Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST,mg Date: 22 Jan 11 - 07:56 PM I think they are absolutely wonderful and I am very sorry to hear that one has died..was that recent? But I also feel that food is very very important..especially when so many don't have enough or the right kind...and saying what we eat is very important...and will become more prevalent as we realize what is driving diabetes and obesity etc..the two issues are separate issues...people writing down here is not taking anything away from something else...and hopefully people will check them out but for now there is interest in this very primal topic. mg P.S. I went to McDonald's yesterday and had 2 sausage mcmuffins with half the buns tossed (should have been all buns tossed actually) and eggs and diet coke and it was exactly what my body needed, minus any preservatives, antibiotics, pesticides, etc. I do very well on saturated fat and can not do carbs at all and some of the breakfasts mentioned above would lay me out flat, and cause me to gain even more weight. mg |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 22 Jan 11 - 08:23 PM One quick favorite is to take a slice of bread, cut out the middle (a knife, or you can use those fried egg container shapes), insert an egg, and fry in a pan. This can also be done in the microwave if wanted - you just have to modify the cooking technique slightly to adjust to the microwave. I like to use those 2 plate sandwich toasters, so you can also toast the cutout. You can also drop this on top of the egg in the hole. A recent modification is to place a second slice of bread and place some cheese on it, then slide the egged bread piece when solid on top, to glue it together. You can also add things like thin tomato slices, or spreading some other flavoring, before sprinkling the shredded cheese, or adding sliced cheese. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 22 Jan 11 - 08:23 PM I had a listen to Hal an Tow, and they were pleasant enough on the clips that I listened to, but I'd have to hear a lot more to pass comment. Now I do know, and have opinions on, what I have for breakfast. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: maeve Date: 22 Jan 11 - 08:24 PM You are all cordially invited to visit the Hal An Tow thread as you enjoy your favorite breakfast: Lovely music, good folks. Maeve |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: gnu Date: 22 Jan 11 - 10:25 PM Be assured, Hal an Tow are amazing. The videos do NOT do them justice. Just read Kendall's posts. When he says they are good, they are GOOD. The lad knows a thing or two about music. I even heard someone say Bernie is the best guitarist he ever saw. And that was a musician of note. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST,kendall Date: 23 Jan 11 - 08:38 AM mg, I agree that food is important, but this is a folk music site and it doesn't come close to the music when it is done so well, and ignored by people who want to talk about themselves rather than listen to good music. It's the ratio of posts that irritate me. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: LilyFestre Date: 23 Jan 11 - 12:54 PM What did I listen to this morning? My son, 10 months old, babbling away. What did I have for breakfast? 2 fresh eggs, 1 slice of homemade whole wheat toast with butter, a glass of skim milk and a bowl of pears that we canned this fall. YUM. Best part? My husband made breakfast this morning, all of it...rght down to the homemade bread! Michelle |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Charmion Date: 23 Jan 11 - 01:00 PM WRT Kendal's point: Some threads you read, follow the link and take in the message. The Hal An Tow thread is one of those: I followed the link to YouTube and watched several of the videos; I will think about what I heard, but have nothing to say because I did not know the musicians. Other threads you glance at and post to, then move on -- easy peasy. A whole different kind of interaction, much more casual and, it must be admitted, usually much less significant. Sunday breakfast is always good. Today we had a nice cheese omelette with green onions, croissants from the French bakery on Murray Street, and three espressos each. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: SINSULL Date: 23 Jan 11 - 01:04 PM One egg with cheese on a toasted English muffin with cranberry juice and coffee. Janie, I buy my favoite coffee on sale (3 bags for $10. It usually sells for $6.99/bag) and freeze it. Always have the good stuff in stock. Of course, I prefer coffee to chocolate so I have my priorities right. Mary |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Maryrrf Date: 23 Jan 11 - 01:06 PM This morning, the usual copious amount of strong coffee with milk, and a piece of French toast made with homemade whole wheat bread, followed by an apple a little later on. I tend to agree with Charmion, this kind of thread is akin to 'small talk' that one might engage in with one's coworkers. Requires little thought, it's amusing and plus I admit I love getting ideas about food. |

We all enjoyed brunch, however, and I'll do it again next week! |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Beer Date: 23 Jan 11 - 09:21 PM Strangest meal of the day. You must eat your corn flakes, your porridge, your toast, your bran and so on. I eat what I want. Most of the time it is bacon and eggs or Newfoundland steak, give me a can of beans and throw in a few hot dogs. But my favorite is a good bowl of stew, or barley soup. Trout is always a favorite when one can buy it or catch one. If I was back home (the maritimes.) I would have a clam omelet. I know, I know a lot of what i eat is not good for me but I like breakfast the way I want it and not by who says what I should eat. Porridge is probably one of the best things for you. Personally I can't look at the stuff. I had it 7 days a week when there was nothing else and that is probably the reason. But if you like it, than why not eat it for lunch or supper. Have you ever heard of anyone doing so? If I like my stew in the morning than why not have it. When my wife rolls her eyes at my breakfast plate of goodies, I just shrug my shoulders with a smile. ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 24 Jan 11 - 05:12 AM Beer, it's not such a strange idea - the traditional breakfast at a large country house would include a choice of kedgeree, kippers, chops, devilled kidneys and many more substantial dishes. Yes, I have eaten porridge at other times of day, and 'breakfast' cereals make a nice snack before bed. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 24 Jan 11 - 05:22 AM I've never been in the habit of having breakfast every morning although it is supposed to be the most important meal of the day but I can't face it that early in the morning. Most days I wait until I get into work and have a banana with yoghurt and a cereal bar. But when I can force myself to have something especially on a cold day, it is 3 Weetabix with hot milk all mushed up like baby food. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Backwoodsman Date: 24 Jan 11 - 06:56 AM "But if you like it, than why not eat it for lunch or supper. Have you ever heard of anyone doing so?" Errrrmmm, well me, actually. Been known to have porridge for lunch and supper, and for tea as well (But not all on the same day!). And as an in-between meals snack, very occasionally. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Beer Date: 24 Jan 11 - 08:56 AM Good for you Backwoodsman. I don't know why but your mudcat name sort of fits having porridge besides just at breakfast. This morning I'm having a fiddle-head omelet. Picked some last fall with 999 and it is time to go to the deep freeze and dig them out. ad |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 24 Jan 11 - 10:15 AM I know it hasn't got to be any particular time of day, but I am guessing that the thread is asking what get's us going for the day. Replies clean please! |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Backwoodsman Date: 24 Jan 11 - 10:49 AM Beer, I changed my Mudcat name to Backwoodsman because the term was used about me as an attempted insult by one of our, shall we say, psychologically- (or perhaps psychiatrically-) challenged members. Otherwise it says nothing about me at all. By the bye, what's a fiddle-head omelette? Omelette I understand, but 'fiddle-head omelette' sounds like something the guy might eat before climbing on to the roof to play his banjo. :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Beer Date: 24 Jan 11 - 11:29 AM There are many variations to this recipe but this is a very good one. You can also see by the photo why it is called a fiddle head. Looks much like the end piece of a violin. Actually if you google fiddle head and go to images you will get a much better view of the fern head. ad. http://100mile.foodtv.ca/recipe/fiddlehead-omelette |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: LilyFestre Date: 24 Jan 11 - 11:38 AM Fiddleheads? YUM!!! Breakfast (for me) this morning was Cheerios, skim milk, a banana and 2 pieces of lowfat string cheese. Michelle |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Bill D Date: 24 Jan 11 - 02:57 PM I can do good cereal & milk...or oatmeal...for breakfast... or even bacon, sausage, hash browns, toast...etc...when I am organized or traveling, but 95% of the time anymore it's a peanut butter sandwich on really good bread, with honey or good jam, with OJ and coffee. It could be worse...as I read above. |

Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 24 Jan 11 - 04:20 PM "I changed my Mudcat name to Backwoodsman because the term was used about me as an attempted insult" Same reason (long story) as why The Fooles Troupe got started ... truly we often owe a lot of thanks to those who think they are better than us and attempt to put us down ... :-) This morning - leftovers, last night rice, with diced tomatoes, basil, garlic, ginger (tablespoon of each bottled) microwaved. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 24 Jan 11 - 05:30 PM As said above, I like porridge with sugar (or, if empty, raspberry jam), but I've heard of salt being added...anyone? |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 24 Jan 11 - 05:59 PM Good porridge only needs milk (or cream) and a little salt while cooking. If you need sugar or jam to drown the taste ... |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 24 Jan 11 - 06:22 PM The only thing I would change in Dave MacKenzie's post would be to swap over the milk and cream (milk only if cream is unavailable). If the person who made the porridge insisted on not adding any salt I would then sprinkle some on with the cream. |
Subject: RE: BS: What did you have for breakfast? From: Joe_F Date: 24 Jan 11 - 08:57 PM Jewish French Toast Break eggs into a small bowl. Stir in enough milk to make the mixture smooth. Brown in a little olive oil & butter a chopped small onion. Add a sliced mushroom or two. Add something savory (such as sliced salami or kipper). Break a matzoh in coarse pieces into the egg-milk mixture. Pour it over the ingredients in the frying pan. Cover with a plate. When the plate gets too hot to touch, remove it, discard the condensed water on it, cut the contents of the pan in quarters with a spatula, and turn them over. Season with salt & pepper; that takes enough time to finish the other side. Serve on the heated plate. |

I've been insulted by experts, Foolestroupe. Little do they know I've got a hide like a rhino - insults just bounce harmlessly off it (unless they're made face-to-face, then I've found that a carefully-served knuckle-sandwich usually puts a stop to them) :-) |
