I hear ya, John. I think most of us reserve such shenanigans for b-da threads.:-)

As far as I can remember, Firefox has recognised marquee for years, as it is the only browser I use consistently.

Noreen -

I suspected that all browsers probably would display marquee by now.

When the HTML 2 standard was the main one in use, only IE displayed it. The current usage is at least at HTML 6, even though HTML 6 has been "distributed for review" for a couple of years, and won't actually be a standard for at least another couple of years according to "the committee."

I was going to ask if it is possible to send a travelling colourful "Happy Birthday" in an ordinary email, but it sounds as if I might be sending my loved ones "a page full of blinking, scrolling, moving, squiggling TRASH". Ah well . . .

[and I had never even heard of "Blink"]

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: BS: Old thread and no personal page

When originally introduced, Marquee worked only in IE and fakelore contends that it was introduced as an alternate to "Blink" that worked in every browser except IE.

Some suggested always using both blink and marquee for the same text/object so that all the users would see one or the other, relying on the specification that html interpreters should "fail gracefully by ignoring anything the browser doesn't understand."

("Graceful failure," as it actually happens, is somewhat as described by comments his wife once made about former President Ford.)

I haven't seen any definitive update, but both Blink and Marquee are among the "deprecated" html techniques that really should NOT BE USED without extreme caution. Recognition for both may, or may not, have been incorporated in most browsers by now. "Practicing" here is fairly harmless, but you may encounter objections if you try using it elsewhere.

There are several html codings that produce results only for browsers of specific configuration or that produce different results depending on which browser the person reading the page is using. If you don't know what your audience will see, it might be best to use another method over which you have actual control, although it's hard to find anything more annoying (or even as annoying as a page full of blinking, scrolling, moving, squiggling TRASH.

Use with restraint in regular posting - PLEASE!

John

Michael, sorry to be obtuse. I should have also mentioned I use IE, and a different browser probably means different keystrokes to get to "View Source" command. If you don't use IE and aren't familiar with "View Source", go to your browser's help with that command.

What I did:
While I was on this page, I right-clicked (my mouse has regular right-handed set-up). When I right-click, a selection list pops up. About halfway down that list is option to "View Source", and I clicked on it (normal click).

That caused a new window to open that showed line numbers down the left-hand side, scrollbar down the right. Otherwise it was blank. So I scrolled down, scrolled way, way down until text etc. appeared, scrolled further down through the apparent gobbledy gook, which in fact is text plus all the html tags from the web page. Once I got pretty far down the page--I could tell by the indicator on the scroll bar--I started looking for "katlaughing" since it was her post I wanted to read. Actually it would have been faster to hit ctrl-F (which is the Find function) and type in her name, but it was the wee hours of the morning, not my best thinking time.

Once I found her name, I kept reading and found html tags for colours interspersed with HAPPY BIRTHDAY text. This happened to be line #2947.

Reading her post with all the html tags it became pretty apparent by process of elimination what made the text run (tag "marquee").

View Source can be done on any web page to see what code was used to make it look and behave the way it does. BTW I'm not a techie, just a poke-around-and-try-it kind of computer user. Fact is, I don't use html often enough even to remember the syntax (yes, I know it's simple, but my memory is better spent to remember lyrics :-)) so nearly every time I want to use a tag, I have to View Source to remind myself how--which yes I had to do for the little italic and bold I used in this post.

Testing marquee!

I guess there's an html practise thread somewhere we should be using for this but now we have thread drift instead...

Anyway I hope that's enough to get you pointed in the right direction, both for marquee and finding out more about other effects that pique your curiosity too.

Personal Pages, Personal Messages and Logins are now permitted. New Membership has new terms. All subject to change at any moment with no notice.

We are enforcing a zero tolerances policy on that-of-which-we-do-not-speak. Suspensions for violations are guaranteed. If you do not know what that is, you probably don't have to worry about it, but avoiding polarizing ideologies and hot button subject matter is strongly advised.

If you have any questions about this email me.

Let us tread gently forward.

Have a nice day.

Michael, to see how Kat did running text (or how anyone did anything):
Go to the page with the feature you want to learn about, then View Source (about halfway down the list I get when I right-click).
For this thread, in the window that opens, scroll wayyyy down to line 2947 to see how Kat got her result.
Have fun!

The samples of smileys, and all kinds of other shapes & stuff ~~~ posted by MtheGM copy to my Word as being from a font called "MS Mincho." MS Mincho appears to be an "extended Unicode" font that contains a fairly rich set of "oriental(?)" characters, along with most of the Latin A characters, so it may be of use for persons who write a in both "eastern" and "western" languages. English text using this font isn't particularly "pretty" or readable (IMO), but it should be serviceable enough if needed.

Since it's a "large character set" loading it may burden some computers, especially for older OS versions if they've got a lot of other fonts installed. It's one of the "standard fonts" in a default installation of Vista, but may not be available to users of older (Windows) Operating Systems. Even if that particular font is on a machine, the OS/browser may choose a different one to render characters outside the font selected by the user.

Some browsers can apply "looks like" translations to select an alternative font that contains extended characters, so glyphs like those illustrated may be visible – or not – by people reading your posts. Most current browsers (and wp programs & such) can "find a font" containing any properly defined character if it's identified by its Unicode Character Number, but characters using "symbol utilities" contained in some OS versions and in some wp and browser programs are "variously successful" since some of those methods rely on local "glyph maps" that use non-standard character numbers along with a special font.

For any character that isn't on your keyboard it probably is still preferable that you insert your "special character" in a post at mudcat using the html code and the Unicode char number

To show ❂ you would type ❂

To show ♞ you would type ♞

To show ☹ you would type ☹

To show ☎ you would type ☎

To show ❤ you would type ❤

To show ✂ you would type ✂

To show ☜ you would type ☜

To show ☸ you would type ☸

To show 〠 you would type 〠

To show ☃ you would type ☃

To show ✌ you would type ✌

Unicode defines character numbers for about 4 million unique characters. Some of them might be considered "cute."

Most "western computers" are capable of entering and displaying approximately 2,000 characters that are in most common use.

That means that approximately 0.0000535 percent of the characters you can "theoretically" post here will be legible while the rest of them will be meaningless and illegible.

It is suggested you don't f**k around indiscriminately with the 99.99465 percent that aren't going to work.

If you feel you MUST USE a character that's even remotely questionable, you need to check the preview box and look at what's going to appear IF you post it. If you can't read it in the preview, it's fairly likely that nobody else can either.

(Even if you can read it, about half of mudcat readers may still be unable to read anything more than a little unusual, and there's no monetary value in getting tagged with an "Amos Award.")

John

Wysi - I don't know that any of us will know whether the "Trace" will make it to a personal page until Max lets us get to them again.

A workaround I've used is just to copy the thread URL for a place I might want to get back to and paste it in Word. Save the Word doc someplace handy. (Usually this only for places other than mudcat, but it will work here too.)

In Word, you can set the option to convert URLs to links when you type something after the end of the URL, so that you can just click to open your browser and go to the page directly from the document. A similar option may be there in other WP programs. If that option isn't handy, you can just copy the URL and paste it in a browser addy bar.

Just curious-- if I hit "Trace" on a thread now, will it end up on my personal page once those are restored, or do I need to figure out a workaround?

Thanks,

Then Monkey Business, good to see it again
