BS: problem with working from home

For the last 4 days I have been laid up with a throat infection. If I worked at 'an office' I could just ring in and say I won't be coming in. because my office is at home, 3 times this week I have had to get out of bed to do an 'urgent' piece of work.

Anyone had similar problems?

When you are self employed, there are no excuses. If you want to bring in money, you have to report to yourself.

But on the other hand there are still far too many Bosses whose workers
live in fear of taking off any time for sick leave
if they want to keep their job...

and at least you can work at home
in nothing but comfortable underpants you might not have changed & washed for well over a week...

Even the most progressive caring employers would not tolerate
that level of informality in their offices......

Another good point is, ya can fire yerself if ya get seriously outta line. And then rehire yerself, but at reduced wages....only after gettin' down and beggin' on yer knees, of course.

A mirror is helpful. Don't spare the language. Yerself needs to hear what ya got to say.

Oh, yes. I have *so* been there.

I used to be a freelance researcher, writer, editor and general wordslinger for hire. I remember dragging myself to my desk to write a research report despite a rocketing fever, and doing hard-copy edit when propped up in bed to recover from surgery to repair a badly broken ankle.

Now, while we still have a mortgage to pay, I adore my government job. But just watch my dust when the mortgage is done ...

Had a home office because I covered a twelve state territory. Ended up being on call 24/7. And bakers always had problems at 4AM.

Not to mention all the clients that send you something just before a long weekend because they want to take the weekend off, needing it by Tuesday morn, and will NOT pay you even close to what THEIR client is paying them. I stopped taking those. Lost some work but overall, the coin is about the same so it's better.

I did the bulk of my working life in a home office setting. I had many of the problems described above. Luckily, I was very healthy - until I retired. Then all of a sudden I needed major surgery. Maybe I shouldn't have retired.

I am reminded, though, of Dave Barry's line: Something like "The good thing about working at home is that you don't have to get dressed until 4:30, when the pizza guy arrives with breakfast."

Not true, of course, if your work involves meeting with clients/patients/customers, unless they're VERY tolerant.

We have just subscribed to MS Office 365 so I can see my office email from home and perish the thought - my Blackberry!

But no way will I look there at the weekend.

I also work from home and have, on and off, a lot of my life. One of the first tings one must learn is that IT IS OK TO TURN THE WORK BRAIN OFF. You get to set up your own standards for what is really urgent.

One tool I use seldom but appreciate when I do use it is the auto-reply to emails-- when I fall off the map literally or figuratively, I construct the appropriate NON-APOLOGETIC auto-reply.

You might want to think about this when you get better, for "next time."

What on earth are you doing standing on a map?
