Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: Rapparee Date: 05 Feb 12 - 03:36 PM Bull. It's just voice over IP (VoIP) and subject to the same problems you have with your computer connection. There ain't no free lunch, dude. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: gnu Date: 05 Feb 12 - 04:39 PM Turnip truck? I tried to explain that to my buddy but I think he fell off the turnip truck yesterday. And, he switched to Rogers from Bell Aliant. Explained to me how much coin he was saving over the next twelve months and then over the follwing twelve months even after they jack up the fees. Plus, only during the first year will a cancellation of service result in a $10 per unused month of the first year be charged. I asked if he had a signed contract. Nope... did it over the phone. I said, "Well, sounds like you struck a bargain. Good for you." |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Feb 12 - 12:31 PM My sister was going to get this one as soon as they were able to port numbers, but that didn't happen soon enough or some other reason so she got a different system. I have a cell phone and I ported my house phone over to Google Voice. It's a one-time fee of $20, but now when I'm using in a browser that I'm signed into via my Google account from, every phone number is a Google Voice link. If I mouse over and click my cell phone rings and as soon as I pick up it rings at the number I want to call. If you have a phone plan that has enough minutes you can use those instead of paying for a house phone, but that home number is yours to keep as part of the Google Voice account. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: Beer Date: 06 Feb 12 - 01:08 PM I have a friend who uses MJ and loves it. I thought about going that way but my brother in law called me a few days ago on G-mail to my land-line. Free across Canada and the U.S. Spoke to my buddy in California and several others across Canada since then. No charge. I'll call you later on this afternoon Gnu. Going out to walk the dog. Adrien |

Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: Beer Date: 06 Feb 12 - 03:18 PM Who sends you so much spam Kim? Magic Jack? Ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Feb 12 - 03:23 PM The gmail he used is probably actually using Google voice. They're all tied together. Google Talk is there also, but it is also instant message and can set up video links. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: gnu Date: 06 Feb 12 - 04:48 PM Beer called. Read him 5 on 5 on his mic. Had a great chat. No need for a cell phone as I had read on Wiki. Free. Ya gotta like that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 06 Feb 12 - 05:38 PM Magic Jack works for me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: ranger1 Date: 06 Feb 12 - 05:51 PM Me, I like my good old landline. Works when the power goes out, only costs me 30 bucks a month and I use a pre-paid phone card for my few long distance calls. I maybe spend 30 bucks a year on the phone card. I have no plans on ever getting a cell phone, I've done OK most of my life without one, why start now. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: SINSULL Date: 06 Feb 12 - 07:17 PM I have been using MagicJack for a couple of years now. Two "minor" problems: first my Caller ID says Alabama and confuses some and second, after 60 minutes my call is disconnected. I do the hour plus occasionally with one or two friends. Otherwise the connection is fine, the service is as good or better than a land line and it is cheap. SINS PS When the power goes out (rarely) I have a cell phone with pre-paid minutes. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: kendall Date: 06 Feb 12 - 08:07 PM But don't you have to leave your computer on? |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: Greg B Date: 06 Feb 12 - 08:56 PM I prefer Morse code. |

Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: gnu Date: 06 Feb 12 - 09:22 PM Cell phones should only be used for emergencies. The WHO has said there MAY be a link with tumours. I know two prominent NA docs, one is a bigwig at NYU, a relative, who say cell phones cause tumours and they don't need any more studies. I gave mine up a few years ago after my cousin had his FIRST brain tumour. That wasn't too long after I had a tomour removed from my parotid gland. Yes, I know... some here have told me it's a load of crap. I choose never to use a cell phone again. My choice. Your choice and mileage may differ. BTW, my fate was a nasty operation and the recovery was awful and lasted months. I lost my business because of it. My cousin loss the use of his left arm, left leg and speech. Was it really the cell phone? I don't care. I will never use one again. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: EBarnacle Date: 06 Feb 12 - 10:49 PM I got a Magic Jerk when they first came out. I was dissatisfied as I had a different high speed protocol than the one they accept. When I tried to return it I got a lot of snot from their people because I had destroyed their packaging while removing the piece. If I were able to find a real land address for them, I would return it to the company. Use Skype and avoid these bastiches. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: Beer Date: 06 Feb 12 - 11:07 PM Skype is fantastic. Use it everyday to connect with love ones far away. ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: beeliner Date: 07 Feb 12 - 12:59 AM The WHO has said there MAY be a link with tumours. I know two prominent NA docs, one is a bigwig at NYU, a relative, who say cell phones cause tumours and they don't need any more studies. I didn't know that the WHO were still performing, but leaving that aside, there has been at least one, maybe more, threads here on this subject. If cell phones cause tumors, it is due to processes unknown to science, which is to say, possible but unlikely. The frequencies known to be hazardous are MILLIONS of times shorter than cell phone frequencies. They are hazardous because they knock electrons out of their orbits, which cell phone frequencies do not. I lived in Germany for nearly ten years, during which time I used a cell phone exclusively, and frequently. No tumors. BUT... Every time I wash my car it rains. Car washing causes rain, I don't need any more studies either. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: SINSULL Date: 07 Feb 12 - 09:21 AM Magic Jack isn't free and yes you have to leave the computer on to hear the phone ring. Since I work all day on the phone I take great glee in NOT turning on the phone at home. Leave a message (even if the computer is off) and I'll get back to you. SINS |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: gnu Date: 07 Feb 12 - 05:05 PM beeliner... one of the top neurologists at the NY State School of Medicine disagrees with you. I don't care who is right. I don't use cell phones anymore. You fill your boots. Have fun. Talk it up. Makes no difference to me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: beeliner Date: 08 Feb 12 - 08:58 PM beeliner... one of the top neurologists at the NY State School of Medicine disagrees with you. I don't care who is right. I don't use cell phones anymore. You fill your boots. Have fun. Talk it up. Makes no difference to me. Does he explain, or even theorize, by what specific process this occurs? Or is it just, as I stated re carwashing, post hoc ergo propter hoc? If you could give a link I will certainly check it out. I don't have a closed mind on the subject, I do have an electronics background, working for years near rf transmitters with hundreds of thousands of watts of ERP, and never heard of anyone developing ANY sort of malady therefrom, cell phones blurt out a few watts at most. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: bobad Date: 08 Feb 12 - 09:08 PM I had a magic jack once.....never did get her name. |
Subject: RE: BS: Magic Jack (free telephone?) From: gnu Date: 09 Feb 12 - 03:11 PM You BAAAAD bobad! beeliner... no links. He's a relative and he and the other doc out west don't like cell phones. As for the WHO, I am sure you can find a link. And, I am sure there will me more links as the data comes in. Like I said, feel free. Me? I am free to not use a cell phone. |
