Subject: RE: BS: SOS Worlds Oldest Clipper in danger From: frogprince Date: 04 Nov 09 - 09:51 AM We saw the Charles W. and the rest at Mystic 3-4 years ago. Delightful for inland folks who don't get to see such things. |
Subject: RE: BS: SOS Worlds Oldest Clipper in danger From: Charley Noble Date: 04 Nov 09 - 09:36 AM Greg- Yes, the Hesper and Luther Little, two four-masted lumber schooners, are no more. We used to enjoy prowling their tilted decks when we were teenagers. However, the C. F. Thayer, a lumber schooner docked at the National Maritime Museum in San Francisco, has recently been completely rebuilt. And the Charles W, Morgan at the Mystic Seaport Museum has been recently hauled out of the water for a complete rebuild. Best of luck to those still working to preserve the Adelaide. Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: SOS Worlds Oldest Clipper in danger From: Greg F. Date: 03 Nov 09 - 10:43 AM I'm saddened to learn that the Hesper and Luther Little were subjected to that indignity. I remember them fondly from more than 25 years ago. Seems that historic preservation is now largely extinct in the U.S. due to budget cuts in the name of "cutting taxes" whatever the ultimate cost. Same could be said for the arts in general. And education. "The Greatest Country In The World." Yeah, right. |
Subject: RE: BS: SOS Worlds ldest Clipper in danger From: Charley Noble Date: 03 Nov 09 - 09:05 AM Bradfordian- It is sad that this major remnant of the the Great Era of Commercial Sail appears doomed. I have been following her recent history for the last decade and no group appears to have the organizational skills and resources to rebuild her. In contrast the Australians did a great job rescuing the James Craig from the mudflats of Tasmania, bringing her back to Sydney and completely rebuilding her; they even sail her every two weeks! Our State of Maine also has an abysmal record of preserving its nautical heritage. There are no surviving example of the hundreds of huge cargo schooners that were built here in the 19th century and voyaged up and down the East Coast, and even across the Great Pond to Europe. The last two hulks were dragged out of the harbor and off to the town dump in Wiscasset just 5 years ago, only the tourist post cards attest to their existence. Charley Noble |
