Im am a long time admirer of Gordon Lightfoot. I have lots of his records and used to do some of his songs.

Like others here I just wouldn't have recognosed him.

I agree L.H. he does sing it nicely. But as a country singer I don't think he would have made it as far as he did with his crossover to folk.
Lightfoot will always be a favorites, just like Prine, Dylan, Kristofferson and a Hamilton boy by the name of Ray Materick.

My mother use to have all his records, and she use to go see him at the Stateline there on the Idaho/Montana border, so I grew up listening to him. Several years ago I got her the Gordon Lightfoot box set...and then I found out he was coming to town, and so got two tickets. One for her and one for me. It was awesome.

Thanks for link. Several decades back, I had the chance to see Lightfoot at a concert in Sacramento. The sound was awful. I still consider it one of my favorite concerts. Hey, it was Gordon Lightfoot.

Enjoyed the dancers too. One of the figures was something we call Two Little Hobos here in Arkansas and is among the rarer dances done here these days.

I thought I'd posted earlier. Hmmmm...I really enjoyed the clip, but am glad he want folk, too.

The dancing was a lot of fun. It reminded me of the square dances we did in elementary school and the ones my mom and dad played for. Fun stuff!

Wow! I never knew that Gordon was once a country singer. I knew him only as a folk singer. I saw him in a folk concert in Montreal years ago. A true Canadian icon, a great songwriter and singer.

If I'd have heard that song and not seen Gord sitting there, I'd have thought it was Bobby Curtola or Tommy Hunter or anybody except Gordon Lightfoot.

I believe Gord was still on the show when he broke into folk as one half of the Two Tones and played a 4 string guitar. I saw them quite often at the Village Corner Club in Toronto.

Do you remember Mike Cavendish from the Village Corner? It so happens he's a regular attendee at a local song circle I go to these days. He's got various photos and memorabilia from back then, including one cool photo of a very young Joan Baez sunning herself on the roof of some building. He's also got a lot of outrageous stories about the people and the times...I figure at least half of them are true! ;-)

The man is indefatiguable !!

Gord used to vist the Uk regularly back in the 70's I caught a couple of concerts then. Red Shea was with him and I thought he was the perfect back-up to Gord.

The did a BBC series called In Concert featuring top Country/Folk ( I hope this doesn't start another feud).

It must have been around 1970....?? Red Shea was with him on the televised concert.

Does anyone know what happened to Red ?/ I haven't heard anything about him in years.

"From 1965-1970 Red Shea was in the famed trio that cut several timeless albums for United Artists and went on to record with Lightfoot during his even more celebrated Reprise Records era. Shea left the touring band in 1970, but continued to record with Lightfoot until 1975. He hosted his own Canadian variety show, played with Ian Tyson, and became band leader for Tommy Hunter's TV show in the 1980s on CBC.

Lightfoot met Red Shea in 1960 while they both worked on the CBC country series, Country Hoedown, Lightfoot as a member of the Singin' Swingin' Eight and Shea as a member of the Red & Les Trio. The trio was made up of Red, his brother Les and bassist Bill Gibbs.

Album Discography credits with Lightfoot include: Did She Mention My Name, Sunday Concert, Sit Down Young Stranger, Summer Side of Life, Don Quixote, Old Dan's Records, Sundown and Harmony (released in 2004). I'm open to correction here, but didn't Gord Lightfoot and Anne Murray appear on a CBC show with Oscar Brand called "Let's Sing Out" or something of that nature. Also the fellow Gene (forgot his last name) who penned "Snowbird" was one of the people on the show.

I am sorry to hear he is not with us any more. My belated condolences go out to his family.

I didn't know him but had seen him a couple of times.

I was entranced by his playing and I tried to "borrow" some of his style when I performed some of Gordon's songs.

The nearest I got was on my own version of Me & Bobby McGee but I know I didn't do Red any justice with my rendition.

Red Shea always amazed me. Caught two shows back in the 70ties at Place des Arts in Montreal. Still remember in amazement how the two complemented each other. When I first heard Bobby McGee I thought it was Gordon who wrote it. Never thought about looking to make sure. Gordon seldom done any other artist numbers so I just took it for granted that it was his tune. When I discovered that it was some guy by the name of Kris Kristofferson I just had to look this chap up. And what a great discovery he became. Then Kris help find a great one as well by the name of John Prine.
