Barry - Ken the pleasure was all mine, it was hard not to join in! Jo and i miss you boys it was far too short a trip, well at least our end was, there is so much more to see and hear. The Challenge, laid down by Banjiman, is to keep this thread going until next years festival, game on!

It was all my fault, I was the one that kept him hopping from bar to bar. No sooner did he get a drink & sit when I'd remember to look at the schedule & find that we were due next door or up the street or across the damn hill. We (Ken & I) entered a song contest. We finished up one gig to waddle (I was waddling not them) up some God foresaken gothic stairway or hill to the Sea Scouts club house or something then sing the song (thankfully Richard squeezed us in) only to have Pete guide us to the next spot with oonly a breather in between. Bewteen all the man's unning I doubt if he drank more than a couple drops per glass anyway.
Speaking of the "Punch & Judy" act, Peter will have to tell you about his puppet, it the same one was passed down to him from, well he'll tell you cus I might be streching it a bit but the puppet was classic & Pete makes a lovely sounding Punch.
And again another thanks to Pete would stood in as our "third" on a few songs, espically "Come Down You Bunch of Roses" where it's done in 3 part harmony so there were a few that we couldn't have dmne with out you.
I'm just home & am still glowing at what a wonderful time & we had in being a part of it & meeting up with others that had a hand in making it oh so much fun

My Mothers family came from the music hall,silent picture (piano) and came to Scarboro as a Pierot on the beach shows, Uncle harry married Edie (Edith) Bayes, the Bayes were, and still are, rooted into the fishing community. my sister married into the Owenson family who, from 1896, were the Punch and Judy men in scarborough, the tradition was passed on to me twenty years ago althougfh I have never actually done it scarborough. My Fathers family were laterly farm labourers although we are decended from ughtred, one was knighted on the field of Agincourt and another was a Pirate and an associate of Drake. OOOps too much information. I did work in the bar of Golden Ball when I was a puppy and knew most (certainly all the dinking fisher families)of the fishing families. AAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhh so much change

It wasn't done on purpose, I was with Barry & Ken and they were in one venue and had to dash next door to the other and i had thre quarters of a pint, they hadn't realised they were on and thankfully it was only next door. I didn't keep going back and forth!

both places were busy ,they are also right next door to each other.
both places were on the festival programme.
both places were busier because of the festival,my approach would be [if I had been drinking alcohol],to have an overpriced soda water[it was twice the price of the Lancaster]in the sub aqua club,then have a pint afterwards in the Leeds arms.
I think the sub aqua club would have been much quieter, trade wise without the festival,so while I can see their point of view over that, there is another way of looking at it :that sort of attitude by publicans,is of the variety of cutting off the nose to spite the face,[imo] if everyone did it it would be a problem,if only one person does it its hardly a problem.
of course another alternative would be for the sub aqua club to get a barrel of decent ale for the festival.
the main problem is the bringing the beer in to the pub,I am sure no one can object to anyone going in to the leeds,and having a pint,and then going next door to perform.but if the sub aqua club wants more trade,they are not going to get it by not allowing the festival,on the premises ,but they will get it by putting on a decent pint.
it is called being competitive.

I thought the new venue the sub aqua club,was an improvement on the leeds hotel,many of the members were genuinely interested.

I know it's a bit late but I just wanted to add my thanks to all involved with the fun and festivity at Scarborough, especially the hard-working volunteer at the barrier by the lights. I don't know how many times I had to ask for directions to the venues (and I used to live in Scarborough!!).
I only managed the Saturday but what a day.
For me the highlight was my first sight/hearing of the ersatz Finn and Haddie (even the substitute was great). What a way to start my day listening to these two guys. Fine songs, good patter and very patient and informative (even coping with Dick's questions in the Sea Cadet hut. They must have been good because this "tightest-tyke" actually bought a CD (thanks Ken and Jan).
I also enjoyed Monkey's Fist, Dick Miles, Debra Cowan etc etc etc plus chatting to old friends. This has been my only Maritime do this year I must be slipping.

Home again, jiggety-jig! Wow, thank you everybody for the very kind words!

I wish I could have continued on with Barry to Bull Bay and Beyond, but alas, I had to come back to work. Scarborough was really a treat - the people couldn't have been nicer, and it was fantastic to meet and reconnect with a host of excellent singers and friends.

Particular thanks to Peter and his wonderful family, and Carole and Andrew for taking such great care of us. Two highlights for me: the York City Walls and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct - whew! Super singers and performers are Carole and Andrew, too.

Thank you also very much especially to Two Black Sheep and a Stallion, everyone at the Black Swan Folk Club, Paul and Wendy (new CD!) and all of Blind Summat!, to Richard and Jeanette Grainger, Helen Pitt and Steve Dawes, Les Pirates (woo!), Hughie Jones, Dick Miles (nice work with the hens, especially), and to Ken and Jan Lardner at The Chantey Cabin. Thank you all a lot for your support - it was a real treat to meet and sing with all of you, and yes, let's do more!

Thanks more to all who joined in singing on the pier after the fireworks on Saturday and to all who took over the Leeds Arms on Sunday night. That's the stuff, right there.

It's just lovely to read all the wonderful comments about Seafest. I had a fantastic time and for me, it had been a solid four years since I had done a maritime event in the UK. It was at the Lancaster Maritime Festival that I got to know Keith, Sylvia, Steve, Helen, Dick, Hughie and others. Many of these fine musicians have become dear, dear friends and I always enjoy their company and their music when I am over.

It was also great to meet and have a chat with Ross. I didn't get to meet Micca, but I was so happy to see my birthday sister, jacqui.c come into the Anchorage Club on Sunday afternoon. Mudcat was well represented!

Barry lives about an hour north of me in the States and I find it funny that I came 3000 miles to see him. He and Ken were a huge success and it looks like they'll be putting on their traveling shoes again over here.

It was also great to finally meet Paul and Wendy and to hear Wendy and the the band, Blind Summat. Great stuff!!

Many thanks to Richard and Jeanette Grainger (and all the hardworking volunteers) for all the work that goes into a festival such as Seafest.

A highlight for me was getting to hear Hughie Jones again. I also enjoyed the impromptu singaround with Bob Fortune, John Lawson and a couple of other Endeavour Shanteymen on Sunday afternoon in the Sub-Aqua Club.

I am finding that music sure does help to build bridges. And with the Seafest, I am finding that I've got a few more in my pocket :-)

I love my job. Now to get over this #$^%#@ cold and get ready for Broadstairs.

We (Ken & I) had a wonderfully fantastic time.
Thanks Richard & Jeanette for inviting us & for making us so comfortable & the warm welcomes when it was only our first meeting.
The festival was great, so friendly & inviting & we were made to feel as if we were regulars & not first time nervous virgins.
SPECIAL THANKS TO Peter of 2 Black Sheep & a Stallion for bringing us in under with his wing & a prayer, (it was a close call at customs, they have no sense of humor) & his hosting us & his just all around general support, we wouldn't been there without you. And thanks to Paul & Wendy Arrowsmith for just being the friendly & talented people that you are, we love you, it was our delight to be at the Black Swan as your audience & to be chumming with you guys for the weekend.
It was a treat to meet up & hear Dick Miles too. I just knew I love meeting him. Killing the hen party for Dick was a bloody pleasure but he had them by their tail feathers anyway & they loved it, good thing they couldn't stay longer.
A big surprise was seeing a Schooner Adventure on Steve from Gloucester, USA as Finn & Haddie showed up for a Yankee Song's workshop, he & his wife were supposed to be in Ireland, thanks for dropping in. Meeting & hearing Helen Pitt & Steve Dawes was a great treat & delight, we hit it off right, right from the start, wonderful & talented folks. Another treat was meeting up with Ross Campbell after all that's been posted on the Merchant sailor's songs thread by him, sorry I was out of voice by the time you got CW-9. Seeing Deb C was like old home days, I had just seen her less than a week earlier, she's always a treat.
Micc, where'd ya go? I got to see you at the song compitation which we couldn't stay for (submitted a song right fro m finishing a spot, only to rush out the door to another spot. We got to wink at each other & that was that, wish we had a bit more time together, next time! Oh, lost in that song compitation but it at least got enough praise from one judge to get the very strong singing Armstrongs Patent that she was traaveling with to ask for a recording of it.
I know I'm missing out on some folks here but everyone was so wonderfull that I can no longer keep track. What a wonderfull & delightfull time, thanks to all

hello all,have just returned home,wed 29 july 00 14.

I had a lovely gig at Coatham Mundeville.
Ross,the play went well,Old Scarth excelled himself despite his gout,and despite having his straw hat snatched off his head,by the b#### director,who claimed it wasnt period,surely victorian shipping agents had straw hats?.
Seriously,the music was good,and the children did well,particularly the dancing,perhaps the director should have worked harder on their voice projection,but it was a good effort.
it was a pleasure to meet all the other mudcatters,thanks to Barry Finn for his help with the hen party.
the spot I enjoyed playing most was on the main stage,and my spots in the leeds arms,which also went well.
sorry,I did not enjoy the Lancaster[awful acoustics,among other things]
I really enjoyed Finn and Haddies spot in the Sea Cadets Hall[what wonderful acoustics],and everyone else I got time to see.

Thoroughly enjoyed Seafest. The weather held (mostly) fair. A rare treat! And as always, we met up with many friends and heard some wonderful songs. Too many of both to mention individually!

Steve & I had some really good gigs in various pubs . . . and I'd like to say a very big thank you to Debra Cowan for so generously inviting me to share one of her spots, and for the excellent songs she brought to our workshop on 'songs of women and the sea.' I hope we might get the chance to repeat the experience sometime. She is one of my favourite performers, and a pleasure to sing with.

It was great to meet Barry & Ken as well. I do hope you get back over next year. I'll be looking out for you.

Seafest seems to gain strength with every year. Well done to Richard & Jeanette.

I got back to Newark last night at about 10.30, totally exhausted, but very happy. So much good music and friends to hang out with. Many thanks to Stallion for arranging for me to have a bed for the night making sure I didn't get into any mischief!

Barry and Ken were brilliant and I'll second the compliments about Deb Cowan. I saw two of Carole and Andrew's sets - superb as usual.

I was there to witness Dick Miles and the hen party - he handled it so well but it was a relief when they left - one of them got a bit irritated when I put my finger to my lips as she wanted to talk to me through Dick's singing.

The real highlight, for me, was joining a group for dinner on Saturday night that included Hughie Jones, late of the Spinners and now a wonderful performer in his own right. The Spinners were responsible for my discovery of folk music so that was quite an event.

I am so glad I got a weekend pass for this one.

Superb weekend all round. Great to catch up with so many old friends (too many to mention) and meet some new one's. Especially good to catch up with our transatlantic friends; Deb C, Ken and Barry. (Thanks Ken & Barry for making the effort to get to out Black Swan gig on Thursday as well).

Highlights? Playing the main stage with Blind Summat! to a really good reception, Wendy managing to get pretty much all of the patrons of the very tough Lancaster singing and listening (Deb C's Hen Party had left by then!), Ken & Barry's sets (they are really quite superb at what they do) and the impromptu mass sing on the West Pier after the offical events had finished (with Keith Kendrick & Sylvia Needham, Steve Dawes & Helen Pitt, Ken & Barry, Wendy Arrowsmith etc and a few drunken Scarborough residents!), I just shut up and listened, the harmonies were devastating.

Can't wait for next year.

Yes, Saturday was great, and Barry & Ken especially so...
And I so agree, Debra's one of those best-kept secrets, a real unsung talent.
Didn't manage to see quite all the acts performing, but managed to renew acquaintance with abovementioned and fellow-catters Micca, shantyfreak, Stallion, cranedriver, sussexcarole, derbyram, sylviaN, p.t., banjiman and all too briefly captain birdseye. Along with non-catters (?) steve & helen and monkeys fist. Just couldn't catch everyone I wanted to!   

Ross - I think our paths must have crossed too! And like you I noticed problems with noisy punters at the Lancaster (esp during parts of the singaround - although ) and the Merchant (mid afternoon).

Micca - will PM.

I too was sad to have missed that new production on the Sunday. Where's it next being performed, does anyone know?

Sorry I missed you, Micca.

Managed to reach Scarborough in time for most of Finn & Haddie's first set Saturday morning. Swapped CDs with Barry who promised to sing me the CW9 Convoy song posted on the Merchant Navy Songs thread a few weeks back. Down to the West Pier then to say hallo to Ken & Jan at the Chantey Cabin and check out the open-air concert platform (always seemed to have a good crowd throughout the day) and the beer-tent (tasty selection of real ales).

Caught Barry and Ken a couple more times at different venues round the town. At the Merchant they were followed by Dick Miles, who himself seemed to have been followed in by a strolling hen party in full flight. As soon as he'd finished "Sailortown" (one of my favourite arrangements of Cicely Fox-Smith's poems) he was assailed by requests - "Can you sing Molly Malone? It was my mother's favourite song." and "Do you know any Irish songs?" Of course he could - and he did - and had them in the palm of his hand for the rest of the set - masterly! Monkey's Fist I haven't seen before - a good strong set from this four-man group, mostly unaccompanied shanties, occasional guitar and duet concertina.

Debra Cowan had less luck in the Lancaster later on, where a loud crowd of visitors made singing or listening impossible. Even the landlady apologised, but was powerless to quiet them. Odd spells of relative peace allowed a few songs to suggest that this woman is worth a serious listen - confirmed later at the Sub-Aqua Club where she was joined by Helen Pitt, when they alternated and occasionally harmonised on ballads and songs.

There they followed Hughie Jones, in great form, and great to see him again after last year's health problems. Surrounded by ships' bells, brass plates and binnacles, the trophies of the Sub-Aqua Clubs expeditions to wreck sites round the British Isles and beyond (some great photographs too), he was in his element, relaxed and humourous.

At the end of the evening, a firework display brought everybody back to the beach by the pier for the grand finale, and after that (don't go, there's more!) the open-air concert continued. Managed to find Barry and Ken before we left, and as promised, he sang the CW9 song into my digital camera (just discovered, third year I've had it, that it has a video facility). Now on my to-do list, along with "Sailortown".


Extremely tired on the way back, but really had a great day. Sorry I couldn't stay for Sunday, when Richard Grainger's musical play The Moorland Whalers, with music by Chris Parkinson, was to be premiered. Any reports?

I am home from Scarborough Seafest!! having met up with an assortment of Mudcatters, including Barry Finn and Ken Schatz who seemed to be having a whale of a time and were in Great voice, Carol and Andrew, Moorley man and a couple of strays wearing "Schooner Adventure, Gloucester MA" T shirts!!! we had a good sing and a bright sunny day ( In Yorkshire!!!), Thanks to the organisers I wish Cobble and I could have stayed longer!

Barry, Deb, regrettably the contract I am working on didn't get finished as I had hoped, so unfortunately I was unable to make it down there. I have to work on it today as well, the deadline is tomorrow, so it looks like it will have to be a meet up in Boston again, hopefully this fall.

Hope you both had a smashing time in Scarborough !
