfS said, it's a pipe dream.

Thing is--QUALITY CONTROL. I personally have never smoked marijuana and I never will, but a friend of mine did and he told me all about it. Seems that back in the 1960s, the THC content of what people called 'grass' was an average of 5%. These days it's about 25%--from rumours I've heard. So, like, uh, five tokes then was like one toke now. Jaysus. Talk about changing spark plugs on Pluto.

If it ever IS legalized I'd suggest that those of you with a few bucks to invest look closely at purchasing stock in the Sara Lee company, or jujube manufacturers. Talk about yer bull markets on Wall Street.

And speaking of bulls, would the legalization of MaryJane extend to animals? Will this bring outrage from PETA? Will it then allow us to determine WHO put the bomp in the bomp sha bomp sha bomp? Will we finally find out who killed JR? Will we care? Stay tuned for uh, whatever.

[GfS, that was good.)

It *could* happen. The legalization of ethanol, in the U.S., happened with surprising suddenness at a time when it seemed politically impossible. There came a time (at the Democratic convention in 1932) when, essentially, some politicians on the platform committee dared to say "What the hell are we doing this for?" & risk antagonizing the Protestant clergy. Mencken was there, and he wrote an amusing story.

Yo, Bubblyrat,

As Alanbit said, what we are talking about here are "victimless crimes"... Musrder and rape are not victimless... There is the big difference between a guy smokin' a joint and a guy shootin' his neighbor...

B~

"One way would be to legalize everything with an age limit. Start at 70 maybe, and bring it down progressively."

How about 50? Just to start with?

Make all us old hippies happy, and it would mean that young people would be likely to see dope as akin to wearing carpet slippers.

Hemp is the way of the past, too - If Columbus' sails hadn't been hemp he'd have foundered half-way across...

I think Obama will come out as an atheist in his 7th year, too. On verra!

As a conservative ( any arguement?) I agree with John Campbell ( SF editor of Analog). All drugs should be legalized- BUT a person should be held responsible for their actions even if impaired by those drugs- just like alcohol. Drink all you want, but commit a crime while drunk and you should be punished- you chose to drink.#

Hemp is a great crop- Hemp cloth is far superior to cotton, Requirea lot less chemical ( ie, oil-based) fertilizer, insect resistant ( so no insecticides) and the methanol can be made from the residue left AFTER cloth/fiber production.

# One of JC's comments was that after a few generations, like Europeans and alcohol, those who could not control their use would kill themselves and their families off, so future generations would not have a significant problem with those drugs.
