A lovely nurse from Bulgaria has just put on my wife's flight (medical??) socks for her operation. Her trick was to place a small plastic bag over the end of the foot first, and then the sock slid on very easily indeed. The bag can then be removed through the hole at the end of the sock!

My socks don't have holes. The first ones I had do, but I can't get them now, only ones with toes. I have to roll them right up and unroll them on.

Penny S

If your socks have any nylon or orlon (common synthetics) you can probably cut the toes off with a hot knife and the threads will seal together enough to minimize ravelling.

Alternatively, cut them with scissors and "seal the edges" by rubbing them gently with a small soldering iron.

If they're pure cotton or wool, cut with scissors, lay a small bead of "white glue" on the cut edges and "rub it in" with a small piece of paper towel so it doesn't make a "lump."

I'd suggest trying any of these on one sock before doing a drawer full, as results do vary.

"She says" it would be better to cut them off and do a zig-zag stitch along the cut edge, but since she won't let me use her sewing machine I can't offer an opinion on her delusional crackpot hallucinations.

John

Herself (the occupational therapist) says that she's pretty sure that those are what's called "TED hose" (TED is a brand name). The thing with the bag is a fairly common technique - so is smothering the foot with talcum powder.

Penny, are you in the US? She says that the open toed ones should be available at Walgreens, and I just checked Amazon.com and there are a lot there.

Not in the US, unfortunately. But some time when I feel like it I'll use the stretchy zigzag to bind and then cut.

The poster, of course, is gargoyle
Sooo....I have boarded my KLM flight from New York (US) to Stockholm (SE)

Along with the ear-plugs, and sleeping mask, there are "flight socks."

To prevent thrombosis (Tricky Dick Nixon syndrom) I begin to place them on each leg;
1. Clear plastic placed over each foot
2. Sissors - removed from overhead to remove each toe.
3. Hot knife - secured and plugged into arm-rest video display

Flight diverted to Detroit - with USAF fighters off each wing.

Give me un-edited "clone powers" for 60 minutes a weeks (7.5 minutes a day) sweep every two hours....I cane return this forum to "original intent" - AMERICANA - before the next election

Do KLM allow scissors and knives on board? (Or maybe that is the point you are trying to make - if so, sorreee.)

My girlfriend's first pair came with a pair of neoprene-palm gloves. They grip extremely well. Great for sticky jar lids too. The same gloves are available in any work-wear or gardening store.

Do pilots wear flight socks I wonder? Because if not, and they don't suffer from DVT any more than anyone else, it would seem the socks aren't necessary for flying. I've used them for varicose veins, and they do support the vein walls preventing swelling. But I never had much trouble getting them on, just rolled them up. They're very expensive here in UK. (Decent ones, I mean)

It seems as though they are about twice as much at Amazon-UK as at Amazon-US, and the selection is much better at Amazon-US. Amazon says international shipping is available. Search for "compression socks".
