We hope to get up for a day or two but have the problem of children on New Year's Eve not being alloweed in the pubs so will have to miss out on that one. Does anyone know when the treasure hunt and ceilidh are happening?

You sure about those dates, Raggy? Most folks are going for New Year. at Dec-Jan rather than Jan-Feb.

I am always reluctant to ascribe sinister motives when an explanation of simple incompetence will suffice, Raggy. However since you have confessed in public, I am bound to believe you.

As I am sure you have also previously claimed that you "cain't get no .. satisfaction" I must decline to meet you at the time and place nominated (I doubt that either of us will feel up to it) but will offer a pint when we next meet, in recompense for spoiling your evil plan.

Les - Which of us is supposed to benefit from the tonsorial apparatus? As you know we are both thinning on top, but whereas Raggy likes to be well groomed I favour the gorgeously-dishevelled look. I am unsure which of us would wield what.

This New Year at Whitby is the lauch of Whitby Folk Photo Centre's new CD entitled A Full Head Of Stream recorded live at the Station Inn over folk week 2009. The four boxes set include 78 tracks more details & track listing here or on myspace here . Both WEB sites include some sample tracks.

Just to say that I thought New Year's Eve celebrations were for adults , not children. Also isn't space limited? I know I've been into the small room in the Station and been unable to find a seat as they were occupied by children who don't offer their seats to 'older people'.

Well, Mrs Scrooge, bearing in mind we don't actually use the Sation anymore for New Year that doesn't apply! My children have been a part of the sing around crowd in the Tap and Spile as was for many years, somesince before they were born. The former landlords always made New Year a regulars and friends night so the children could join in the fun. I wouldn't expect to take them into a busy pub open to everyone on New Year's eve because I doubt they would enjoy it but I do not agree that it is for adults only. New Year is for anyone who wants to celebrate. We will be enjoying what time we do have in Whitby with good friends and will be with them in spirit(s?) as the bells ring in the new year!

Notwithstanding the previous emails, the FILO has no limitations, children AND adults are permitted as long as they all contribute. There's plenty room, a warm friendly atmosphere and 'space' to flex the elbows, good music and because it's off the beaten track tends to be quality than quantity - no 'rent a crowd' It could be habit forming

Kick off for the ceilidh is approx 8pm on Tuesday, entry is by donation (suggested £3 minimum)to cover the cost of hiring the theatre, any surplus going to the RNLI, the treasure hunt on wednesday people should gather at the Station Tavern from 1.30 onwards

Thanks for these - they are great - will send you mine if they are any good. We had a great time though didn't manage to get out on Sunday due to snow & ice so had to stay another night! Luckily our house was still available. Thanks to Jude, Nick & everyone else involved in the organisation. Its good to be able to llok forward to coming to Whitby again at New Year!

The Endeavour was open this evening. It was open last night for the people who were in before the waters rose and were "forced" to stay there until they subsided. Alas alack !

I don't know about the Station at the moment, the power was still off in parts of the East side this evening and I believe the Station was flooded yesterday evening. The Fire Brigade were outside the Station, this morning presumably pumping out the cellar.

However by Christmas all should be well .......... hopefully.

Nothing to stop you taking wellies, mops and buckets and spades to help the clear up which is pretty devastating so near Christmas. We are awaiting tonight's high tide on the Trent and hoping and praying it is not as bad as last night's as an aegir also predicted. Oh well all the instruments are off the floor so that's the main thing.

The Middle Earth and Fleece remain closed after the tidal surge of last week and look likely to remain so over Christmas. The Middle Earth is undergoing a full refurbishment and I believe the Fleece will have to do the same as the refit they underwent recently has been extensively damaged. Even the floor in the front bar has been distorted by the volume of water. Downstairs at the Angel was also badly affected and is undergoing work. I do not know if the upstairs bar is operating but will endeavour to find out this afternoon. All other pubs are back to normal trading.
