What with elections to correct elections (now incorrected), the minions of Madoff facing time, balloon boys and ballots ballyhooed in the great off-year Obama test, we have been diverted, severely diverted, from a momentous event that almost changed the way the Antipodes eats and dreams. I refer of course to the adoption of a vegamite spread that is not pure vegamite. And the decision to name it "vegamite iSnack 2.0 "

Now, those from down under are actually divided between two types of people: "Vegamite" people and "Marmite" folks, In fact, the rest of the world is similarly divided between people who would be marmite people or vegamite people, given the choice, or a visit to ANZ territory.

I long ago was indissolubly linked to the Sanitarium brand of Marmite, of which I am possessor of the last 100 grams to be found north of Ketchikan (I am sure).

If you do have the two groups that robomatic suggests, then I am in a third group; those who view both spreads as abominations.

DH - Do you remember where you had it last? Have you checked down the back of the sofa?

Even mention of these two toxic substances is enough to destroy my appetite.

I read the article. The new product is a combination of Vegemite and cream cheese. It might be good, I dunno.

Australians aren't objecting to the product, they're objecting to the name, and I don't blame them a bit. "iSnack 2.0" sounds like the goop that Dave and Frank dug out of the compartments in their aluminum trays in the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey."

When the new product was launched there was an amazing reaction - lots of 'who do they think they are' & 'what idiot thought this up' hit the air waves & blogspace & there were loud cheers when the name was withdrawn.

I'm an occasional vegemite eater (I still have more that half a a breakfast serving I got when I was on holidays earlier this year), & the small jar in my cupboard is still half full even tho I bought it Aug 04 & it still has that rich salty vegemite smell.

I won't be trying the new product - I much prefer to add a slice of good cheese & other good stuff to my bread, butter & vegemite. Real vegemite is almost fat free (& deliciously salty!), the new product has about 8 times more fat.
