Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: GUEST,Sonsie Face Date: 16 Jun 09 - 12:49 PM Leave the haggis behind what? Gare D'Austerlitz BTW N'oubliez pas le tunel sous La Manche, mes amis. One can get out of Knid by playing under the Code Napoleon avec Madame Trellis |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: David C. Carter Date: 16 Jun 09 - 12:58 PM Code Napoleon! I'll go straight to Waterloo. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: mandotim Date: 16 Jun 09 - 01:07 PM Just a query; 14th edition rules; was that pre or post Docklands Light Railway, I forget. Anyway...Tufnell Park, but without the Platform 2 reverse. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 16 Jun 09 - 03:02 PM Then it gives me great pleasure.... As well as that for the first time since 1947 Wood Lane |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: Will Fly Date: 16 Jun 09 - 03:36 PM Wood Lane, eh? That's a very slick play indeed! Only one possible answer to that - in desperation: Lime Grove. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: TheSilentOne Date: 16 Jun 09 - 04:06 PM Well that forces Bethnal Green next. We've come full circle! (BTW Mitch the Bass I was at UCH 1969-72) |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: VirginiaTam Date: 16 Jun 09 - 04:13 PM I challenge TheSilentOne. Can't be Bethnal Green on the evidence that you can't even get your college right. I know you went to UCL not UCH. Euston Square is a more appropriate move. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: SPB-Cooperator Date: 16 Jun 09 - 04:23 PM Oh yes.... going the same way as the 1930 international final which brought the game to its inevitable conclusion. It will be interesting if enough people remember the next 4 moves commonly known as the VE Day recovery. If not, can I claim the result in advance? |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: paula t Date: 16 Jun 09 - 04:33 PM well I'm going to have to call your bluff and invoke the Tudor Court rules and say Silver Street. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: guitaaress Date: 16 Jun 09 - 05:07 PM phhhhhhht can't bluff me! Aldgate on the district. (Pray Goddess I can rebound off the buffers at Uxbridge) |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: Tug the Cox Date: 16 Jun 09 - 08:18 PM Thanks for letting me in Mo.......... argh, The excitement was too much for my poor late father. Guest Tuglet. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: mandotim Date: 17 Jun 09 - 03:27 AM A purely defensive move I think; Euston! That should keep things quiet for a bit. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: Will Fly Date: 17 Jun 09 - 03:28 AM Aldgate was expressly cited (in the 14th edition rule book) as a play that could only be made as a counter to Mothers' Square - and only as an emergency play, at that. The previous play was Silver Street, so it looks as though Aldgate is invalid. Sorry about that. I therefore play Mornington Terrace. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: Stu Date: 17 Jun 09 - 03:39 AM Nice one Will, but I'm challenging that (although it's one of the finest plays of Thurlow's Feint I've ever had the privilege to see). East Putney. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: Will Fly Date: 17 Jun 09 - 03:56 AM Bugger! I was quoting the 14th edition rules from memory - just checked them and it looks as though Aldgate IS allowed after all. I shall have to withdraw Mornington Terrace (so close!) and yield gracefully, for the moment, to East Putney. Just shows you how experience can triumph over age... |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: Bryn Pugh Date: 17 Jun 09 - 04:12 AM Earl's Court. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: mandotim Date: 17 Jun 09 - 04:16 AM If we are allowing Aldgate under 14th Edition, that leaves an opening for the classic East Acton reverse, but perhaps a more interesting and perhaps even definitive approach might be...Kilburn Park? |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: guitaaress Date: 17 Jun 09 - 05:43 AM (wicked laugh) we have them on the run Humph! |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: A Wandering Minstrel Date: 17 Jun 09 - 08:12 AM Ah, but you have overlooked the western lateral shunt... Knightsbridge! (can anyone exchange 5 black tokens for a podume of infinite darkness before we invoke the Dollis Hill loop?) |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: TheSilentOne Date: 17 Jun 09 - 02:46 PM Green Park (as it's the third Wednesday in June I think I can safely play that?) |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: paula t Date: 17 Jun 09 - 03:45 PM Only until 2.30 pm I'm afraid -(see Appendix a subsection 3c1 Brown's revised schedule for play in the Spring months). I'm therefore going to have to play Leicester Square. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: VirginiaTam Date: 17 Jun 09 - 03:58 PM I believe under Trumpington's Variations, I will play Totteridge & Whetstone. But only if one sleeps through all references to Haringey. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: TheSilentOne Date: 17 Jun 09 - 04:24 PM == this is not a move == but a link: to a wonderful isihac site! |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: Will Fly Date: 17 Jun 09 - 04:59 PM Ecod, VT, Totteridge & Whetstone, eh? Blockbuster play there indeed! Nevertheless: Cricklewood Broadway. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: paula t Date: 17 Jun 09 - 05:04 PM The Silent One, Thanks for that. I had been searching for a clearer explanation of Mortimer's 2nd Variation. I now declare Parson's Green - Which should restrict many players to the Great Western Line. Sorry, but this competition is hotting up! |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: VirginiaTam Date: 17 Jun 09 - 05:15 PM Great Western? That's a smooth move Paula, but the double back through Didcot Parkway may be a hazard. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: paula t Date: 17 Jun 09 - 05:22 PM Oh, I forgot about that one. Got too confident then. Sooo....... I'll have a shot in the dark and play the Bethlehem variation. King's Cross?(Double score!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: guitaaress Date: 17 Jun 09 - 08:25 PM I have some shocking news from Samantha who has returned from polishing Organs; apparently The darned French are trying to call a halt to all Games of "Mornigton Crescent" asserting that "Mornington Croissant" (the French version as you all know) predates and under EU conventions we must now play using the Paris Metro! I believe this is an outrageous act of French chauvinism and must be resisted at all costs. King's Cross! Aye Caramba! There are few choices here. "Old Street" is allowed from here under Baisingthwaite's 1937 precedent I believe. Or is this viewed as "Castleing out of Check" Gee you guys are good! |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: VirginiaTam Date: 18 Jun 09 - 01:16 AM I found this on http://www.mornington-crescent-rule.fsnet.co.uk/mornington-crescent-rules.htm Mornington Crescent - Origins The idea that the game has been played since 1567 is, I believe, untrue. As far as I know the game was developed and codified for I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue (based on a simpler game devised by Barry Cryer and others) and only subsequently were similar or similar sounding pre-existing games (such as Tun Crescent) co-opted into a spurious lineage. The 'international incidents' ascribed to disputes arising from playing Mornington Crescent in the 19th century are nothing to do with Mornington Crescent. Many of these arose from the French game "Eclu" popular when duelling was all the rage. Some pundits have retrospectively renamed this game Mornington Crescent again to seek to substantiate the lineage. (Does anyone know the rules of Eclu? (Or how to show the accent on the E?)) What's the score so far and what will happen if I play a Hammersmith jink? |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: guitaaress Date: 18 Jun 09 - 01:41 AM Je suis pardon Ais avant eclu |
Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: Will Fly Date: 18 Jun 09 - 04:06 AM The score is still being calculated. Samantha had had to supervise the cleaning of the church where the organs were being polished. There were lots of candles used to light the scene, and Samantha has been asked to make sure that the young male cleaner gets all the grease and wax off. Meanwhile, I play Fulham Broadway, which I think is pretty good for 9am on a Thursday. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mornington Crescent June 2009 From: mandotim Date: 18 Jun 09 - 10:36 AM Leaving aside the complexities of the Blewitt Variation (1961) it should be possible to restore the importance of the Northern Line at this point; Morden! |
