Just heard June and the boys on Jules Holland, singing "Love will tear us apart".....I think its a Richard Thompson song.

I was unbelievably good...magic. Anybody else lucky enough to hear the performance??

its definitely not a Richard Thompson song
It's a traditional Joy Division song

It is a UK show. Don't think you can see the video from outside the UK unless you use one of those clever internet thingies

I did see it and felt the performance was good. But I also thought it was a shame to choose a much-covered modern song, rather than showcasing their wonderful collective talents with traditional material. In that sense I thought it was a missed opportunity to possibly win over an audience who may not touch "folk" with the proverbial barge pole.

But who am I to tell such luminaries what numbers to choose for national telly?

Sorry about the wrong attribution, but it does sound like vintage Richard?

Don't entirely agree foggers, a good song transcends all barriers.
I recently heard Neil Finn and Roddy Frame doing some accoustic versions of their popular stuff and it was as fine and emotional as any traditional material.
I'll always be a "traddy" first and foremost tho'   :0)

A perfect example of what I been by essaying. I wonder, if Ian Curtis was still alive now would he and JT have done a duo album by now? Or would be be singing The King of Rome in collaboration with Sigur Ros?

They should get more songs on the Friday programme, which is always billed as an "extended" version of Tuesday's but is actually a completely different hour, recorded in the studio before the Tuesday live one goes out. I suppose they felt they had to "do the single". I thought they were the only decent thing on there, and Dexys were just dreadful.

I always feel that I'm playing catchup (never was even approximately up to date, parental influences and all that) so I tend to ignore what might be vaguely contemporary, and the relevant shows, there being a lot of good stuff I don't know, so why suffer the dross.

I am one of those fans who feel JT is unlikely to mislead me, so I gave it a go, never having heard the song before. I've heard the title, and I've heard of its author, though, and I've even heard a few Ob tracks before thanks to JT. I wouldn't rave about it, but found it OK (believe me that's a pretty big step) it just seemed a bit short on substance for my taste, as do most of the few modern songs I hear.

Ah well, it's a dull day that I I don't find something new. I may keep a weather eye open for more. Definitely better than a large proportion of what gets broadcast.

Maybe I was unimpressed with the song choice because my misspent youth coincided with the height of Joy Division and then everyone seemed to cover that song.

Folkacious; Dexy's were more than dreadful, for the first time ever in my adult life I actually flushed with embarrassment for another human being and just how excruciatingly awful it was. We had to switch off their closing number. Tragic!

Must admit to being a little disappointed at first by the song choice. I was expecting something more folky. But as it went on I really enjoyed it.

Hiya,

I luv 'Ragged Kingdom' to pieces. Tabor's more to my taste with Oysterband than on her own. I wish all her stuff was like that. Not to be listened to on a bad day though as I feel completely wrung out afterwards.
