Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Bill D Date: 20 Apr 10 - 06:02 PM well, I have a special love for version 7.53, which had all the little shortcuts set to MY liking, so I keep it 'over at the side' for certain operations, like collecting a bunch of images of wood & trees from sites where they are on different pages. 7.53 just 'behaves' the way I prefer. I'd bet that whatever problem you're having is either not in Opera, or will be corrected soon. I still will not let them upgrade 10.10 to 10.51 until I am sure I really want it...but then I won't need it, as I HAVE 10.51. I have to decide whether I really like the redesigned interface. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Bill D Date: 20 Apr 10 - 04:12 PM Hmmm..I suspect a problem beyond Opera itself. Conflict with security...or just a bad download. But no matter what it is, it doesn't help YOU. I'd spend a wee bit of time in Opera help forums, just in case others had seen this. I have no idea why *I* am spared....maybe I 'hold my mouth right'.. (old Kansas expression.) |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Richard Bridge Date: 20 Apr 10 - 01:44 PM It just crashed again when I went to download 10.10 to replace it. Using IE for the time being. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Bill D Date: 20 Apr 10 - 01:22 PM ??wierd...have you tried right clicking on the bar and selecting 'customize' and getting the back button with the extra 'down' arrow which lets you select a a particular link in the 'back' sequence? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Richard Bridge Date: 20 Apr 10 - 01:14 PM Well, it just did it AGAIN - the main problem seems to be the back button. Using it causes about 75% of my Opera crashes. |

From: Bill D Date: 20 Apr 10 - 01:02 PM You can always get older versions...you can even have several installed at the same time and compare results. http://www.opera.com/download/ But... I have had no problems, and if there are reports of problem, Opera has a history of fixing those which are real, (and not just a result of incompatibility with sites that specifically ignore standards in order to cater to IE or Firefox). Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Richard Bridge Date: 20 Apr 10 - 12:31 PM I am seriously thinking of giving up on Opera 10.5.1. Is there a roll-back, and if not how do I save my bookmarks? And how do I turn off upgrades? |

From: GUEST Date: 20 Apr 10 - 10:45 AM FireFox Portable (3.6.2 right now) has an English dictionary but the compilers were not that diligent. eg favour comes out favor. No. You can't say the compilers were not diligent. It's simply that you have a US English dictionary. Not wrong, just different. I find when I am updating Firefox it's almost invariable US English. They don't usually seem to have an British English version available. There may well be British English dictionaries available for Firefox, but I don't find it worth the effort of looking for one. I just add the UK spellings to the dictionary provided as the need arises. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 20 Apr 10 - 06:40 AM Yep frames cause problems, which is why cutting edge web designers now don't use them as much as when they were the 'fad'... now the fad is JS and all that overloading of visual garbage... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Mr Red Date: 20 Apr 10 - 06:37 AM Yup I installed 10.5.1 on a machine and found JavaScript for my website (the reason for trying it) works on the home page but not on sub-pages that have frames & probably reside in sub-folders. The weird thing is that of the floating layers the one at the top works but the one at the bottom is out of sight and you can't reach the bottom anyway. Yet similar code works on the homepage. I haven't been back to the forum to see what they say. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Gurney Date: 16 Apr 10 - 03:34 AM Thanks for your trouble, Bill. I'll do some messing about myself. Or maybe just use Firefox. I have no particular hatred of any browser. I only moved away from I.E. because a Microsoft update wrecked it in my early computer days, and I had to get another browser to get an update for the update..... I assume that the 'Blossom' header was an actual header, as it is on MS Word, and that's why it is separated, whereas the header on Alison's thread is merely spaced to look like a header. I'm trying to remember if highlighting used to highlight the blank lines too, but I can't recall. I am sure I've never pulled anything to another program to modify it, and I've copied a few sets of words from the D.T. I've never used any printer friendly buttons, either Thanks again. Chris. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Bill D Date: 15 Apr 10 - 11:31 PM I just went to "A Blossom Fell" in Opera 10.51 and simply told it 'print', and it gave me both the lyrics as shown and the images on the left. Now my question is, when you say 'highlight-and-print', are you expecting it to just print what you highlighted, as you see it? It don't work that way. You get an 'unformatted bunch of lines'. (I have no idea how it used to work, because I never did it that way.) I got an exact reproduction of the page (in black & white) by NOT highlighting anything....just by telling Opera 'print this page'. In order to leave out the images on the left, I had to highlight & copy the lyrics area and paste them into an editing program...like WordPad (I use one called MetaPad.) This way you see exactly what it will print. The Viagra song....same thing. You can't just highlight words....you need to copy the parts you want and put them into a program which understands what you want....However...for this song, you do have the 'printer friendly' button which will give you that single post...although it will include the headers: The Mudcat Café TM Thread #40710 Message #584316 Posted By: alison 01-Nov-01 - 07:46 PM Thread Name: Lyr/Chords Add: Viagra Song: 'Hard times come...' Subject: Lyr Add: VIAGRA SONG: 'Hard times come again. I have about 5 older version of Opera...(back to version 6)... I may mess with them, just to see if I can see what has changed, but I LOVE this new one, and would 'suggest' you come to terms with whatever its requirements are. *grin* (It IS possible to go back and get ANY old version of Opera, and I suppose that if you had a particular feature you wanted, you could always have two versions at once...my 6-7 don't bother me. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Gurney Date: 15 Apr 10 - 07:29 PM Bill, I just went to theguitarguy (on Opera) and highlighted the first song- 'A Blossom Fell'- and clicked print and got the same result: A Blossom Fell Words and music by Howard Barnes, Howard Cornelius & Dominic John Recorded by Nat "King" Cole, 1955 A7 D6 Cdim Em7 A7+5 D It settled softly on the lips you turned to me D9 Fdim Em7 etc etc etc... The lyrics are set out on TGG with the chords above them, and are printing line-by-line unspaced but with punctuation. A header as shown, and 7 and-a-bit lines of typeface. The last thing on Mudcat that I tried to highlight -and-print was The Viagra Song from the thread still current. I got: Just sang this is paltalk and got asked for the lyrics, so here they are...I was given them by a friend so I can't say who wrote it.....The Viagra Song (Hard Times come again some more) As he pauses at the chemist and counts out many coins etc etc etc 9 lines of typeface. Hope this makes sense to you. Chris. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Bill D Date: 15 Apr 10 - 04:31 PM Gurney... is this problem on ANY text...or just in Mudcat? The database? I ask because there IS a "printer friendly" button in various places in Mudcat. In many places, lyric pages have ads, images...etc. on the same page, and you probably don't want all that. In Opera 10.51 on my PC, the 'print' button takes me to the default printer's options, where I select various things like color, paper size...etc.....but it assumes I intend to print everything I see on the page. If you will show me a set of lyrics you had problems with, I'll see if I can replicate the problem... or at least report NO problem. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Geoff the Duck Date: 15 Apr 10 - 07:02 AM Richard - About a month back, when I turned my computer on, a pop-up appeared on screen. I was suspicious, and checked it out for nasties. It turned out that it was something Microsoft had sent in response to an EU legal ruling about uncompetitive practices - see Wikipedia article. Basically, Microsoft have been forced to tell Europe that there are other browsers which are not Internet Explorer. The pop-up links to a web site, presumably owned by MS, which contains a list of alternative browsers, and links to their own web sites - http://www.browserchoice.eu. You may find something there which gives you an alternative that suits you. Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Gurney Date: 15 Apr 10 - 05:44 AM Opera previously printed directly, and as the selected item/song appeared onscreen. Just select, and print. Now, I select, but the preview shows the thread, not the selection, and if I select on the preview, as I said, I just get a block of text, no spacings at all, no font variance, all crammed into the top quarter of the page. Makes me think it is something in the selection operation that is 'wrong.' Why do you insert the extra step to the editor, Bill? Security? As I said, I.E. and Firefox print songs OK, as previously Opera did. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Bill D Date: 15 Apr 10 - 12:03 AM ahh.. I also have switched to Avast in the last few weeks. ?? Gurney... I never even try to print directly from any browser. I C&P lyrics into a trusted editor and print from there. You might read about standards compliance, but printing FROM a browser is usually to get images and everything else. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Gurney Date: 14 Apr 10 - 11:43 PM Oh, and, this Opera will NOT print lyrics as they are writ. It will print a selection only as a block of text, not spaced, or with headers, etc. Obviously something deselected, because I.E. and Firefox print lyrics OK. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 14 Apr 10 - 01:50 PM I would suggest you look at the other programs on your computer. I found that for a while my antivirus (AVG) wasn't playing nicely with IE in particular. I use Firefox for most things, but to log on at work in secure email and such, I must use IE to get the full functionality. I switched antivirus programs (I read the reviews and use Avast free right now) and while there is a little lag time as the links are check, it isn't nearly like it was before, and it isn't slow enough to make me look for a new program. I have Opera, but haven't loaded it on the computer again since the latest OS work (installed Win 7 Ultimate). SRS |

Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Bill D Date: 13 Apr 10 - 07:47 PM Opera 10 has bookmarks...you just didn't find them in the newly designed menu I mentioned. You can click the Opera symbol in the upper-left corner to get to settings and 'almost' everything else. As for spell checking, you can ADD any dictionary you wish...just highlight any word, right click it, and see the option to add UK English among many. And Opera STILL has the keyboard shortcuts that I love....(but, which must be specifically enabled.) |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Gurney Date: 13 Apr 10 - 03:09 AM Can't remember which version this is, installed in February, but the first time I used it, it was very unreliable. I removed it and re-downloaded, and have had no problems since. Don't like it much, though. No bookmarks, just speed dial, and although it has spellcheck, it isn't English English and it doesn't have a very big vocabulary. I don't use Ebay much. No presence in this country. When I have gone there (US, UK, Oz) it worked. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: Bill D Date: 12 Apr 10 - 10:04 PM I use Opera 10.5+ as my main browser(s) (2 versions...the one they called 'Unite' and newer one with the redesigned toolbars and access to tools)... they work fine. Now, I do know that 'some' sites treat Opera as an orphan step-child and do not...umm... 'support' it. But Opera is in better compliance with official wes standards than I.E. or others....it's just that they design the sites to fit IE and Firefox. Perhaps that is the issue with eBay... I almost never use eBay...so... *shrug* |
Subject: RE: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: jeddy Date: 12 Apr 10 - 08:10 PM opera SEEMS TO BE WORKING FINE FOR ME SO FAR. oops.... Subject: Tech: Opera 10.5.1 unstable? From: GUEST, Richard Bridge on Internet Explorer Date: 12 Apr 10 - 05:45 AM I'm on the browser from the dark side because Opera has been a pain in the bum since version 10.5.1 installed itself. Unstable, frequent unexplained crashes, and won't work on ebay (and ebay say thay can't get it to work for them either). Has anyone else found it so? What's a chap who hates IE's bloatware and thinks Firefox even more bloated to do? |
