Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: catspaw49 Date: 15 May 09 - 07:13 AM I'd suggest a Dogs Ass instead............ Why don't y'all try some good bourbon and give the bunnies a break? Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: Allan C. Date: 15 May 09 - 08:56 AM An old friend used to say, "If scotch were the only drink available in the world, I would never have become an alcoholic." I feel much the same way about gin, (except that I'm fortunate enough not to be an alcoholic - and God be with any who are.) Truth is, other than water, vodka is the only clear liquid that ever passes my lips. However, I'd much rather drink the browner stuff, such as good Irish whiskey. |
Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: catspaw49 Date: 15 May 09 - 09:07 AM Thank you Allan. I've always liked you and once again you come through on an important topic. The rabbits thank you as well................. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: Liz the Squeak Date: 15 May 09 - 10:47 AM What is it with the rabbits? On Portland (the original one, in Dorset, England and I do mean on, it's always been known as the isle...), you dursn't call 'em that, you must call 'em bunnies. Something to do with a superstition and the quarry there. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: maire-aine Date: 21 May 09 - 03:05 PM My favorite summer drink is also gin & Schweppes bitter lemon, and my local slightly-upscale market (near Detroit MI) carries it, along with most of the other Schweppes products. But now that I'm trying to cut calories, I use Schweppes diet tonic water with some lemon juice. Maryanne |
Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: topical tom Date: 22 May 09 - 12:37 PM I realize that it borders on the immoral but I prefer a vodka martini to a gin one.Recipe: 2 shots of vodka dry vermouth olives Pour the vodka into a martini glass, put in 3 olives on a swizzle stick, uncork (or uncap) the dry vermouth and waft the cork (cap) over the vodka and olives, then recork (recap) the bottle. Stir with affection. Et voilà! Nirvana! |
Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: Maryrrf Date: 22 May 09 - 02:58 PM When I was sixteen years old working at a soda fountain my boyfriend showed up with a bottle of gin. I had never had anything stronger than a small amount of beer or wine, and I had no idea about quantities, etc. I poured an indeterminate quantity into a grape soda, drank it, and proceeded to get very sick. I still remember my boyfriend stopping the car periodically and holding me by the back of my jeans while I leaned out of the car door and retched. I also remember sneaking up the stairs so my parents wouldn't realize anything was amiss, and the horrible sensation of lying in bed while the room spun around. To this day, I cannot stand gin. I can't even tolerate the smell. Ewwww...... |
Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: catspaw49 Date: 22 May 09 - 03:20 PM Probably didn't make you feel too kindly towards Grape Nehi either! But at least the rabbits could rest. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: Joe_F Date: 22 May 09 - 10:08 PM Tom: These days, the *default* seems to be a vodka martini. A few years ago I naively ordered a martini in a bar (something I seldom do, as they are outrageously expensive), and the bartender asked me what flavor of vodka I wanted; I had to *tell* him to use gin! When I am making my own, I mostly favor, these days, the 19th-century style celebrated by Ogden Nash & H. L. Mencken, but occasionally, in sentimental remembrance of my undergraduate years, I move up to the 20th century (gin & a generous dollop of dry vermouth -- I make no pretense of sophistication). As for vodka, I have almost no use for it, but sometimes, when in the mood, I have a very small glass of very cold vodka with a dried cherry in it -- an invention of my mother's. |

Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 23 May 09 - 09:46 AM my personal preference: Pour large gin into glass. Empty glass into kitchen sink. Wash glass. Refill glass with vintage port, and enjoy with water biscuits and a good cheese. |
Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: GUEST,CLETUS HARDDINGER Date: 23 May 09 - 02:19 PM I perty much like rabbits myself. They make fur sum fine eetin. But I cant seez how cookin them in gin would help at all. That stuff iz awful bad tastin. CLETUS |
Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: Richard Bridge Date: 23 May 09 - 03:17 PM SPB - collect gin, put back in bottle, and send to me... Cletus - I think cooking the rabbits in gin might taste divine - or maybe one cold make a rillette (coarse pate) like a pork pate. With Gin. But since cooking would boil off the alcohol (as a friend of mine used to tell his muslim boyfriend) while it would facilitate muslim consumption of the pate, I would think it a waste of the alcohol. I wonder if gradually freezing to about -30C might produce a little slug of alcohol for me leaving the flavourings in the ice to melt to cook the rabbit. |

Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: mkebenn Date: 25 May 09 - 08:01 AM Q, I grew up on Travis, but it's been awhile. Didn't he favor Plymouth in the earlier books, and then switch to Boodles? Maybe my mind is going, everything else is. I drank Beefeaters for years, but I prefer Bombay Saphire now. Mostly I drink a Canadian blended whiskey, an inexpensive one, 'cause it's good and it's cheap. Mike |
Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: TRUBRIT Date: 27 May 09 - 11:41 PM I love Boodles. One has to be careful being here and being a Brit transplant -- some brands they sell here are NOT (gasp, horror) the same as the ones they sell in UK...since Boodles is really hard to find round here I have moved to Tanqueray which is I believe, British Gordon's. Bombay Sapphire is good and someone - I can't remember who - makes a brand called 10 which is good. However with the ups and downs in the economy we can only afford rot gut gin half the time so if you are offered gin from a green bottle at my house, then house sales are up..... |
Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: Joe Offer Date: 28 May 09 - 12:59 AM My parents were not a good influence on me. They introduced me to the Glorious Gin Gibson - two shots of gin, a capful of dry vermouth, and three pickled onions, on the rocks. I have it only when visiting my parents. Making a habit of them, could be dangerous. -Joe- |

Spaw, I like gin but I also like good bourbon, and good scotch, and good Irish whiskey. A great big gin and tonic is a perfect accompaniment while relaxing in my comfy chair under the oak tree on a summer day..... watching the rabbits. Subject: RE: BS: Gin From: olddude Date: 28 May 09 - 01:16 PM My office was built in 1860 it was on the underground railroad and I recently discovered a bootlegger had it once also. I found a cache of about 200 empty (sadly empty) gin bottles in a secret storage place in the root cellar basement area. Had the old caps with the wire around them. Makes sense, right across the lake is canada so they must have been doing some rum running ... it was fun to find though |
