Lou and Peter Berryman, veterans of the folk circuit can be found at the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkley,Ca. on Sat.,Jan 21 at 8 p.m. pt. On line the concert will be presented by Concert Window, 11 pm et (cost: 3 bucks). In the interest of full disclosure I should say that I'm not making a dime from this endorsement. It's just that I feel that Lou and Peter are two of the funniest, most entertaining (Romney would call them zany) people on earth, and hope that a lot of you will catch this show.

...and the next day, Sunday January 22, they're performing at 3 PM at a house concert in Auburn, California. The concert is hosted by my friends, Sharon and Jaya Carl, http://www.auburnhouseconcerts.org.

As I expected, their concert this afternoon was delightful, a nice mix of old and new songs from performers who feel like old friends - especially since they come from where I come from. They say they try to do a California tour every January, so they can get away from the Wisconsin weather. In that context, they said that they had written a California song, but they apparently didn't want to perform it for us Californians. Anybody know what their California song might be?
In its place, they sang "Your State's Name Here," which I haven't heard for quite a while.

I love it when they come to RI. The last time I saw them may have been at a house concert in MA.

Joe, Luddite that I am, I couldn't get into the lyric section of the Berryman web page. On Saturday they did a song about a would be prospector who decided not to go to California, I suspect they did that at their Sunday concert as well. Sorry, Elmore

Hi, Elmore -
I'll bet that's the one California song they were talking about, but they decided not to sing it on Sunday.
The Berryman CDs are on this page, and there are links to lyrics for about half the CDs - you have to have Adobe Reader installed to read them.

I'm guessing it's "Spray them Gold" on the We Don't Talk about That album, which I don't have.

So, the Berryman concert I attended was Sunday, January 22. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have copies of their Yah Hey! (Original Wisconsin Songs) CD on hand, but I decided to take a chance and order the CD from them - they don't charge postage. Well, heck, the CD arrived today, Thursday January 26. I thought they'd fly home on Monday and take a coupla days to recuperate, and then process the CD orders. At best, I figured I'd get the CD sometime next week.

This CD cost $15 and it was worth every penny, but a number of their reissues come in plastic sleeves instead of boxes, and they charge only $10 for those (postage included).

Now, let me tell you about this Ya Hey! album. Much to my disappointment, Peter and Lou have a collection of Wisconsin songs that they do not perform outside the State of Wisconsin. Since I've been an exile in California since 1970, I have never had a chance to hear these songs. I have asked them to do some Wisconsin songs at California concerts, but they have always refused, saying that people from the rest of the world just wouldn't understand these songs.

Now that I'm listening to this precious CD, I can see why Peter and Lou don't sing these songs outside Wisconsin. You folks just wouldn't understand. To me, these songs are outrageously funny. If you haven't lived in Wisconsin, you just wouldn't understand.

And now I know why so many of you just don't understand me.

I come from Wisconsin.

love,

-Joe-
