Subject: Lyr Add: THE OLD MAN (Phil Coulter)^^ From: Tiger Date: 21 Jul 99 - 01:47 PM You guys are right, this is almost impossible for me to sing. I recently sent this as a condolence to someone who had just lost his Dad. It's hard to believe the gratitude. ......Tiger
The Old Man
The tears have all been shed now,
I never will forget him, For he made me "what I am." Though he may be gone, Memories linger on, And I miss him, the old man.
As a boy, he'd take me walking
I thought he'd live forever,

Subject: RE: LYR ADD: The Old Man From: Susanne (skw) Date: 21 Jul 99 - 05:40 PM Seems an inexhaustible subject! Both Ewan macColl and Steve Goodman have written songs titled 'My Old Man', in the same vein as Phil Coulter. I think Ewan's is in the DT, but Steve's isn't. I'll post it when I get round to it. - Susanne |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: The Old Man From: George Date: 22 Jul 99 - 08:12 AM But MacColl's "My old man" is anything but sad . . much more "coming up fighting". It's a pity it's a little twee in its new technology images; it's almost a great song (IMO). G. |
Subject: Lyr Add: MY OLD MAN (Steve Goodman)^^ (Mackintosh) From: Susanne (skw) Date: 12 Sep 99 - 04:38 PM There are three 'My Old Men' in the DT, but not this Steve Goodman song. I haven't heard the original, but this is the way Iain MacKintosh sings it (not very often, he admits):
I miss the old man tonight; I wish he was here with me.
He never talked about his war, in France when he was eighteen
I remember the fights we had, my sisters and I got him mad
I miss the old man tonight, I can almost see his face |
Subject: Lyr Add: MY OLD MAN (Steve Goodman)^^ From: raredance Date: 12 Sep 99 - 10:00 PM Looks like Iain MacKintosh may have adapted the song to fit a more personal situation to him. I understand, I did the same thing about 10+ years ago. I put my version on a cassette that I sent out to friends and relatives. It was hard enough to record and I never have sung it live in public. here are the Steve Goodman lyrics as printed on the album sleeve of his "Say It In Private" album. I think Steve once did it live on Austin City Limits.
MY OLD MAN
I miss my old man tonight
He was a pilot in the big war In the U.S. Army Air Corps
And oh the fights we had
I miss my old man tonight rich r ^^ |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: The Old Man From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Sep 99 - 02:06 PM Gee, I don't think I could sing any of these - I'd get too choked up. My old man taught me to love singing. He's almost 80, and his voice is still strong and clear. I don't get much chance to sing with him any more, but it's still a pleasure to stand next to him in church and sing with him. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: The Old Man From: Susanne (skw) Date: 13 Sep 99 - 06:25 PM Thanks, Rich! |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: The Old Man From: Big Mick Date: 13 Sep 99 - 08:54 PM Good man, Joe. A great sentiment. As I told you all in an earlier thread on this song, I sang it for the members of my band, three of whom have lost their fathers. All were given the gift of music by these fine men. Even though my Da is still alive, the imagery this song evokes and the knowledge that I will lost him someday makes it a very hard song to sing. For those that would like to read that thread, CLICK HERE Joe, if you would like, I will sing this for you at the Getaway. All the best, Big Mick |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: The Old Man From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Sep 99 - 11:07 PM Mick, please do sing that one for me. I think I'll really like it. a couple of others I really like are Leader of the Band by Dan Fogelberg, and The LivinG Years, which was performed by Mike and the Mechanics. Both are powerful songs. -Joe Offer, son of a darn good father- |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: The Old Man From: Big Mick Date: 13 Sep 99 - 11:18 PM It's a deal, my dear friend. I will do The Old Man for you. Mick |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: The Old Man From: Mark Cohen Date: 08 Nov 99 - 01:07 AM Thanks to Joe for putting in a link to this thread from one about John Denver's (Jerry Jeff Walker's) song. And thanks to Tiger for posting the Phil Coulter song. I didn't know it, but I'm going to learn it. There's a wonderful song by Tom Hodge from Bellingham, Wash., the last two lines of the chorus are It never much mattered what songs they might be Cause my daddy was singing with me I have it on tape somewhere; I don't know if Tom or anyone else ever recorded it, but it's worth hearing. My dad died eight years ago at 64. A few years before that, when he was living in Philadelphia and I was in Seattle, I wrote a song that I was surprised to find in the DT, called When My Father Called. When I read the words now I find them a little confusing; I guess because it's both about my father and also his father, who died in 1945 when my Dad was 19. I was able to sort out a lot of unfinished business with my Dad before he died, for which I'm grateful, but I never got to talk with him very much about his father, and I wish I had. I know he and my grandmother were born in or near Kiev, in the Ukraine. I do remember hearing one good story: There was a family wedding in Philadelphia in the 30's, when times were very hard. My grandfather gave the couple a gift of $5. He was a tailor, and was about the least well off of all the cousins -- but he was the only one to bring a gift. Thanks, everyone, for reminding me of all these wonderful songs. Aloha, Mark Cohen |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: The Old Man From: paddymac Date: 25 Sep 00 - 02:24 PM There don't seem to be many songs in this vein, but Phil Coulter's marvelous contribution gets me all teary eyed. |
Subject: RE: LYR ADD: The Old Man From: 2feathers Date: 30 Sep 00 - 10:24 PM After all those sentimental songs it seems iconoclastic for me to remember this one: My mother takes in washing And so does sister Ann Everybody works at our house But My Old Man. Sorry gang! Of course there's "Oh, my papa! To me he was so wonderful...Oh, my papa! so funny in his way..." one of Eddie Fisher's (Fischer?) hits. Wonder what's become of Eddie? |

Subject: RE: LYR ADD: The Old Man From: Charley Noble Date: 14 Jun 02 - 04:24 PM Good work, Nutty. I've always been fond of Si Kahn's "New Wood" or as it's more commonly known "Gone, Gonna Rise Again." My father's still around at 97; he hates the fuss and bother of birthdays and Father's Day but we send him cards anyhow! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Old Man (Phil Coulter) From: GUEST,DonMeixner Date: 23 Jun 06 - 01:51 AM Well my feelings about this song are well documented in other threads. We do this in my band. At least it has interesting chords. The best My Old Man song I have ever heard was by Jerry Jeff Walker. Affectionate with out getting over ripe or maudlin. Don |
