Subject: BS: Utah's tree died From: kendall Date: 30 May 09 - 04:02 PM Last fall I transplanted an Oak tree in memory of our beloved Utah Phillips. I've waited patiently all spring to see it bud and leaf out, but it hasn't happened. Apparently, it didn't survive the move. My cup runneth over....with crap. Damn. |

Subject: RE: BS: Utah's tree died From: Peace Date: 30 May 09 - 04:29 PM In Grade 4 I won an essay contest for our elementary school. The title was "The Most Unpoplar Poplar." I was presented with a tree which was planted at my Aunt's place in the country. The tree didn't survive it's first winter. However, I have remembered 'winning' that tree since I was 9 years old. Y'ain't forgot Utah, Kendall. Go plant another tree. Bruce |

Subject: RE: BS: Utah's tree died From: Janie Date: 30 May 09 - 04:38 PM Hurray, maeve! All will be well. Utah planted the seeds of his music and activism all over the place. Some of them have grown substantially and have sown even more seeds. |

Subject: RE: BS: Utah's tree died From: gnu Date: 30 May 09 - 04:50 PM Well, my old man transplanted a tree from the hedge years ago into the middle of the back yard. Obviously a fruit tree. Next spring and summer and fall, it was a black sprig. Looked rotten. He refused to take it out. The following spring, it refused to give up. Today, that rotten sprig is 25 feet tall and just as wide and covered in snow white apple blossums. And it houses the Hummingbirds that Mum adores. I dunno much about trees, but I know a bit about love and hope. If it really didn't survive, that's okay, but I would plant Maeve's tree next to it. I wouldn't take it down, that's up to someone else. |

Subject: RE: BS: Utah's tree died From: maeve Date: 30 May 09 - 05:29 PM Friend gnu is a wise fellow, and I've seen pictures of the apple tree his dad planted. It's beautiful. Yours may be growing roots this spring and may still leaf out. Plant the replacement tree wherever you like, Kendall. It's yours. m |

Subject: RE: BS: Utah's tree died From: VirginiaTam Date: 30 May 09 - 05:39 PM I have seen mountain laurel bushes never bloom for 3 years running, to suddenly bloom only one year and then not do it again. They were planted by my ex's grandmother. They did not bloom until the spring following her passing. They never did again after that as far as I know. |

Subject: RE: BS: Utah's tree died From: Genie Date: 30 May 09 - 06:37 PM No reason a tree planted in someone's memory/honor needs to be planted at any particular time. Plant another Utah tree, Kendall. I'm sure Utah would approve. Genie |

Subject: RE: BS: Utah's tree died From: maeve Date: 30 May 09 - 08:02 PM Sins, trees just need the right kind of care and attention, that's all. Kind of like people. We're glad you are happy with your pretty trees. May they bear healthy fruit for many years! m |

Subject: RE: BS: Utah's tree died From: pdq Date: 30 May 09 - 08:56 PM Too bad you can't plant a California Blue Oak for him. It is one of the most common species in his beloved Sierra Nevada foothills. |

Subject: RE: BS: Utah's tree died From: Rapparee Date: 30 May 09 - 09:57 PM So? Get someone there to plant one. Hell, plant 'em all over the country. Years back I found a tiny, tiny elm seedling when I was cutting the grass. I dug it up and replanted it. Not having any water handy I spit in the hole. Last time I saw it it was about 30 feet tall. Ain't nothin' like a tree to memorialize. I hate those new cemeteries with flat, ground-levels grave markers and no trees. |

Subject: RE: BS: Utah's tree died From: olddude Date: 31 May 09 - 12:00 AM We should consider getting together and setting up a high school scholarship for Utah. They are not expensive, 100 dollar or so a year. But at graduation a student is picked out by the music dept that best fits the legacy of utah. At graduation his bio is read to the whole crowd and an explanation of what the scholarship is about. It keeps Utah's memory not only alive with us but with each new generation of high school graduates. I did this for my grandfather. Each year everyone hears his story and knows what the scholarship is about. It is a great way of keeping his memory alive and out there with everyone that graduates at the High school. I am in if anyone wants to do this. Also the kid that gets the award will always remember that he got a scholarship because of this great man. In my high school here in town there are lots of these and although the award is not large .. the thought and the gratitude from the people who get is is remarkable. Dan |

Subject: RE: BS: Utah's tree died From: open mike Date: 31 May 09 - 12:11 AM Utah tells a great story about the speech he gave at his son's graduation. He said every year you hear speeches about how the students are like natural resources. Then he warns them about what happens when resources are used and abused. |

Subject: RE: BS: Utah's tree died From: MAG Date: 31 May 09 - 01:16 PM When I heard Utah tell that story (actually more than once) he talked about telling the kids to run if anyone ever called them a precious natural resource; look what happens to precious natural resources. He tells - told - it as if it happened in Spokane WA, 3 hours from here, where he lived at the time. I can just see it. |
