Yeah but Alistair's far too useful, being a vet, to David. But once he takes early retirement...

As for the siblings' partners, Shulagh still has one - David has been slacking, don't you think?

They have missed out on the chance to have a disabled character in the series though.
He could have been left paralysed and there would have been many more plot possibilities.

The esteemed Archers Anarchists have already renamed Shulugh's son Damien.

I applaud the socialist symbolism that the scriptwriters have introduced with the representation of the downfall (in this case literally) of the upper classes who have positioned themselves above the proletariat. I mean, if he'd lived in a bungalow he'd probably have still been alive.

Yes but had this symbolism been taken too far he'd have already fallen off the roof on a number of previous occasions and crushed Eddie, Clarrie, Joe, Susan, Neil, Titcombe...

I think the moral for the upper classes (can't think why it hasn't already been done) is that all stately homes should have very thick wisteria growing on all four sides, stcking out at least three feet from the walls.

I feel you're trying to defend this man, topsie. Not a wise course I would have thought. Keep your distance, especially if there are any roofs or overhanging branches around. Or if you're a badger.

Ruth ought to be worried though:
Shula's husband - Dead
Lizzie's husband - Dead
Kenton - no partner - yet
David's wife - Living (at present)

....As long as it's not that despicable piano accordion version that opens the Sunday omnibus.

A letter in The Grauniad today points out that not only was David the only witness of Nigel's "accident", he was also the only witness of the "accidental death" of Clarrie's dad in 1987 at the hands of a mysterious falling tree-branch. I've long suspected that there is something of the dark side to this bloke.

Yeah, and his final groundward crunch may have been slightly delayed by dint of David hanging on briefly to the other end of that banner. Until he let go to save himself. Bastard.

I assumed most of the scream was supposed to be happening as he slid down a sloping bit of roof towards the edge.

Nigel screamed for about 3 seconds on his way down. One of Newton's equations of motion says that s = 1/2 x a x t x t where s = the height of the house, a is the acceleration due to gravity (32 ft/sec/sec) and t is the length of the scream. This makes the height of the house about 145 feet. Ambridge must be quite a place to have houses that high.......

Lynne - I think you've missed the point. It's a slow burn which will affect the plot for at least a decade. And Nigel is the third longstanding character to have died in the last year.

On Radio 4 this morning they interviewed the actor who played Nigel for 30 years.
He sounded quite upbeat and said he now has another job so I don't feel quite so bad about it. He seemed very proud of his scream - apparently people are downloading it to use as a ringtone.

Yes, I agree in a way. Had it been the horrid Shula (or even smug Dave) instead of the bumbling but agreeable Nigel things would have looked far jollier. Still, I'll have to stick with it. My wife will permit no other route through the forthcoming gloom.

I have been thinking the same as Penny S - it does seem very strange to celebrate a major anniversary by killing off a popular character and putting one of the regular actors out of work. (Or is this another of the financial cuts caused by the recession?)
I really don't fancy listening to people being miserable every evening for the next few weeks. Maybe I'll find something else to do at 7 o'clock from now on.

Well, it was just a bloke falling off a roof after all. There simply has to be a twist. I reckon that one of the two Pargetter brats overheard David challenging Nige as to whether he was a man or a mouse, when the latter had been showing signs of demurring over the impending fateful roof adventure. This will be blurted out at the post-funereal weepie time, and a shocked and bitter Lizzie will make guilt-ridden Dave's life hell for years to come as a result. In fact, she may even try to kill him in about 2017. Tractors make effective lethal weapons, apparently. That will leave the way open for herdsman Sam to renew his bid for Ruth. God, why don't these people just employ me and have done with it.

If that's so let's hope that David was sensible enough to ditch the altruism and let go of the other end of the banner instead of clinging to the forlorn hope that he could save a dangling Nigel with no more than a bump to his upper-class-twit-of-the-year bonce. On the other hand, let's hope not.

We still don't know what happpened to David - I've just heard the repeat and it definitely ended with a few more scrabbling/slipping noises. It could be Nigel landing in a well-placed yew tree (very springy) and David bowing out. After all, if we are celebrating 60 years of the 'Archers' it ought to be one of them who is sacrificed, surely.

There's a rumour going around that the death given away by Vanessa will not be that of Nige, but of the person he serendipitously landed on. Let's hope it was Shularrgh.

Whitburn was on the news this morning defending her plot, and slipped, and revealed that there would be a birth and a death - then claimed she had said potential death. Thus gave away the state of Nigel, which she had been intending to keep in a Schrodinger state until tonight.

Who thought it a good idea to "celebrate" anniversaries with deaths?

Penny

Can they resist the 'When to switch off the life support' dilemma, and some propaganda for organ donation?

They say it will have repercussions in Ambridge for years to come, so maybe they'll decide not to switch it off, thus delaying the death duties. They could add to the anguish by coming up with someone (Helen?) waiting for a transplant.

Maybe he will have landed on a ledge.

What I don't understand is why they were taking down the "Happy New Year" banner at New Year. Surely it would have made more sense to leave it up at least until the New Year bank holiday to encourage visitors to the gift shop and café.
