They came from many different backgrounds and classes, so their accents would reflect that. I think our concept of how they spoke was framed by Wallace Beery. For those who don't remember, he was a lovable lug of an actor who had hits movies in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. Beery was an American, but he adopted a British accent when he played Long John Silver in Treasure Island. More specifically, he adopted a Somerset accent, and not well either. Captain Hook of the Disney Peter Pan movie had a very upper class London accent. Johnny Depp chose a working class London accent, based on Keith Richards, for his Capt Jack Sparrow. But somehow, Beery's singsong Somerset accent is what stuck as iconic pirate speak, me Hardies. |

Basically, since Bristol and that area of England was a source of many of the pirates we think of when we say "pirate", the slang and dialect from southwest England is the majority of what "pirate talk' would be. You too can have them, and install them and tell YOUR computer to use one of them for today. (It's nice to have options....I have most of my browsers set to use fonts I like better than the default.)
