I had 90% of a tooth containing early 1950s mercury fillings drilled out yesterday, then rebuilt using best modern materials. It is, to say the least, very tender this morning - but better to keep the tooth!

So, you have to consult a thermometer now, eh?

Well the amalgam filling certainly stood the test of time; I wonder will the 'best modern material' do the same? Rather like sound recording in fact: you won't really know until you reach the future. If the tooth remains tender to bite on, it's either a too high filling (easily done - easily fixed) or an abscess developing; anyway go back for a quick check.

Ouch! I'm glad the work is done and hope you are happy with the results.

Thanks, It is gradually settling down now, my dentist described the work he did as "serious gum and tooth surgery", and he is one of the best. It was interesting, albeit rather unpleasant, that the final polishing was done using a very slow speed drill, which reminded me of going to the dentist in the 1950s!

The tooth seems to be getting less sensitive now, I just have to make sure that cold and hot drinks are not too cold or hot!

Take a good single malt (but be careful that it doesn't fight with pain-killer pills if you are taking them).

My sympathies. I tend to class dentists with Al Queda bombers and the like.
