Subject: BS: Telstar launched From: kendall Date: 10 Jul 12 - 07:26 PM 50 years ago today the world changed forever. The first communication satellite, Telstar, was launched. It made it possible to see any event that was happening anywhere in the world. |

Subject: RE: BS: Telstar launched From: Ebbie Date: 10 Jul 12 - 08:12 PM It was a momentous event with far-reaching consequences- it led directly to our thinking that we have to be in touch all the time. :) |

Subject: RE: BS: Telstar launched From: Joe_F Date: 10 Jul 12 - 09:34 PM I saw it go over -- must have been when it was very new, in the summer of 1962, in Cambridge, MA. I ran into the kitchen of my rooming house & told the people to come out & see it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Telstar launched From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 11 Jul 12 - 05:36 AM ISS passes over most people on Earth and is brighter than any star, yet almost none know or care. People have lost the sense of wonder. |

Subject: RE: BS: Telstar launched From: Ebbie Date: 11 Jul 12 - 12:17 PM Almost 25 years ago I worked at a wilderness lodge in southeastern Alaska. Part of my job was to turn off the generator at night. Afterward I would sit on the porch steps of the lodge, luxuriating in the non-manmade noises around me. The trees rustled, the Taku river waters splashed, somewhere an owl called and was answered by another from a different direction, sometimes the lone wolf howled from the deep forest, and I watched as a satellite traveled steadily around the sky and disappeared. |

Subject: RE: BS: Telstar launched From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 11 Jul 12 - 12:33 PM What ever happened to the Pony Express? Telstar was owned by A T& T. It was small, only 77kg, whereas the new Echostar XVII is a hefty 6100kg. Its service only lasted six months, but it is still in orbit. (Info gleaned from google and Wikipedia. The same year, 1862, Telstar Drugs opened in Calgary, Canada. Its large rocket-shaped sign has been taken down, but is preserved by Glenbow Nuseum. Echostar XVII will facilitate rapid communication in Canada; Xplornet Communications will use this satellite to "provide high-speed broadband to rural Canada." "No Hiding Place." |

Subject: RE: BS: Telstar launched From: Bonzo3legs Date: 11 Jul 12 - 01:47 PM Telstar by the Ventures is one of the worst cover records that I have ever heard - no excuse from the Ventures who have generally been appalling after the original Walk Don't Run and Perfidia which were great, and their respective B sides. Telstar by the Tornados (please note no E!) was little more than a novelty with a good guitar solo. The drumming by Clem Cattini was just about as twee as it gets. Still it was 50 years ago. |
