Hello, skarpi. I hope you are not in a big rush to get this done. First we have to decide which tune you want.

Like you, I searched for a MIDI of this tune, and to my surprise did not find one. So I decided to see what there is in the 1903 edition of O'Neill's Music of Ireland.

They spell it 'Siubal a run' in Irish and 'Shule aroon' in English. There is a dot over the b in 'Siubal.' There are two versions. Number 59 seems more like a solo for flute or fiddle, Number 60 seems more like a vocal piece. They are both marked 'plaintively,' meaning sad or complaining, but we all knew that.

By the way, both tunes are more complicated that the sweet tune (Here I sit on Buttermilk Hill) that many people think of when we speak of Shule Aroon.

I will send the MIDI's to Joe, and I hope that soon you will be able to click on them and hear them.

Then, if you like them, we will get to the big task of figuring out the chords.

I think a dot over the b is the same as spelling it bh - where it sounds like a v? If not, someone will correct me. e.g. placename Cobh = Cove.

And Si is the Irish and Welsh spelling of the sound Sh - which they often use to replace J, which doesn't exist in their alphabets : Sean (Shawn)= John, Sian = Jane and so on. Also compare Sean (Irish) with Jean (French).

It's a bit more complicated than that, I'm afraid! Yes - the "h" replaces the dot to which you refer. However, since O'Neill's day, there has also been a major simplification of Irish spelling and the word is now simply spelled "siúil". In effect, the "bh" was silent and was dropped.

In other situations, the "bh" sounds like either a "v", as you suggest, or a "w", depending on dialect.

stilling waiting for Joe to post the MIDI's.

Skarpi already has the tune, as he says he has been listening to it. It's just chord suggestions he is asking for.

We just need him to come back and tell us if the above suggestions help :)

Since we cannot hear the tune Skarpi has in his head, we can't work out the chords.

There may be a delay of some days before the MIDI's can be posted.

I feel that it is worthwhile to get these tunes on the web for future searchers, whether or not they are what Skarpi has in mind at present.

Did you see this thread, leeneia? Lyr Req: Suil a Ruin
That thread has at least a couple of different contributions of tune in ABC format, convertible to MIDI.

In my experience, everyone has basically the same tune in mind for this song, whichever version of the words is used.

For the record, the chords I suggested are for the Americanized "Here I sit on Butternut Hill" version, often called Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier.

The data pipelines which are used to post new MIDI's to the Mudcat are choked with willow roots at present and may remain so for some days.

We shall see if the 19th-C versions I have found ever get posted. If they do, they do. If they don't, they don't. They are different enough from 'Buttermilk Hill' to be interesting.

As for old threads: If Google says there is no MIDI of a song on the net, I accept that.

michael, the chords were posted by alison directly below the post i linked to.
And the links to related threads at the top do not appear by magic, they are put there by joe or his clones when time allows- they may even be there by now. . .
Leenia, you may believe in the infallibity of google, but there are many reasons why a google search may not bring up what you are looking for, even if it is available on the internet. How long have you got? :)

" Bíum Bíum Bambaló " shows similarities, but is surely not the same.

Connie Dover's version is the tune most of us will know. I think you'll find that my chords work with it - I got it from her.

Hope your mom's OK!

Cheers,
Michael

Well, no, those aren't the chords. Those are the melodies, which are all we have of the 19th Century versions.

If I were performing this, I would have a person sing a verse, then have an instrument do one of these, then another verse. It would add interest, I think, to show the changes over time.

I hope these can be added to the Mudcat MIDI's.

Thanks, Joe, for posting these.

Just saw this song being sung on TV the other day...last time I saw the show was late 1970's. It was a documentary called "All You Need is Love", and the song was featured in the Country Music episode...absolutely beatiful and haunting, sung by a young girl with quite a deep voice, accompanying herself mon autoharp.
I think Noreen wrote years ago that she thought it was on "Down Home", but I think this was the version.

Siubalarun60 posted by Joe, above, bears a resemblance to the tune I sing, from Elizabeth Cronin (and to the Buttermilk Hill, etc. versions).
Don't recognise the 59 one at all though.

Neither of these tunes are the one I (and I'm sure others) sing, which is the Clannad one.

Those two tunes come from the 1903 edition of 'O'Neill's Music of Ireland.' They were collected in the 19th Century from Irish musicians in Chicago.

The first version is probably an arrangement for violin or harp. At least that's how it seems to me.

It starts at 49 mins. This is the one Noreen mentioned from a while back.

===========
The MIDI's from O'Neill (upthread) don't play anymore, but if anybody's curious, they are now in the Mudcat MIDI's, which you can find in the box labelled 'Quick Links' above. The spelling to search for in the MIDI's is 'Siuil a Ruin.'
