DK if this belongs in "BS" but it's about a guitar company so I put it above the line.

Seems the Gibson Guitar Company is among America's 15 Most Hated Companies, according to The Business Insider

Current management sucks, employees are treated badly, and the quality of the instruments is declining.

Gibson Guitar is the lowest rated company on the Glassdoor list. Gibson is privately held. The firm is based in Nashville. Gibson got into financial trouble in the early 1980s and was rescued by a group of investors in 1986. Gibson had several layoffs that cut its workforce by about 20% by mid-2009. There have been a number of complaints about the quality of the company's products recently. In November, it was revealed that Gibson was being investigated for violating the Lacey Act, a key piece of environmental law, for importing endangered species of rosewood from Madagascar. The alleged violation has gone over poorly with Gibson customers and may hurt sales.

I don't see how, in the overall scheme of things, Gibson could qualify as being one of the 15 most hated companies in the US. They may be a big dog in high-end guitar land, but that's essentially a niche market. Not one person out of a thousand will purchase a new Gibson guitar in the next year. When viewed in terms of number of employees, number of customers, and overall effect on the economy, they're small potatoes. I'd say their inclusion on this list probably reflects someone's personal bias more than any consideration of objective criteria.

I'm not saying the current incarnation of Gibson doesn't suck, only that they don't belong on the list even if they do suck. They're not a big enough company for their suckiness to have much in the way of national ramification. If they're hated, it's by a very small number of people.

Why knock a geat American institution, you should be proud to have such a great company like Gibson manufacturing musical instruments.

Just look back at the monumental impact the Gibson guitar has had on the music industry over the past 50 years.

I wish they were situated here in the UK!

Why not criticize their labor policies if they exploit and have bad practices?
Remember that slavery was once a great American institution as well.

As to it being a personal diatribe, what's wrong with that? I find that their practices
are personally offensive. If they do that, then you better believe it's personal.

Not so much in defense of Gibson, but these points probably describe way more than half of US companies:
Financial troubles in the early '80s -- not very unique.
Layoffs in 2009 -- good grief! Who didn't?
Recent complaints about slipping quality -- yeah, that singles them out, doesn't it ?
And the Lacey Act a "key" piece of environmental law? Seriously?

Stringsinger, this piece is masquerading as objective reporting, so no, there is no place in it for personal diatribe. Although you're perfectly welcome to express it here.
By the way, how do you get from the vague statement about layoffs in that article to your statement about their practices being exploitative and personally offensive? Do you have another source for that?

Get real! Anyone can flippin' be persnollay offended by ANYTHING. Ya don't have to be a flippin' roacket sientist to figger that one out, eh? For instance, Mr flippin' high land man...I am personally offended by yer hole flippin' atitude! So try that one on fer size, eh?

As far as Gibson goes, I have pawnd a fair few of them over the years. There seem to be a lotta Gibson guitars arownd Blind River. I been findin' 'em in people's bedrooms when they are not home. I figger they gotta be worth somethin' if people are buyin' 'em, know what I mean? But I do not think Ozzie Osbourne has ever played a Gibson, and that is why I pawned the ones I....borrowed...becoz if Ozzie don't play a Gibson, then it is not the top of the line. Ozzie would only play the best. Like Fender. I think Gibsons are somewhere part ways up the line, but they aint' at the top.

Anyways, I needed the money for beer.
