Subject: BS: Programming the remote control From: gnu Date: 02 Jun 09 - 05:44 AM Here is my version : Turn on VCR. Cover remote. Press VCR and Select simultaneously until red light blinks twice. Press 991. Uncover remote. Press VCR. Press power. Repeat until VCR turns off. Press Select. Here is the Rogers cable version : By default, your remote control will be able to control your Digital Terminal. However, you will need to program in specific codes in order to control your TV or VCR with the remote control. You should have received a small, fold-out guide with your remote control. This guide has all the codes and instructions you will need to set your remote control. TIP: You can enter a code that will automatically discover the correct code for your TV or VCR. To use this method, follow the steps specific to the type of remote control you received with your Digital Terminal. (If you arent sure which remote control you are using, please see page 6 of your user's guide. Click here to download a user guide. To set-up your Four-Mode remote control using the Scanning Code 1. Turn on component you want the remote to control. (Such as your VCR, TV etc.) 2. Cover the shiny black plastic portion of front of the remote control with your hand 3. While covering the front of the remote, press and hold down the appropriate mode button (for example, to program the remote to control your VCR, hold down VCR button) and press and hold down the Select button at the same time until the light on the remote blinks twice, then release. 4. While covering the front of the remote press 991> on the keypad. 6. Uncover the front of the remote and point it towards the component you wish to program. Press the appropriate mode button (for example to program the TV press the TV mode button) then the Power button. Repeat this process of pressing the appropriate mode button then the power button until the component you wish to program turns off. Once the component has turned off, press the Select button. The remote control LED will blink twice, confirming that you have successfully programmed your remote control. To set-up your Three-Mode remote control using the Scanning Code 1. Turn on component you want the remote to control. (Your TV or VCR) 2. Cover the shiny black plastic portion of front of the remote control with your hand 3. While covering the front of the remote, press and hold down the appropriate mode button (for example, to program the remote to control your VCR, hold down VCR button) and press and hold down the Select button at the same time until the red light on the remote blinks twice, then release. 4. While covering the front of the remote press 991 on the keypad. 5. Uncover the front of the remote and point it towards the component you wish to program. Press the appropriate mode button. Repeat this process of pressing the appropriate mode button then the power button until the component you wish to program turns off. Once the component has turned off, press the Select button. You have now successfully programmed your remote to control another home entertainment component. |

Subject: RE: BS: Programming the remote control From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 02 Jun 09 - 06:43 AM egads - when I bought my 3-in-one CD player several years ago I dispensed with the remote control cos it's at arms length from my computer desk & a bit further from my worktable. Besides, I'd never had any piece of electronic equipment that came with a remote control & couldn't see any reason to use one. Far Side has a great cartoon about the bloke who uses a broomstick to change TV channel so he doesn't need to stand up. sandra, who doesn't have a TV or VCR or any other similar marvel of modern electronic entertainment. |

Subject: RE: BS: Programming the remote control From: PoppaGator Date: 02 Jun 09 - 03:23 PM My pet peeve (well, one of them): Electronic gadgets for which certain critical functions can ONLY be activated/controlled by the remote because no applicable button or switch, etc., exists on the device itself. Remotes can be lost, or at least temporarily misplaced, and their batteries can run out of juice. The control panel on the device should provide all the controls needed to operate the damn thing! I have a (Phillips) combination CD-player/radio with no tuning knob. To change radio stations, even to switch from AM to FM, you must use the remote control. And even then, it's not easy or obvious; it is necessary to first pre-program your preferred radio stations, and then tune them in by holding down one button while pressing another, where neither of the buttons involved are marked as "radio tuner" or anything like that. Having lost the original operators manual, I need to go to the internet for instructions whenever I want to listen to the radio on this thing (which is usually in CD-playing mode). I suppose if I used it as a radio more often, I'd learn and remember the routine. But this is wrong! A person should be able to operate the thing by physically touching it ~ use of a remore control should not be required for any normal everyday function. |

Subject: RE: BS: Programming the remote control From: wysiwyg Date: 02 Jun 09 - 04:13 PM It's much simpler this way: Insert batteries Toss in loo tank Wipe off, and bing, it will work as well as it ever should have. ~S~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Programming the remote control From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Jun 09 - 04:53 PM We have the usual collection of remotes in the living room, and most of them are perched on top of what they work. But there are three for the television--because to record anything from the converter box it has to run through the VCR/DVD to the TV. If you leave the VCR on you can take care of most television transactions with the converter box remote, and I tend to skip the features on the TV that require that dedicated remote. It's like the spatula thread--how many remotes do you own? Living room--VCR/DVD, TV, Converter Box, CD player; front room, DVD player, VCR player, TV, Converter Box; office, TV, Converter Box, Radio (with CD changer). We make a point of always setting down the remote in the room it belongs before leaving or we have a mess trying to get them all to the correct devices. The converter boxes are all the same, the remotes look alike, but they're each programed to different types of televisions. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Programming the remote control From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 02 Jun 09 - 05:32 PM I agree with PG about the functions that can only be accessed by remote control. My DVD player only has "Play", "Eject", and "Pause" buttons on its control panel. All other functions are by remote control only. And why do they include remote controls with cheapo room air conditioners? Does anyone actually use them? I've thrown several away. It would take longer to find the remote than to walk the few steps to the A/C and turn it on. |

Subject: RE: BS: Programming the remote control From: GUEST,PeterC Date: 02 Jun 09 - 05:42 PM Remotes are so overloaded with buttons now that I have difficulty reading the labels. My 87 year old mother has no chance. |

Subject: RE: BS: Programming the remote control From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 02 Jun 09 - 05:45 PM As Mrs Beeton would have put it "First catch your remote control..." Elusive little beasts - and they always seem to be painted black so they can hide better. The trouble is that increasingly the actual machine your supposed to be controlling - the TV etc - doesn't have the manual controls to make it do the things you want to do. Lose your control and you are stymied. And the so-called universal controls they sell you only have a very limited range of tricks, so you have to go on the net to track down the actual model you need, and pay through the nose for it. The good thing is that for people who aren't able to "to walk the few steps to the A/C (or whatever and turn it on", which probably means most of us sooner or later, remote controls can be a lifestyle-saver. And sometimes a lifesaver. What I want is to have remotes with built in mobile phones, so that you can dial them and make them give away their hiding place by ringing. |

Subject: RE: BS: Programming the remote control From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 03 Jun 09 - 04:22 AM I hope my CD player outlives me & I don't have to get a new one that only works with a remote! |
