Subject: Mismatched venue & artist? Go figure!!! From: katlaughing Date: 28 Jul 99 - 01:30 PM Just had to tell you all about a weird, IMO, jutaxpostion of artists and venues. ON NPR, this morning, they were reading from their concert database. In Cheyenne, right now, the "Granddaddy of the all", Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo is going on. Big names, big bulls, big competition, big tourist draw, big everything, including names in entertainment. Real cowboys and wannabes, etc., but as Western cowboy as you can get. Anyway, it struck me as kinda funny and a sign of the "times they are a'changing" when I heard the top stars tonight are going to be the Beach Boys and Credence Clearwater Revisited. Now, the latter I can believe a little bit more than the beach Boys! I guess it has to do with baby boomers and where they are really coming from than any wannabes being pure to the cowboy genre! Do you knwo of any similar instances of seemingly mismatched venues and artists? I guess they will not be considered mismatched by the promotions board as I am sure it'll be sold out tonight! katlaughing&shakingherhead |

ME at the Four Seasons Hotel tommorow night, singing Canadian folk songs to a bunch of Fram oil filter salesmen. Holy Cow, it's weird being a musician sometimes! Subject: RE: Mismatched venue & artist? Go figure!!! From: campfire Date: 28 Jul 99 - 01:45 PM Rick, that's gotta be better than me, in a "biker" bar, (I didn't know it at the time) singing John Denver songs (and the like) at an open mike. Ever hear a Harley rider howl??? Made me expand my repertoire - never wanted to be in that setup again. campfire

Subject: RE: Mismatched venue & artist? Go figure!!! From: Rick Fielding Date: 28 Jul 99 - 02:13 PM Camp, I used to play a very questionable (biker) bar, chock full of 6'2" hairy, bearded, foul-mouthed, multi-tatooed, pierced, knife-wieldin', trouble makin' patrons. (and those were the women!) The big request was "Ferry Cross the Mersey". After I'd sung that, they were pussycats. I think I'd stay away from the John Denver! Rick |

Subject: RE: Mismatched venue & artist? Go figure!!! From: campfire Date: 28 Jul 99 - 02:28 PM Well, that pretty much describes the patrons in the bar I was in, too. Not really sure WHY the owner had an open mike in that place. And I gave up the John Denver right about then, a little more than 10 years ago! Although I still sing "Follow Me", but ONLY when my mother requests it. Don't know why she likes that song so much. campfire |

Subject: RE: Mismatched venue & artist? Go figure!!! From: Art Thieme Date: 31 Jul 99 - 09:08 PM Hasek, Were you really married to John Denver? So sad about his crash. My condolences go out to you. __________________________________________________________ Cathy Barton & Dave Para and I were hired to play at a festival/concert on the banks of the Mississippi (a town in Iowa) at the SAME TIME that the hugely amplified Charlie Daniels and his band were playing about 50 yards away. 98% of the audience were at his stage. I did my set & just moved my lips & never had to make a chord. Just played air guitar---nobody even noticed. Then went & got my check & left... Later, they sent me a thank you letter; said I'd done a fine set. I mentioned in another thread about my gig at a bar in Winnipeg (something Cathy Fink & Duck Donald found for me)where a bunch of folks who wanted to listen got into a brawl with a bunch of drunks who wanted to be rowdy. All I really remember was standing on stage pickin' while a chair sailed in slow motion from the left side of the room to the right side & then crashed in splinters against the wall. Right then I broke into "SIMPLE GIFTS". Most everyone quit fighting and started singing along. Ah, nostalgia. Art |

Subject: RE: Mismatched venue & artist? Go figure!!! From: WyoWoman Date: 31 Jul 99 - 09:36 PM Once in Santa Fe, I went to a concert at which David Bromberg opened for Joan Armatrading. I really like each's music, but talk about a different crowd. David's gig was practically destroyed by Joan's rowdy crowd who had no interest in this "hippie" when they were ready to hear the power version of "I Will Walk Under Ladders." And when she came out, that was the first one she did -- the sound was so loud it made my solar plexus vibrate. It was wonderful, but very, very loud, and very unlike anything BRomberg performed.
