Subject: DT Corr: Goodbye Chiquita
From: Joe Offer
Date: 26 Nov 11 - 07:10 PM

TonyP sent this MIDI. The lyrics are from the Digital Tradition. Any background information on the song, and any corrections needed for the DT lyrics?
I listened to the Easy Riders recording and added a number of corrections. Note that the songwriter was Terry Gilkyson.

GOODBYE CHIQUITA (GOODBYE MY CHIQUITA)
(Terry Gilkyson)

CHORUS
Adios, farewell, goodbye my chiquita,
My love for you was never my crime,
Adios, farewell, goodbye senorita,
I leave the love of a man in his prime.

I'm a rambler, I'm a gambler, a get rich quick scrambler,
I follow the laws that I make on my own,
Had to run to, take my gun to, south of the border,
But I ain't the kind who can live all alone.

CHORUS
Adios, farewell, goodbye my chiquita,
My love for you was never my crime,
Adios, farewell, goodbye senorita,
I leave the love of a man in his prime.

Just a-riding and hiding, my time I was biding,
Till I met my love in a small village square,
Took her off right beside me with nothing to guide me,
Nothing but stars shining down in her hair.

Like a fool I adored her---took her back to the border,
So we could be married till death do us part,
But the posse was waitin' and the wild gun of Satan,
Shattered the love in my poor darling's heart.

CHORUS
Adios, farewell, goodbye my chiquita,
My love for you was never my crime,
Adios, farewell, goodbye senorita,
Adios to love that died in its prime.

Terry Gilkyson and the EASYRIDERS did this song on an old LP. 1950's I think the hit song for them was "MARYANN" (Down by the seaside sifting sand---Even little children love Maryann...) God knows why I saved these lyrics. The tune was pretty nice as I remember it.

Terry Gilkyson is named as composer (no other listed) on the album "Marianne."

The first line can be found in old trad, but the rest seems to be late composition.

"My" is not part of the title. Should be "Goodbye Chiquita."

Very little information except that Bear has released a set on the EASYRIDERS (including this song).

Q, can you direct me to other songs that use that first line? Note that I made the corrections you suggested. The DT version came from Art Thieme's post in this thread (click). Note that the Kingston Trio recorded this song as "Adios, Farewell." Is there a "Rosalita" song that's related to this?

Well, the title made me flash to the Mexican song "Adiós, Mariquita linda", which was featured in 1939 in the Clark Gable film "Only Angels Have Wings". But aside from the theme of parting, the texts bear no strong resemblance. I wrote some additional bits (in English) for "Mariquita", so no surprise I'd think of it.

It was sitting at the top of a cliff. Very tragic song.

I'm a rambler, I'm a gambler (Title in DT), aka Rye Whiskey.
The "rambler-gambler" line appears in some versions of the Wagoner's Lad, the Rambling soldier, etc.
It is the first verse when the "Adios, farewell" verse is used as a chorus (see www.traditionalmusic.co.uk)

Oh, darn, Q. I thought you found another song with "Adios, farewell, goodbye my chiquita." The rambler-gambler stuff is so obvious that I missed it.

I can't say that I believe this song has anything to do with bananas, but this link will lead you to more than you would ever want to know about Chiquita Brands International.

I'm sorry Joe.........I understand better now.

So then I guess Carmen Miranda had a big hit with this?

Well, I didn't want to say it, Spaw, but that was my point. The seminal recording of this song was by Carmen Miranda and her Easy Riders....They all wore matching headgear.

Tony sent me a MIDI for Goodbye My Chiquita while I was on vacation. Here's his attached message:

    Hi Joe,

I attach a midi for "Goodbye My Chiquita" (lyrics already in DT). Also can supply lead sheet with guitar chords on request as PDF or various other formats . I've posted a link to the original 78 recording on Youtube on an mostly unrelated thread (Lyr Req: Marianne) as it's on the flip side of the original 78 of Marianne.

    Cheers,

    Tony

I think of bananas every time I see this thread. I guess I'd better post the lyrics.

Original version:

I'm Chiquita banana and I've come to say
Bananas have to ripen in a certain way
When they are fleck'd with brown and have a golden hue
Bananas taste the best and are best for you
You can put them in a salad
You can put them in a pie-aye
Any way you want to eat them
It's impossible to beat them
But, bananas like the climate of the very, very tropical equator
So you should never put bananas in the refrigerator."

1999 revision:

I'm Chiquita Banana and I've come to say
I offer good nutrition in a simple way
When you eat a Chiquita you've done your part
To give every single day a healthy start
Underneath the crescent yellow
You'll find vitamins and great taste
With no fat, you just can't beat 'em
You'll feel better when you eat 'em
They're a gift from Mother Nature and a natural additional to your table
For wholesome, healthy, pure bananaslook for Chiquita's label!
Lyrics © 1999 Chiquita Brands L.L.C.

from Bonnie Shaljean (don't know if it's official):
I'm Chiquita Banana and I'm here to say
Bananas give you energy for work and play
And the calories count, I am so happy to state,
    In the medium banana's only 88 !

from Stilly River Sage (I'm sure this is not official, and she probably got detention for it)
    I'm a Chiquita Banana
    And I'm here to say
If you want to kill your teacher
    Here's an excellent way

    Just peel a banana
And drop it on the floor
And watch your dumb old teacher
    Go skidding out the door!

from 2641 Frey Court:
    I'm a chiquita banana
    And I'm here to say
    I'm the top banana
    In the world today
    I am the top banana...

from Metchosin
The Banana Slug Song (To the tune of Chiquita Banana)

I'm Hermita Banana and I've come to say
We slugs swing in a special way
Before el fresco dining on the doggy doo
We Pulmonata Lumbada the whole night through
You will find us in your garden
    We have the telescoping eye-ayes
    For Kamasu-ta-ra positions
We would surely win the prize
But Bananas like it cool not at the very, very tropical equator
So check your Organic produce, in your refrigerator.

We at Mudcat Central would like to thank you all for your wonderful contributions....but we can't bring ourselves to do that.
