Looking for the lyrics and chords to the Lou and Peter Berryman song "Hard Work and Perseverance." A MIDI would be great, too.

Thanks,

Genie

Gee, the chorus is all I can find:

    Hard work and perseverance,
    Grim determination of the soul.
    I'd say from your appearance
You could use a little self-control!

I think I've heard them sing the song, but I didn't buy that particular CD, We Don't Talk about That!

If I remember correctly (and I might well not) it was Hank who sang it at Sunnycamp. But I don't even know Hank's last name, let alone whether he's a 'catter.

Mary?

Cheers,

David

I'm always of two minds about requests like this. On the one hand, Mudcat is a fabulous resource. On the other hand, the song is copyrighted, and it seems as if the best thing to do would be to buy the CD. (?)

On the other hand, the Berrymans have already made a lot of lyrics available on their web site. I believe all the lyrics are available for their two most recent albums--and one of those albums is a 2-CD "greatest hits" compilation. I'd be willing to bet the only reason they haven't posted lyrics to all their songs is that (1) it's a lot of work and (2) they figure fewer people would be interested in their more obscure songs. And maybe even (3) posting all their lyrics would look too much like egotism and they're rather modest people.

But of course, in case of doubt, it wouldn't hurt to ask.

When I've heard them in concert her in California, they've said that they have a number of "Wisconsin songs" that they don't perform outside their home state - and I gather most of them aren't on CD. They say that nobody on the West Coast would understand them. Being a Wisconsin Boy, I'd like to hear something from home. Anybody know anything of their Wisconsin songs?

Beer and Cheese and Snow
Madison, Wisconsin

But just for you, they've put the entire lyrics of their 2002 Wisconsin-based CD on the web...

Yah Hey

Graham.

HARD WORK & PERSEVERANCE
Lou & Peter Berryman
       C            G7                C                G7
1. A mama fly she laid two eggs and left 'em on the floor.
   C          G7               D7             G7
An arbitrary breeze arose and blew 'em out the door.
    F             C               E7             Am
One landed in the parking lot, the other with a splat
      Dm             C          G7            C
Was blown into the Shangri-La of one decaying cat.
Subsequently they were hatched as maggots Dick and Doug,
And Dick upon the cat became a fat and healthy bug,
While Doug he starved and languished on the asphalt where he fell.
One day they met and Doug said, "Dick, how do you look so well?"

         F                  C
CHORUS: Hard work and perseverance,
F    C    F             G7
Grim determination of the soul.
F                   C
I'd say from your appearance
G7                              C
You could use a little self-control.
2. A couple yellow pencils tumbled off a pencil truck.
One careened across the berm and ker-plopped in the muck.
Subsequently rescued by a hobo and his troop,
He was used to alternately scratch and stir the soup.
The other pencil bounced into the royal limousine,
And plunked into the slot that was the cleavage of the queen.
His years were spent in splendor gazing out across the moat.
One day he spied his tattered friend and penciled him a note: CHORUS

3. A couple grapes were lounging separated from the bunch.
A grackle grabbed 'em both but then she sneezed and dropped her lunch.
One fell down the chimney of a winery below
And plopped into the mash that was to be a fine Bordeaux.
The other grape had landed on a raisin-drying rack,
Destined for a Danish in a bar in Fond du Lac.
Through a fluke they ended up upon the same buffet.
The raisin said, "How did you get so fancy, s'il vous plait?" CHORUS

[The first half of each verse has the same melody as the second half.]

How in the world do they do it? I find rhythm and rhyme so hard, and they (esp. Peter with the lyrics) manage to produced these intricate works on the the most unlikely topics.

Thanks, Lou and Peter.

Certainly, due caution should be exercised in violating the Berrymans' copyright. Their copyright notice warns:
