The album on Folkways "Nonesuch", has never been far from my record player, (remember them, folks?) and why it's had such staying power I'm not sure. Just never seems to "date". Also it "swings" like crazy. A very un-selfconscious feel to it. I know Frank spoke a little about making it in an earlier thread, but I'd love to know some more details of the session(s). How much was rehearsed?

Rick, I don't know if we are talking about the same thing, but back in the 60s there was a record label, "Nonesuch" that released some dynamite instrumentals of old songs (heavy on the Purcells and folks like that). Same outfit? I still have some of the LPs.

The record I'm referring to was called "Nonesuch" (from the tune of the same name), recorded on Folkways Records sometime in the late 50s. It featured Pete Seeger and Frank Hamilton playing a lot of instrumental tunes on a myriad of instruments. Two absolutely crazed vocals (My Home's across the Smokey Mountains, and the best version of "Battle of New Orleans" extant) are included. As a listening record it was (and is) a lot of fun. As a learning tool, it was invaluable to me.

Well, that's the second time I've been wrong. The first was in 1941.

The Nonesuch label was the one that put out the superb album titled The Real Bahamas, whereon we all heard the glorious "I Bid You Goodnight" for the first time. Joseph Spence and the Pindar Family were the artists. I think the same recording is now available as a CD from Rounder, but with a different title. Can we get Wally at Camsco to confirm that?

Speaking of great recordings by Frank Hamilton, though, I saw a notive on the FOLKDJ-L listserv of his new CD being ready for shipment to DJs around the country. I hope a few of those "folk" DJs will depart from their usual omphaloscopic musical programming long enough to play something as "rooted" as Frank's music.

But let's get Frank, himself, to tell us about his new release. Are you out there now, Frank?

Another job for the ubiquitous Joe Offer! (Don't know what I'd do without him.) After "The Real Bahamas," please, Joe. Next week I'll learn to proof-read, I promise. You must get real tired of repairing my posts.
Minor dyslexia, Sandy. You put <i/> in a futile attempt to close those italics.

Sandy, I've still got that Real Bahamas album, and you're right, it's a gem. Last time I was in the Portland record store(Music Millenium), I found a couple dusty old Joseph Spence/Pindar Family tapes, and they were wonderful, too. (that's Brother Spense to you, guys). Sure is amazing how we WASPS straightened and tidied up "And I Bid You Goodnight".
Blessings,
Barbara

The old 'Nonesuch' label still releases some great music. They have re-released "The Real Bahamas" on a CD which actually contians a Volume 2 of the "Real Bahamas" (which I didn't even know existed.) They've cleaned up the sound a bit, but this is still one incredible musical experience.

Nonesuch also has the early Hamza El Din release "the Water Wheel", among others.

I tried to get to their web site, but all I found was the Warner Bros. Classical site (parent company).

That old catalog had some real gems, though.

Sure is, Barbara. On the other hand, we've had to collect words from a number of sources (including your friend Ray Frank and the lovely Animaterra) in order to put together a version we could sing. I had a hellova time trying to figure out the words from the original recording.

Did Ray ever tell you that he backed us once in a concert at the YMHA in New York? Caroline and I decided to avoid doing any of the old Christian gospel stuff at a Jewish establishment. When we asked Ray to lead a song for the crowd, he chose "I Bid You Goodnight," with a goodly chunk of Christian words. It was great, but then, Ray was Jewish and didn't feel at all constrained, as we did.

I know what you mean, Sandy. I once sang it for a young Jewish woman as an example of a song that consoles people about death and dying. When I got to "Lay your head upon your Savior's breast/For I love you, but Jesus loves you the best...", she burst into tears and said, "But that isn't for ME!"
And the words! "Sing A for the Ark, that wunnerful boat.argle bargle mumble, wouldn't stay afloat." Even if you were fluent in Bahamian accents, the Pindars are singing on TOP of Bro' Spense, and I dunno about yours, but my recording's monaural.... Now there's a word the kids won't know.
Blessings,
BArbara

Hi Sandy....

Yes, I'm here. Thanks Rick. Pete and I had a great time with it. It was a jam session, really. It was not intended to be too well rehearsed. This was the first time Pete recorded Living In The Country (on the record) Singing In The Country. Working with Pete is always a great joy. He is one of the most generous people I know. We were going for spontaneity. We wouldn't be able to reproduce what we put down on that tape. We tried at one of Pete's concerts in Symphony Hall in Boston but it came out different. Anyway, thanks again for your nice words, Rick.

I haven't been in the studio solo for about thirty years, Sandy. Last time was a Folkways album that I didn't really think I did too well. Had a cold that day. In those days, you did an album in one day. This new CD is about my love affair with traditional American folk music. If you're interested, you can find out more about it by going to Indian Trail Studios (click). All I really can tell you is that I'm pleased with it. Roger McGuinn helped me out on one cut. It wouldn't have been possible without my wife, Mary's help. I tried to make it honest, because that's what folk music is to me. I picked songs that I love, the traditional American folk songs have withstood the test of time. Some have been recorded before but there are those that haven't been done very often. My mission was and is to bring forth those wonderful true folk songs that people may not know. I hope y'all think I did them justice.

Apparently the list won't take websites so if you go to Alta Vista and look up ITR Studios (Indian Trail Studios) you'll find it.

Thanks,

Frank

I figured Joe was here to help! I clicked on the blue-clicky-thingy before I reached that added message from Joe, and, sure 'nuff, there was Frank's countenance, smiling as usual. I read the PR post to the FOLKDJ list, Frank, and if I can find it, I'll try to post it here on the 'Cat in a thread of it's own. Very nicely written, it was. If I can't find it, maybe you can get the PR person who wrote it to send it to me again and I'll transfer it my own self. You have my address for direct E-pistles, I know.

Stay well, lad.

Sandy

Hi, Joe, Thanks for the information. Tried to click on blue clicky but wasn't able to. Don't know why.

Thanks Sandy,

Let's stay in touch. Maybe I can try this way:
