Songwriters of the Pacific Northwest - there is only ONE WEEK left to enter Victory Music's Great Northwest Shanty Sing-Off songwriting contest to win valuable prizes like a Tacoma Guitars acoustic guitar and widespread recognition and aplomb (What's a plomb, anyway?). The songwriting contest is open for submissions of all forms of sea (lake, river, etc.)-related music. We want to make certain that you understand that the contest is open to all forms of sea-songs. We don't want to limit your creativity; we want to celebrate it. >From traditionally-styled shanties, or sailor's work songs, to sea songs of every description - from songs of modern life at sea, to contemporary issues like Makah whaling, sea-borne lizards, new life in the bilge of the Kalakala, or songs including the sea, or other bodies of water in a variety of ways, sailor's other passions, and on to parodies of traditional or popular sea songs and shanties - it's all up to you as to what you enter. The contest is open to residents of Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, and British Columbia. Songwriters may enter two original, unpublished songs per entry. PLEASE NOTE: Entries must be postmarked by July 31. If you have a work in progress which for some reason beyond your control will almost, but not quite be ready by then, please contact us for a short extension, if needed. Finals will be held September 18th, at the Victory Music Shanty Stage, during the Commencement Bay Maritime Fest, in Tacoma, Washington. Finalists need to plan on performing at that time. Grand Prize is a Tacoma Guitars acoustic guitar worth approximately $1,000. Other prizes are being added and contestants should check the prize page of the contest's web site for updates. A special prize is being offered by No Quarter Given, a pirate publication, for the best piratical song. In addition to the prizes, all finalists are invited for a sail/row on the Bounty of Krister, a historical wooden long boat replica commanded by Captain John Burke. Songs are also possibly eligible for publication in No Quarter Given's, Pirate Song Book, and winners will be profiled in Victory Music's monthly music publication, the Victory Review, and will be special guests of honor at the September 18th, Saturday night, second annual, Victory Sings At Sea Concert. There will be much revelry.

(For additional information, please call Steve Brown, project manager, at 206-567-4504 (residence), 253-627-4853 (work), or via e-mail at nwshanty99@hotbot.com.)

If you win they want you to perform the weekend of Sept. 18th. I know because I'm entering. I had the pleasure of working on my song last night with two fellows locally who really helped it come to life with their harmonies. They like my song (a surprise to me) so I'm excited to see what the judges think. Heck, there is so much great local talent I think I'd be lucky to get an honorable mention. But I'll tell you what. I'll let you know who won!
