Today Jack Elliott is 78, I call on all here to wish him a glorious 79th year. His latest CD is magnificent, and I saw him at the Kate Wolf Fest last month and he sounds as good as ever.

Many years ago I saw Ramblin' Jack at the Mariposa Folk Festival. There was a workshop of some sort coming up that he was supposed to perform in, and he was standing beside the stage walking his dog. I went over to him and asked him if he could perform 9-12 Greens, a 15 minute long monologue (with guitar accompaniment) ending in a 1 verse song. He said it was pretty long, and he wasn't sure it would be appropriate, but he would think about it. Near the end of the workshop, the host started rushing Jack to get finished, making some sarcastic comment about how his introductions were as long as his songs. Well, that was all Jack needed to decide to fulfill my request. He launched into 9-12 Greens, and it was magnificent, longer and funnier than I had ever heard it before, despite every attempt, through pithy side comments, by the workshop host to get him to wrap it up and sing the damn song. It was a battle of wits that Jack won hands down!
Happy birthday Jack! And may you celebrate many, many more!

I saw Jack perform, for the first time in years, at the Cactus Café in Texas a few weeks ago. The show was as entertaining as ever and we chatted for a few minutes at the "grip and grin" after the show. It was great seeing Jack in a small venue with a lot of audience interaction. I've also been enjoying the new blues CD, A Stranger Here. Happy Birthday, Jack.

I spoke briefly with Jack after his gig in Glasgow, Scotland, about 1999, while buying a signed copy of his CD 'South Coast'.

I said to him 'I think you sound a bit like Bob Dylan'. He replied (drawled!) 'well ya know I roomed with him one time and I guess some of it maybe kinda rubbed off'!

Happy birthday Mr Adnopoz!

Big Tim,
I think Jack was being modest about the rubbing off part. Zimmerman (stage name Dylan) absorbed much of Woody Guthrie's style from Jack. Dylan became interested in Woody's stuff after Woody was too sick to play anymore. Jack had played with Woody while he was in better health, was a close friend, and kept much of Woody's music alive.

One of my original inspirations as a solo performer - I still do his Diamond Joe version. Keep, on truckin Jack!

I think he would have been only 28 at the first Newport festival.

I knew he was going to appear at the Johnny Keenan banjo festival but am disappointed that it's Ramblin' Jack's only date in Ireland.

When Jack made the 'rooming' remark I thought he was just being tongue in cheek, as I was very familiar with Dylan's biog and was pretty certain that the two had never roomed together. However...

Dylan (then still the not so mighty Zim) first heard a batch of Jack's records in Dinkytown ('59 probably) and was very impressed by them.

When, in early '61 he met Jack in person at Greystone Hospital when both were visiting Woody, Dylan was star struck and started following Jack around 'like a puppy dog'. When Jack, who was just back from Europe, took a room at the Earle Hotel in Washington Square, Dylan also took a room there, a few doors down. So, effectively he did virtualy room with Jack for a short time.

btw, Dylan is not Dylan's 'stage name'. It is his legal name, changed by deed poll in '62. Both his former wives were Mrs. Dylan and his 5 children were all given that name.

Your right about that "Big Tim", Derrols Adams told me the story that Jack had this young kid following him around trying to steal his Guitar licks.
As Aye,
Phil.

Thanks for the confirmation Scouse!

It's surely ironic then that Derroll Adams was ushered into the mighthy Zim's august presence during the 'Don't Look Back' Dylan tour of England in'65, by which time he was rapidly becoming the 'coolest guy on the planet' with both the Beatles and the Stones paying homage (and rightly so, IMO!)
