Did ya see Cam Newton yesterday? Solid running and throwing. lots of poise. tied the rookie record for yards in a game, but still some room to improve. all with weak protection from the O-Line. Like I said, fun to watch!

Here's my very belated reply to Gnu's post of 28 July (about the Saints losing Reggie Bush to the Dolphins):

Coach Payton and the Saints would have been glad to keep Reggie at a reasonable salary for a part-time player. Miami offered him more, so good for him.

Not mentioned in the Miami newspaper article:

The Saints quickly acquired former San Diego free-agent Darren Sproles to play the role that Reggie had been performing: 3rd-down pass-catching back and kick returner. Sproles' numbers in every pertinent category have been markedly better than Bush's over the past few years, and his asking price was reasonable. (It might also be noted that the oft-injured Reggie missed almost exactly half of all regular-season and playoff games during his time in New Orleans, and the Saints had a better won-loss record without him than with him.)

The Sproles signing may not yet have happened when that Miami news article was written, but the Saints HAD already drafted and signed former Heisman winner Mark Ingram, who will be in the mix at RB along with Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory. It's early yet, but he looks VERY good. Why wasn't he mentioned?

Saints should bounce back and go deep into the playoffs again, two years after winning the Super Bowl. They had 28 unresitricted free agents that they might have lost (more than any other team), but they managed to keep just about everyone they wanted to keep. The sole exception was center Jonathan Goodwin, and they immediately signed former Chicago Bear and future Hall-of-Famer Olin Kreutz (sp?) to play that position for a year or two (while youngster Matt Tennant out of Boston College is allowed to develop).

There will be many more "new" starters this year than last, but not because the team lost anyone they wanted; the new faces will be young guys coming into their own, and/or new free-agant signees considerably BIGGER than the guys they're replacing (especially on the defensive front).

The national media are saying nothing about the Saints. I'm tempted to say "Good!," but I doubt that my guys are going to sneak up and take any of their opponents unaware. The coaches around the league know who should be taken seriously, even if the media talking-heads don't...

I watched some clips of Newton, I think he throws better than Vick at that age. He runs and throws very well. Unlike Vick, he can scramble in either direction and throw well.

I think he's gonna be fun to watch.

Well, seein' as I now live outside of Charlotte all we get is Panthers news and so, yeah, I guess I'll make them my 2nd favorite team behind my beloved Washington Redskins... Had to buy a football package from Dreck-TV so I can see my Redskins but I can read all about them on line at WashingtonPost.com...

I did watch the Panthers preseason game and they looked very good on both sides of t6he ball... Newton throws hard but it remains to be seen just how accurate he will be... Clauson, at least at this point, is more accurate...

I think the Pats are looking very strong so far this year. The Packers too considering the number of non-superbowl quality players coming back from injury.

The Cowboys have a lot of talent. But the coaching is iffy and I haven't seen the heart of a champion in Romo, yet.

Will Vick have the year he had last year? That offense sure has the talent!

Steelers are strong, Jets are strong.

It is shaping up to be an interesting year.

How about the Eagles offensive talent against the Jets defense in the Superbowl? Naw.... too much green!

INDIANAPOLIS - Colts coach Jim Caldwell does not expect Peyton Manning to practice at the start of training camp.

The coaches have not had a chance to see where Manning is more than two months after having neck surgery.

Caldwell says that Manning is "not ready right now" and that the team will "turn him loose" when he is ready to play. Manning also is trying to negotiate a new long-term contract, which should help Indy re-sign some of its own free agents.

The Colts report to training camp Sunday at Anderson University. Practice begins Monday.

Yeah, but we're talkin about Belichick. I think chances are pretty good these guys will perform well. AND, I'd go so far as to say Ochocinco may be more of a possible problem than Haynesworth. Haynesworth knows he has to perform or he's gonna lose a LOT of money. I'll bet he loses some weight real fast and becomes a great pass rusher. I think Belichick will muzzle Ochocinco without prejudice if he mouths off in the locker room or anywhere else.

Veteran WR Smith will remain with Panthers

After an offseason full of speculation of whether he would stay or go, WR Steve Smith will remain with the Carolina Panthers, reports NFL Network's Michael Lombardi.

According to Lombardi, Smith met with Panthers GM Marty Hurney on Wednesday night and will report to training camp on Friday. Smith, who has two years remaining on his contract, was tight-lipped throughout the offseason amid reports he had requested a trade and wanted out of Carolina.

Smith, a four-time Pro Bowler and the Panthers' all-time leading receiver, had attended some player-organized workouts during the offseason.

MIAMI - Nine years later, the Miami Dolphins have again traded for a New Orleans Saints running back who won the Heisman Trophy.

This time it's Reggie Bush.

The Dolphins finalized a trade for Bush on Thursday by negotiating a new two-year contract for nearly US$10 million with him, a person familiar with the talks said. The person confirmed the agreement to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the teams had yet to announce the deal.

It wasn't known what the Saints would receive in the trade.

Miami acquired former Heisman winner Ricky Williams from the Saints in 2002, with mixed results. He won an NFL rushing title with the Dolphins, but they haven't won a playoff game since that trade.

Bush was due about $11.8 million this season, the final year of his Saints contract. It would have been difficult for them to justify paying that given their salary cap constraints.

Trade talks with Miami began late Wednesday. Bush's agent, Joel Segal, worked with Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland until after 2 a.m. Thursday on the terms of a new contract.

Later in the morning Bush agreed to the deal and was en route to Miami.

The Dolphins sought a running back to pair with second-round draft choice Daniel Thomas. Last year's leading rushers, Williams and Ronnie Brown, are free agents.

The Dolphins remain in the market to acquire a quarterback to compete with Chad Henne for the starting job, and they've reportedly talked with the Denver Broncos about acquiring Kyle Orton.

While Bush has been paid handsomely since signing his six-year rookie contract worth up to $62 million, his pro career has never reached the heights he and many fans expected when he was selected second overall in the 2006 draft.

Bush has had his share of highlight-reel touchdowns on punt returns, receptions and runs, but has never been to a Pro Bowl or even rushed for as much as 600 yards in a season.

Last season he missed eight games, and during the other eight games was used as a role player, with only 36 carries for 150 yards and just 34 receptions for 208 yards.

But Miami wanted to get faster on offence. Bush upgrades a team that ranked third-worst in the NFL last year in scoring, rushing touchdowns, yards per carry and rushes of 10 yards or more.

The Heisman Trust no longer recognizes Bush as the winner of its award. Bush relinquished his title to it in 2010 after an NCAA investigation concluded the former Southern California star and his family accepted improper benefits from would-be sports agents while Bush was still playing for USC.

The same probe led the Bowl Championship Series to vacate the Trojans' 2004 BCS national title.

Soon after the Saints made a trade for a second first-round pick in April's NFL draft to take Alabama Heisman winner Mark Ingram, Bush wrote: "It's been fun New Orleans," on his Twitter site. Bush later said he regretted that comment and hoped to find a way to stay with New Orleans.

Saints coach Sean Payton had consistently said there remained a place in his wide-open offence for Bush. But after a salary cap of around $120 million was included in Monday's labour agreement that ended the lockout, it became apparent New Orleans would have trouble paying Bush what he wanted while addressing other needs.

Before the lockout, the Saints re-signed running back Pierre Thomas to a four-year, $12-million extension. New Orleans also is high on Chris Ivory, who made the squad as an undrafted rookie last season. He filled in while both Bush and Thomas were hurt, and wound up leading the club in yards rushing with 716 yards and TDs rushing with five. It all made for a crowded backfield.

In his five-year pro career, Bush has rushed 524 times for 2,090 yards — an average of 4.0 yards per carry — and 17 touchdowns. He also has 294 receptions for 2,142 yards and 12 TDs. He also has four career TDs on punt returns.

The next week or so is going to be CRAZY for the coaches and executives who have to assemble each team's roster. Rookie signings, player trades, and the whole rigamarole of free agents and teams shopping for each other, which usually extends over five months, will now have to be completed within about five DAYS.

TV/media coverage promises to be completely overboard; it's already more than excessive now, before any activity has begun, just going over and over every little detail of the process of coming to an agreement. Once players start signing and moving around, there won't be enough hours in the day for the so-called expert talking heads to expound on the mega-hectic goings-on...

The wide receiver who is hoping to restart his NFL career this upcoming season spoke with children from the Urban League of Broward County on Thursday, telling them about the nightclub shooting that sent him to prison and how he "took everything away" from himself in that one decision.

Burress told the children, "Every decision you make has consequences."

Burress was released from prison last month, after serving nearly two years. He pleaded guilty in August 2009 to attempted criminal possession of a weapon, the charge stemming from his bringing a gun into a Manhattan nightclub and accidentally shooting himself in the thigh.

Burress last appeared in an NFL game Nov. 23, 2008, and turns 34 next month.

Attempted? Hahahahaha. The dumb fuck shot himself with it! Was the "attempted" a reduction in sentencing? Of course it really has no bearing on this thread but it did stike me funny. Wouldn't shooting yourself with an illegal weapon be MORE than an "attempt".

NEW YORK, N.Y. - A rookie wage scale and free agency for veterans appear to be the biggest stumbling blocks to ending the NFL lockout.

Several sources requesting anonymity tell The Associated Press such key issues as splitting total revenues — the major reason for the dispute — the salary cap, fewer off-season workouts and the length of a new collective bargaining agreement are close to being completed.

Owners and players are preparing to meet again this week after two days of long negotiations last week. The sticky topics include limits on rookie salaries and signing bonuses. Another is the number of transition tags for free agents, with right of first refusal.

With training camps scheduled to open in less than two weeks for some teams, time is growing short to reach an agreement to end the nearly four-month lockout without a disruption to the preseason. With court-appointed mediator Arthur Boylan on vacation this week, the two sides plan to negotiate in New York, where last Friday talks were slowed by differences over the rookie wage scale and guidelines for unrestricted free agents.

NFL owners have long sought to restrict the huge bonuses and salaries paid to unproven rookies, particularly those selected high in the draft. Quarterback Sam Bradford, the 2010 top overall pick by St. Louis, signed a six-year, US$78-million contract that included a record $50 million in guaranteed money.

The NFLPA insists money diverted from the rookies go to veteran players; some also would go for retired players' benefits. The main disagreement right now is how deep into the first round the rookie wage scale would apply, perhaps eight picks, perhaps twice that many. Some owners also are seeking longer contracts for rookies.

In addition, the owners are pushing for more restrictions in free agency, which the players "vehemently oppose," one of the sources said.

"Maybe for one year there might be an extended right of first refusal as a compromise," the source said.

Would either side hold up a deal over that, especially with the possibility of lost exhibition games no longer remote? NFL revenues would be reduced by upward of $60 million for one weekend of cancelled preseason games. The first full weekend of exhibition play is Aug. 11-15; the Hall of Fame game between the Chicago Bears and St. Louis Rams is Aug. 7 in Canton, Ohio.

Who pays how much to a so-called "legacy fund" to help retired players has become somewhat contentious. Originally, the funding was to be 50-50 between the owners and the players. There has been no agreement yet on that breakdown.

Whenever a deal is struck, it will be anywhere from six-to-10 years. It also will include mechanisms for ending the CBA early, as happened with the 2006 agreement that the owners opted out of in 2008, leading to no salary cap in 2010 and, ultimately, to the lockout.

A topic on which there remains little disagreement is the salary cap. Some owners are not thrilled with a salary floor that requires teams spend up to 90 per cent of the cap in cash on players' salaries each year, but that is not expected to be a significant hurdle.

Players would receive around 48 per cent of all league revenues, which reached $9.3 billion last year, and the owners have dropped their demand for money off the top before splitting income with the players. There still will be some stadium credits for teams that recently financed new homes or are planning to do so.

An 18-game regular season still is favoured by the owners, but has been set aside for now.

Reducing off-season workouts and minicamps, and the parameters for drug testing are close to being resolved and not seen as major roadblocks.

Boylan has ordered the two sides to meet before him in Minneapolis on July 19. He also made it clear both sides should continue their own sessions in the interim "in an effort to define and narrow the differences between their respective settlement positions."

He also ordered lawyers from both sides to be ready to meet with him on the evening of July 18 for an "in-person agenda-setting session" that presumably would set the stage for productive talks the following day.

The owners have a labour meeting scheduled for July 21 in Atlanta.
