Since I have a reasonable regard for my personal wellbeing, I generally hunt 'shrooms in the grocery store. It isn't the anaphylactic shock so much as it is the big green and yellow spots on my handsome corpse...

Bobart - Are you talking about the shrooms that grow in cowpies and have similar effects as magic pixie dust?

"$55 a pound in the grocery stores that sell them..."

Ahhhhh... the stores on the corner?

Never did shrooms. Seen my buddies do em. I recall them all laughing like crazy in a dark room until I turned on the lights. They stopped and were silent. I flipped the switch and the laughing started back up.

It was fun flipping the switch a few times. Until one of them said, "The ceiling is dripping." I went back to the pub. Shrooms just seem to far out for me.

Bobert-- I'm just learning to forage edible mushrooms (not remotely interested in the "funny" kind, just gourmet edibles I can sell and eat myself). I realize conditions are different between Maine and your neck of the woods, but could you tell me in what conditions you generally find morels? Here, I've heard people say to look around old apple trees or in recently-burned areas.

Thanks,

--Cuilionn

P.S. I do know about false morels-- Don't worry, I won't eat anything unless I check with an expert or two and some reliable guidebooks first.

Spaw, that kambucaca stuff is not really a mushroom. It's pond slime.

Bobert said they were morels. I've never had any morels. People who know where they are don't tend to share them. I know I've seen them for sale in the last couple of years, so maybe I can get me some store-bought morels.

Morels:

Okay, you find them in early spring in hilly (higher latitudes, mountainous) around areas where poplars grow and when the poplar leaves have opened to the size of a "squirrel's ear" (Mr. Clifford wisdom)... The best way to find um is to go two days after rain... And rather than walk around lookin' for them just sit down in one spot and study our 30 feet in all directions... They will look like, ahhhh, how to say this??? Okay, they will look like small erections... Most won't be over 4 inches but that's what they will look like... The reason you sit in one place is because it gives you an opportunity to be lower as well as an opportunity to find several before getting up to cut them... Never pull them out unless you have an onion bag to carry them in so the spores will fall back to the ground to reseed them... I cut mine with sizzors which leaves the root...

There ya'll go... That's more than I should have told ya'll about "mergals" 'cause we hillbillies go a code when it comes to "shrooms"...

Little review... Poplars in early leafing... Hilly wooded countryside or mountains... Stay low... Work slow... Erections...

Lordy be, Melissa...

That picture alone was worth an erection over... LOL...

That ain't the way you find them in the mountains... Yeah, that's what they look like but you ain't gonna find that many that close together...

Wish you could...

Okay, maybe somewhere that ain't been "picked", maybe... 'round the Blue Ridge Mountains there ain't no places that ain't been picked... Next week there will be hundreds of cars on every mountain road parked with peoppe climbing them hills lookin' for 'shrooms... It's like a way of life... Some folms move away from here an' then come 'shroom season" they're back....

Makes it tough to find new places....

Remember... They grow under poplar trees....

Hi, Bobert. I haven't hunted for them myself, but I have a friend who grew up in a small town in Iowa, and everybody there went 'shrooming.' It was she that taught me the word.

I wish I could be in a leafy wood right now, instead of thinking about the taxes. Good luck in your search.

Some years ago my buddies and I had a lobster boil with the added benefit of "magic" shrooms. I became convinced over the course of the day that the lobsters were in fact Invaders From Another Galaxy and had to be consumed to ensure the safety of Earth. I'm still not sure if I was entirely wrong.

Hmm..the picture didn't affect me quite the same way, Bobert!

Even on really good years, I haven't seen them growing in clusters like that..I'm not so sure I believe it would work to throw a batch of spawn (is that the word they used on that site? We call the seed things 'spores'..whether that's the correct name or not) on a pile of dirt/leaves/whatever is laying around and grow a crop of mushrooms in the front yard.
If it was that easy to do, it seems like folks would have been doing it for years so they could have a feast without spending the evening picking ticks.

They do sometimes grow where you throw the washing/cutting water (which is why it should be thrown outside..just in case) but not consistently enough to count on.

We find them around elms.

A slight detour - today I saw purple carrots in Coles Supermarket (Aust) They were labeled as 'Dutch Carrots' - my past research showed that the orange variety as a modern (about 1605) discovery.

I had been looking for such other varieties since the 80s.

Seems to me that folks should be careful of other folks who go hunting erections in poplar forests! Seems to me that maybe they're suffering from loose morels.

;0)

(well, someone had to say it.)

Only tried it twice before the'legal' highs were banned here in the UK and I didn't find that too bad but nothing since. 'Shrooms' are quite commonplace on the Isle of Wight about September October, being hippies and all, and I have seen the one that you ferment on tea although I chickened out trying it because of the horrible acidic smell. It is suppose to cure everything from arthritis to migraine according to the instructions and I think the idea was that you were supposed to pass on the 'new' 'shroom' to a friend.

Yeah, SA, but we're not talking about stinkhorns here. Stinkhorns are not the delicious mushrooms morels are and should be avoided.

P.S. Please don't try this at home, kids. Mushroom hunting should be done only under the supervision of an extremely knowledgeable guide until such time as one becomes that extremely knowledgeable guide. For instance, there is a mushroom that looks somewhat like a morel that one would never, never want to eat.

That advice goes for everyone so ya'll just stay the heck off my mountain... lol...

Loved the pun, Lizzie... Actually, I should have never used the word "erection" but it seemed so much more acceptable than "hard on"...

Actually, Part B... I should have never stirred up all this interest 'cause it will mean a couple of ya'lls will probably go out and become "shroomers" now that we got yer curiosity up...

BTW, if any of ya do go out for the first time and find some "mergals" then PM me what to do next with them 'cuase they will have little black ant's in 'um and I know the tricks in getting the wild grown "mergals" clean and cooked up...

How does the taste/texture compare with everyday carrots?

Bobert,
Do your mushrooms always have little black ants? I don't think ours do! We have occasional tiny beetle-things instead.

"Loose morels..." HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Thanks for the mushroom-finding, uh... "pointers."

I forage Black Trumpets and Hen-of-the-Woods, (a.k.a. Maitake), mostly. I know how to find those varieties and how to harvest them safely and sustainably. I've found a few chanterelles as well. Reishi and oyster mushrooms also grow reliably in our woods, and I have some logs inoculated with plug spawn that will hopefully bear the following varieties for us this year: Shiitake, Maitake, Pearl Oyster and Chicken-of-the-Woods.

I know Jeri.....Karen and I actually tried it ourselves for awhile about 15 years ago. They were often called "Friendship Mushrooms" because you were supposed to give them away to friends as starters so they could enjoy it as well with all the healthful benefits.

First, we never noticed any healthful benefits. Second, although the "tea" was very, uh, different, much like apple juice and vinegar together, it wasn't on the top of our hit parade. Third, the fuckin' things reproduced at such an alarming rate that NOBODY would ever have enough friends to take them.......and most of our friends didn't want one anyway..........especially after tasting the "tea."

When I found out Joe's quackopractor, er, uh, chiropractor wife had him on the sauce, I started razzing him every chance I got! And you know me, the more repetitious and aggravating it becomes the more I do it. Like I'd bet there are at least a dozen or more people who wish I'd drop the cheeseburger bit on the Cuba thread and the other threads it has wandered to...........................I think the last one I did that had people totally pissed was the "Anne Frank Drum" thing.........

I don't know about them "Friendship" mushrooms but I do remember them silly-slobin' one from the 60's... Mess you the **** up.... I went over to some friends and they had cooked them up in some spaghetti sauce and all I remember was walkin' around the streets of Richmond all night long and stuff being extremely funny... Reckon to folks seein' me I was the one who was "extremely funny"...

As for the ants???

Well, if you clean 'um the way I do you'll find that they do indeed have ants in 'um...

Heres' how to clean 'um": First, cut them in half longwise... Second, put them in a bowl of water with salt in it it... Third, put the bowl in the refrigerator for a couple of hours.... Then take 'um out and pat them dry, put 'um in plastic bag and they'll be good for several days...

Don't leave them in the water all night... That ruins 'um... Makes 'um mushy... Two hours, tops... BTW, check out that water and you'll see the dead ants... Ants love "mergals... So do deer... Gotta beat the deer to the "shrooms"...

There ya'll have everything but how I cooks 'um...

nope, we don't have ants in ours. It must be a locational thing or something. What we have are very little black beetles that wash out.

Do you have the little gray ones just before the big yellow ones start popping out, Bobert?

I am strangely interested in hearing about those carrots and hope you'll come back with a report after you've eaten one.

A friend of mine dries them because he says it's got a stronger effect and has brewed 'shroom' wine too but I wasn't brave enough to try and not sure enough about the different types to go picking them. Even if I had a book telling me I wouldn't be confident enough to try.
