My son is there for a while. He likes pretty much all music, doesn't perform, though. Anyone know what's on in the environs?

Gurney, is that one of those local vernacular names for something the rest of us might read as "Something or other easton?"**bg** I love learning about new places, but I need to be educated to suss this one out.:-)

Thanks,

kat

Dontcha know, Kat? Nuneaton (pronounced nun-eatin') is a family friendly town. And if you need more details, there's a Wikipedia article.

Hmmmm. Don't think I'll include it on my next UK itinerary, though. I never thought of nuns as being very tasty.

Kat, it's a town in Warwickshire, England. Pronounced 'warricksheer, by the way, Dionne notwithstanding.
Originally, Joe, I believe it was Nuns Eatun. That's what I learned at school there, anyway. A Saxon farm by the little river there, (ea & tun)and later a convent or priory.
My home town. Pat Cooksey and I ran a folkclub at the Cock and Bear pub there long ago.
So far, it looks as if it was the last one ever.....
After I left, they started the Bedworth FF a couple of miles up the road. Makes you want to spit.

Thanks, Joe and Gurney. I meant no offense, it's just so fun to try to figure out place names I am not familiar with. Sounds as though it was an interesting place to be; too bad about the loss of folkclubs, though. Thanks, again.

Nuneaton. My parents married there in 1943, at the Registry Office. That's really all you need to know... :-)

Well, I can understand why Americans might not have noticed, but if any Brits have not noticed before, there is a pretty neat festival in November for people who can get to Bedworth festival . And the rest of the year there is the folk club .

And why is this below the line?

If he's got transport a good start is to go to The Tump Folk Club at Coombe Social Club, Brinklow Rd. Coventry CV3 2HY on Thursday nights and talk to the local folkies who will let him know what is on in the area.

Kitty, it's there because I put it there originally. The logic is that it's just chat about what's on, not the more serious stuff that is above the line, such as advertising a particular club event.

I do take your point, though. I thought about where to put it, and decided to relegate it to the pits.

At the Auckland FF here, the back page of the programme has a list of local folk music clubs, folk dance, and ethnic clubs. Good idea, I think.

I see The Tump Folk Club has been mentioned.

Apparently there is some very good stuff on there this week.

Acorn4 - when I opened the Bedworth FC link you provide, my anti-virus software detected a threat and warned me off the site. Maybe my anti-virus is too sensitive but then again maybe not.

The banking saga.

Matt wanted to start banking in England, so I suggested Barclays, where I had my account in der olde daise. He is currently with Auckland Savings Bank. 20 years with them.
ASB wouldn't allow him a Visa because he isn't currently working.   Of course! He's just been capped and he's off on his travels!
Barclays sent him documents wanting authentication from his current bank. Sent from the Canary Isles!
ASB gave him documents authenticating him, but they spelled the street name wrongly. He didn't notice and despatched them.
Barclays sent them back as they had noticed the discrepancy.
ASB reissued them, but spelled his surname wrongly. He spotted that and got it fixed, sent them off.
Four weeks had gone by, consumed by snail-mail.
Departure time.
Two days after arrival, he visits the local branch of Barclays.
Two days later, he visits them again. Still no account.
Two days later, another visit. Success! He's been accepted.
"Yes, we'll post the stuff to you."
They have done. Activation card for international account. Debit card. Activation card for local account.
All sent from the Isle of Man.
All sent seperately.
All sent to his address in New Zealand.

The only possible conclusion is that 'Bankers' is Cockney rhyming slang.

Her Indoors says I've missed bits out.
Barclays rejected ASB's documentation three times, not two, once more because the signatory had not included his/her position in the bank.
and
The last documentation came to NZ again. From Northampton. 50 miles from the branch he's visiting.
