The Union Star was floundering, her fate was known by all.

The rugged coast of Cornwall is well known to those who sail.
Fight the sea when the gales blow, many were doomed to fail.
From Penlee Point the lifeboat came, her name was Solomon Brown.
From Mousehole came her gallant crew, eight men of high renown.

Seeing the local lifeboat stations while on holiday in western Ireland, I wondered how they organised in that country. I was surprised but pleased to learn that the one organisation covers both countries. It does make sense to do it that way, but common-sense solutions frequently fail to prevail.

Yes Joe.
It is funded by public subscription.
They do not even claim salvage.
They have refused offers by governments to nationalise them because then they would have to compete for their budget and risk "rationalisation" of their stations which is what happened to the Coastguard.

The radio traffic between ship and lifeboat is the most extraordinarily dramatic and tragic thing I have ever heard.
After the helicopter is forced to give up and there is no hope, the skipper casually asks them to try and get his wife and daughters off, though they all know it it is almost certain death for the tiniest chance of life.
The Penlee skipper calmly and casually agrees.
It sounds as though they are arranging a lift to the shops.
I expect the girls were listening and they were sparing them the hopelessness.
My uncle was following it all. His son said that speaking of it was the only thing he had ever known make him cry.

For those too young, or not near enough geographically, to know the story, here is a Wikipedia entry to give some background.

I have seen somewhere a recording relating to the failed rescue, with the radio traffic overlaid. The moment when contact is lost stays in my mind and reduces me to tears. I expect it can all be found on U-tube or similar, but I can't do that right now.

It may not be how it's spelled in the song(s), but I'll take the word of the Penlee Lifeboat Station itself and spell it Solomon Browne.

I would point out that on his album entitled "One for All" Paul Sirman calls the song 'Soloman Browne'--note spelling.

I listened to the YouTube recording and searched for a couple of key phrases, and had no luck. If you can transcribe the song and post it here for us, that would be a wonderful thing. I don't think you want an American like me trying to interpret what I hear.

The melody is "Lakes of Pontchartrain." That much I know - but I can't understand many of the words.
