Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Fok Club From: Capo da Monty Date: 26 Oct 09 - 02:47 PM Don't know about all that info in your first post JJ but they are.... BRILLIANT!!!!!!! Saw then at Fylde Festival last month and have made 200 mile round trips to see them in the past but sadly am in Dorset at the moment so can't make this gig. It will be a great evening. Regards CdM |
Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Fok Club From: Johnny J Date: 27 Oct 09 - 07:33 AM Thank you for that. We reckon they'll be very good too although we haven't heard them play live up here before. Of course, we are already aware of the talents of some of the individual members. |
Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Fok Club From: Jack Campin Date: 27 Oct 09 - 08:24 AM They have a lot of videos on YouTube. People who like that sort of thing will probably like them. |
Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Fok Club From: Johnny J Date: 27 Oct 09 - 08:55 AM "People who like that sort of thing will probably like them." Well, I suppose that goes for everything , Jack. :-) Hopefully, there'll be enough people who appreciate "quality music" ...of its kind... who will come along. There seems to be a lack of interest in English acts up this neck of the woods though but we should still persevere. |

Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Fok Club From: GUEST Date: 01 Nov 09 - 06:39 PM I guess this is probably too late to matter but I was confused - 24th Oct was a Saturday! Wednesday was the 28th Oct. Whenever the gig was I hope it was attended .... even if you didn't think the locals would show any interest. Hazel. Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Fok Club From: Capo da Monty Date: 12 Nov 09 - 09:02 AM Anybody go to the gig?? |
Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Fok Club From: Johnny J Date: 12 Nov 09 - 09:15 AM Sorry about the mistake over the date. It was actually quite well attended especially considering the usual issues mentioned above and also because they had appeared nearby(Balerno) the night before too. So, we were content with the turn out although there was room for a few more. To be honest, they weren't entirely my thing but I've got to admit they are a very polished and talented outfit, They also appealed to the bulk of the audience there and seemed to go down a storm |
Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Folk Club From: Capo da Monty Date: 12 Nov 09 - 06:00 PM Thanks for the response JJ. You can't please all the people....... If most of your audience enjoyed them thats fine. Hope the Steve Tilston gig goes well next week. He's another of my favourite folkies! Regards CdM |
Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Fok Club From: Jack Campin Date: 12 Nov 09 - 06:53 PM Check out the review on gardensessions.co.uk. Their reviewer at least managed to stay awake. Judging by those YouTube clips, I wouldn't have. It doesn't make any sense to say they were poor box-office because they were English. Other "English acts" EFC could have booked include Jim Eldon, Mary Humphreys & Anahata, Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer, Speirs & Boden, Sheila Chandra, Jim Moray, The Boat Band... Maybe they got a crap response because they were crap? |
Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Fok Club From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 12 Nov 09 - 06:55 PM Jack...they are no crap they are stoatin |
Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Fok Club From: Capo da Monty Date: 13 Nov 09 - 06:25 PM Oh dear..... Probably not a review they will want to put on their website! It seems that it was not the type of music the reviewer liked or perhaps understood. How many so-called "folk" bands don't use any amplification these days? Electric drumkits are a tad easier to cart around and I would think that the writer of "Shower The People" and "Steamroller Blues" was one of the greatest influences on Contemporary "Folk" music. Anyway I certainly don't agree with the idea of performers being described as "crap" just because someone don't like 'em. My idea of Hell is a day of Bagpipes and Hurdygurdy's but I would not describe it as crap. |
Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Fok Club From: s&r Date: 13 Nov 09 - 07:03 PM What a sour and sad 'review'. I am pleased to know and love the band members of Elbow Jane. They are skilled, hard working and enthusiastic, and have a folk pedigree reaching back to their early childhood. Stu |
Subject: RE: Elbow Jane at Edinburgh Fok Club From: Johnny J Date: 14 Nov 09 - 04:00 AM Jack says... "It doesn't make any sense to say they were poor box-office because they were English." Experiences in recent years has shown us that English acts tend to draw a lower audience. That doesn't mean to say that we don't or won't book them. Next week, we have Steve Tilston who will attract a reasonably sized audience but it won't be anything like he deserves...unfortunately. We've had some of the acts you mentioned and would obviously be quite favourable towards the others. However, many of them don't tour up this neck of the woods that frequently and it can be expensive to bring them up for a "one off gig". There are obvious exceptions to this, of course. Established acts such as Vin Garbutt, The Carthys, Alan Taylor and so on never fail to get big crowds. It wasn't always the case. In the seventies and eighties, acts from South of the Border were very popular up here and many people wondered if EFC actually stood for The English Folk Club. :-) |
