No law if perfect, and the Civil Rights Law is no exception. Look at the disaster that has been generated by Affirmative Action.

The only people who would criticize the Civil Rights Law are those who espouse racism.
They would eschew the only decent protection black people have against the Rand Pauls of the world. A lot of people today are becoming openly racist. The "flaws" in the Civil Rights Law can be interpreted as taking a luke-warm position on enforcing the protection of black or Hispanic people.

Just because we have a black president, many are under the illusion that racism is dead.

Rand Paul, also, is anti-abortion. He has said that if there were unanimous Christianity
that there wouldn't be a need for government.

Rand Paul does not represent the widest scope of the American people. He is much too partisan in his views.

I turned off on Libertarians and Libertarianism a long time ago. Three reasons:

1) An encounter with Libertarians who were jerks in an early internet forum (when AOL was the main source of those).
2) A local primary election where the Libertarians voted for one of their own apparently unaware that he'd left the State!
3) The simple notion that small govnernment is a non-starter. You need Big government to protect you from big business. Because power corrupts, but so does weakness.

Mouser: "The Republicrats have already taken away too many of our civil rights. Time we started giving them back. Let's start by overturning the Patriot Act."

Yes, that was done by 'executive order', under Bush. The fact that Obama has NOT rescinded that order, by 'executive order' should give all of you pro-Obama--anti-Bushites at least a little pause to wonder.....why not??
Maybe, you've been deceived....and all this hoop-ti-do is just partisan hype!

That's what somebody would say when they want to take civil rights away. "This whole civil rights thing --- it's got some problems." The Republicrats have already taken away too many of our civil rights. Time we started giving them back. Let's start by overturning the Patriot Act.

But to get the topic back into play, it's becoming apparent that people across the country are beginning to realize that Civil Rights--as it was sold to the American people--has a lot of flaws in it.

Bobert has it dead right.   It's also interesting that even Sarah, with her finely tuned political antennae, may have guessed wrong on this one. She's now trying attack Obama from the left-- alleging that the reason the federal government has not been putting a lot of pressure on BP til recently is that Obama had oil firm contributions.

It's obviously the "more populist than thou" approach. But with her own ties to, and enthusiasm for--the oil industry--this might not play too well.    Doesn't ring exactly true.

Wonder what Paul would be saying and doing if his Tea Party folks were in power today dealing with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico???

Hmmmmmmm???

Me thinks bad timing for these folks... They say they want their governement/country back... From whom, pray tell??? Seems that BP owns it and it's up to the govrenment (HORRORS!!!) to wrestle it back from BP and their buddies (oil companies)... Doesn't bode well for the Tea Party... The party might be over before it gets going...

One more time: the last time we saw Ron Paul on the media stage he was running for president. He had to appeal to a national audience. Rand Paul is running for the Senate from the state of Kentucky. He has to appeal only to voters in Kentucky.

Both Ron and Rand have aspirations beyond Kentucky. Rand is a Libertarian/Christian,
a dangerous combination to American Democracy. Ron has a history of disregard for the government intercession in the Civil Rights for African-Americans. Read his earlier newsletters if you don't think so. Rand is Randall taking his name as a suggestion of Ayn Rand, the trashy novelist and Libertarian propagandist.

Who is John Galt? He may be an incipient fascist and a propagandist who is dangerous to
democracy in the US.

We are looking at a brand of fascism. Don't take my word for it. Read what the Pauls have to say. Read all of it.

If you go to www.AlterNet.com , you will see a current article outlining the inconsistencies in his agenda, including that he does not want the government to make anyone do anything except to bail them out when they need help. I presume that includes paying taxes to pay for the services.

Well, I'm sure that the Native Americans will vote for Paul... I mean, why not??? If Paul had his way the "New World" would revert back to them...

Actually. I like it that a guy with these wacko ideas is in the race... We need folks like this on occasion to start overdue conversations that no one else wants to bring up... Like citizenship... And the role of government... I mean, the Repubs have owned the "anti-government" vote for as long time but are more than likely ap'paul'ed the reality of what Paul wants 'cause the Repubs love nuthin' more than to grow government bigger and bigger... They can't get it big enough... I used to think it was just "starve the beast" thinking on their part but, hey, I think they really do like big government... And lots of it, too... Plenty of rules for the working class... Can't get enough... No rules on the corporations but, hey???

The irony of Libertarianism is that there is no historical example to show that it ever worked. In fact, when applied by Greenspan or Milton Friedman, it has been shown to fail.
Keynesian economics however worked quite well during the Roosevelt Administration.

Paul made a disquieting remark about Christianity calling it "the basis of our society" and that "We wouldn't need Government If everyone were Christian." It appears that this is the Libertarian right-wing equivalent of Sharia Law.

Rand Paul, I will go further, represents the kind of collective "individualism" that spawned
a dictator with a 2% popularity in the Thirties in Germany to a full-blown national acceptance.

Some say "it can't happen here" but with all of the gun-toting at the respective "Pee Parties",
don't count it out.

Rand Paul is from Kentucky.
They are a little nuts in Kentucky. The governor of the state has to swear that he has never fought a duel and is not now engaged to fight one.
Kentuckians love whiskey, horse racing and partying, but they never miss church on Sunday.

They are very nice people in Kentucky, but just a little nuts.

If anything, the oil spill should guiet the Rand Paul's of the world for awhile... InLousianna we have a high profile Governor who is begging for, ahhhhhh, more federal government...

I mean, we have had a modified version of Rand Paul's world vision since Reagan with less regulation and even when there regulations are in place, less enforcement... That has been the political climate in the US going back 30 some years... Problem is??? It ain't workin' at any level... Allowing the corportists to police themselves has led to a major redistribution of wealth away from our working class toward the rich... It has led to the worst working conditions since the 70s... It has led to massive corruption and the rise of the lobbiests as the new "shadow government"... So, last month it was a mine disaster... This month, the oil spill... Next month, who knows... This is a matter of reaping what is sewn...

And Rand Paul want more of this???

Beam me up, Scottie... One guy thinks that pot should be legal so everyone thinks that he knows everything... He doesn't know squat!!!

The GOP is already a minority party, and they are getting highjacked by the most extreme nutjobs within their ranks. The extreme right may seem to be "resurgent" because they're making a lot of noise, amplified by plenty of media coverage, but they really don't represent many more actual votes than they ever have.

Idiots like this guy are going to be winning more and more Republican primaries, only to be stomped in general elections by all but the most incompetant Dems and/or independants.

There are lots of people in the Gulf area screaming for the federal government to do something, other that point fingers.

The Army Corps (or as Obama says, "corpse") of Engineers should have brought their huge booms to block the oil from reaching shore. It's been 34 days and the administration still does nothing. They have lots of oil-removal equipment that we taxpayers have bought. Where is it?

Ken "Sleazy" Salazar says that BP is gonna pay! How much oil does that stop?

The news media have decided to focus on a Republican candidate and dissect what he said. That diverts the public's attention away from the real problems: the oil spill and the Obama administration's pathetic response to it.

No laws--That's anarchism.

Utah's definition, "One who doesn't need a policeman to tell him what to do."

There seems to be this under-current in their thought processes - whether they understand it themselves, that: "People who have money must deserve to have money, and rules about MAKING money are meant to protect the right to keep making money...and the right to manipulate the rules."

I am aware that no one would admit to that phrasing, but that's the way many of them act. Add to that the idea that 'money' somehow determines 'class status'. and you get a set of principles that affect political ideals.

Yes, he's an eye doctor and opposed to Medicare and "Obamacare" -- he's especially opposed to cutting the payments doctors receive Medicare and Medicaid. Odd, isn't it?

Rand Paul has utopian beliefs. He thinks government does not need to create many laws or regulations because most people will "do the right thing". Ha! Get real.

Given that he's an eye-doctor it should be understandable why his social justice theory is based on nothing more than "an eye for an eye."

You ought to hear what my Democratic friends in Kentucky are saying. "YAAAA-hooooooooo! We got a decent chance!" sort of sums it up.

Mr Paul is confused-ous.

No idea who this guy was until recently. I just read through his list of political views, and out of the whole mess, I find I agree with him on two—and only two—points. He favors legalizing medical marijuana (not a really big issue with me) and he's opposed to government bail-outs of banks and companies in general, including those that are "two big to fail."

Everything else he's for sets my teeth on edge.

The name "Rand" rang a bell. Turns out it's his actual given name (Randal), but what struck me early on is that a lot of what he advocates sounds like Ayn Rand talking through her fictional John Galt.

Decades ago, I was gung-ho Ayn Rand, having read all her stuff.

Then I grew up.

I don't believe he will win the general election to the U.S. Senate in November because of quotes like this: "a free society will abide unofficial, private discrimination, even when that means allowing hate-filled groups to exclude people based on the color of their skin."
He defeated a more mainstream RNC endorsed candidate in the primary who may have had better shot at winning the general. This shows that, as I've said from the start, the Tea Partiers are much more of a threat to Republicans than Democrats. I think some in the Republican mainstream must be starting to think that the Tea Party movement is really an insidious secret plot of the DNC. ;<)

I think he found out the difference of being a candidate trying for a nomination, and a candidate who has won a nomination. Suddenly the press has to take you seriously, and if they don't like what you have to say, they'll go after you.

The same thing happened to Sarah Palin once she was place on the Republican ticket.

Paul was smart to decline to go on Press the Meat. I suspect he'll just concentrate on winning the Senate seat in Kentucky after this, and will avoid national exposure for a while.

Hey, Eb and Magz...

This guy ain't gonna be runnin' the show and his idea's ain't gonna become mainstream...

That is reality... There have always been fringe anarchists but the rest of the population is smart enough to not turn the keys over to them...

No fear...

He's loopy enough to knock Sarah Palin off of the front page.

They'll probably run for office together somewhere. Scary times ahead.

His 'platform' is what comes from allowing slogans and wishes to guide one's polices, rather than practical answers that might actually do something useful, even if not perfect.

He has no concept of what might happen if some theoretical Congress actually tried to pass legislation based on his antiquated notion of 'free enterprise'.

Were Rand Paul become this country's next guru it wouldn't surprise me. Hardly anything lately surprises me. I think I've outlived my time.

Let's just say that I don't hpold his views... He is for letting the corporations police themselves entirely... Check it out... Last month's mine disaster... This month's oil spill... Next month's ______________... Crooks cannot be left in charge of policing themselves... It doesn't work at any level...

Also, related to Paul's thinking that government has no right to "govern", I am fearfulll that if the country went along with his views that we could turn back the clock to any year that makes him happy... I mean, if he can justify "segregation", whcih he has, then what next??? Slavery???

I'm serious... His message may play well to anarchists but I don't see his world view as serving the general population...

So far, IMO Mr. Paul has clearly demonstrated what happens when a rigid philosophical principle encounters the real world. And yet, he has supporters.
