Do you think the extinction of newspapers is respondsible for the loss of these valuable good natured cultural touch stones?

Or is simple mortality to blame.

I've been to Charles Schulz' grave site in Santa Rosa, California. It has a 'Peanuts' statue nearby but the headstone itself is simply his name and military rank in WWII.

I remember what a touchstone Peanuts was for more than one generation. During the 60s a famous poster had a pregnant Lucy with her fist in the air: "This is YOUR FAULT Charlie Brown!"

Also loved Calvin and Hobbes snowman assemblies. I remember being in a set of offices on the North Slope of Alaska with many of these taped to the walls.

Also remember a good natured comic strip from California called "Gordo" It depicted the activities of a Mexican worker and his family. His nephew was always picking on their house cat "Poosy Gato!" The drawings had distinctive charm and expanded cultural awareness.

Gary Larson has also done a couple of children's (?) books.

I nearly wet my pants with joy when I found out Bloom County was back. I have the whole run; also "The Far Side."

Walt Kelly wrote "We have met the enemy and he is us" in "Pogo."

To my earlier list add "Dilbert," "Kudzu," "Boondocks," "For Better or for Worse," and "Pogo," although three of the four aren't published any more (two because of death). "Li'l Abner," "Red Ryder," "Alley Oop," and others brightened my childhood as a lonely, abandoned, child living in a broken crate with little if any food back on the windswept, desolate, prairies of Illinios.

I heard Calvin was going to make a return, but have seen nothing. Best comic line IMHO " We have met the enemy, and they are us (Capp). Mike

Today's strip on Snoopy as Fred Astaire was a classic from 19 June 1969:Reminds me of my dog Ralph, who died in April. Ralph was lazy and good-for-nothing, but he always got excited at dinnertime. And he made me laugh.

My personal favorite was published in the Sunday funnies, in full color, with Charlie Brown and Snoopy.

Charlie Brown orders: "Heel."

To which Snoopy retorts: HEEL??
Here's a heel!
And here's some toes...
These are my paws...
And this is my nose!

Heel! Toes! Paws! Nose!

By now, Snoopy is carried away by the momentum of the Happy Dance,
while Charlie Brown stands to one side, helpless and wide-eyed.

Here's a heel, and here's some toes
These are my paws, and this is my nose!
Heel! Toes! Paws! Nose!

In the final frame, Charlie Brown, eyes rolled toward the heavens, mutters, "I bet I could get an even trade on a hamster," as Snoopy dances on:

Here's a heel, and here's some toes,
These are my paws, and this is my nose!
Heel! Toes! Paws! Nose!
Oh, yes!!
Oh, yeah!!

In recent times, I've gotten a lot of good chuckles out of "Get Fuzzy". The art is quite good too. It features an evil cat, much more evil than Garfield. Garfield's evil is a kind one can't really take all that seriously, after all...while Bucky Katt is downright murderous, at least in his intentions. It's a good thing he's small.

A favourite Peanuts strip: Charlie Brown, Linus & Lucy are lying on the grass, looking at the sky. They start to describe the shapes made by the clouds. Linus and Lucy have very detailed, extensive, elaborate descriptions. "What do you see, Charlie Brown ?" "Well I was going to say a horsie and a duck, but I think I just changed my mind."

Another early character was Pigpen. He was a disheveled, smudgy-faced kid with, I believe, a fly constantly circling his head.

I can't remember if the other kids ever noticed. He lasted for quite a while but never did much.

The black kid was Franklin, btw...

The black kid was originally named Roosevelt, Schulz said that he named him after Rosey Grier.

Peppermint Patty, whose 'schtick' was calling people by different names than they normally used, called him Franklin, and somehow that name stuck.

Yes, that was the very early days of "Peanuts". As I recall, Lucy was younger than the others when she entered the cast, but she soon grew to be a force to be reckoned with. Then Linus came along as her baby brother. A long time after that they had another baby brother, Rerun.

Violet had a strong personality, and she never vanished from the strip, but she sort of got sidelined by many of the more popular characters...and Patty even moreso. Patty and Violet were often seen together. I'd forgotten about Shermy, and I can't bring to mind just what he looked like, but I do remember the name.

The "original" characters were Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Shermy, Patty(who had blond hair) Schroeder(who apparently was Patty's brother), and Violet. Snoopy was always a major character.

The first "football" story had Violet holding the ball and saying, "He'll kick my hand! I just know he will!". She panics, pulls away, and Charlie Brown falls, and she says, "You didn't kick the ball, Charlie Brown...Why didn't you kick it?"

Snoopy vs the Red Baron

http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=5595#32133 l

And for anther tale..... Snoopy the Red Baron and Christmas Eve

The Allied command ignored all of its men
And called on Snoopy to do it again.

Twas the night before Christmas, 40 below
When Snoopy went up in search of his foe
He spied the Red Baron, fiercely they fought
With ice on his wings Snoopy knew he was caught.

Christmas bells those
Christmas bells
Ring out from the land
Asking peace of all the world
And good will to man

The Baron had Snoopy dead in his sights
He reached for the trigger to pull it up tight
Why he didn't shoot, well, we'll never know
Or was it the bells from the village below.

Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ringing through the land
Binging peace to all the world
And good will to man

The Baron made Snoopy fly to the Rhine
And forced him to land behind the enemy lines
Snoopy was certain that this was the end
When the Baron cried out, "Merry Christmas, my friend"

The Baron then offered a holiday toast
And Snoopy, our hero, saluted his host
And then with a roar they were both on their way
Each knowing they'd meet on some other day.

Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ringing through the land
Bringing peace to all the world
And good will to man

Christmas bells those Christmas bells
Ringing through the land
Bringing peace to all the world
And good will to man.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Schroeder is, of course, a man [or boy] of parts. Not only can he play Beethoven to maestro standard on his toy piano; he is the best [in fact probably only decent] member of the Charlie Brown All Stars baseball team, for which he is Catcher. He is also the only one who can get the better of Lucy, by playing hard to get.

As far as Peanuts was concerned, Charlie Brown was the confused little kid that earned sympathy. Agreed that Lucie was the right winger and capitalist.

My sometimes hero in the strip was Linus. He was the only one that "understood it all;" - even if understanding meant he knew that he couldn't do anything about it, so he just grabbed his blankie and sat back and tried to stay happy.

A more recent artist that probably not too many have heard of is Richard Crowson. He's one of the political cartoonists (single pane zingers) and doesn't run every day, or even regularly; but he snatches the point pretty well. Also the banjo in a local (Wichita) band with some great compositions. With more exposure, quite a few here would appreciate him, I think; although lots of his stuff is sort of "local" and means more if you watch the news here.

I thought Linus was a great character, Eddie...probably the most complex and interesting personality in the entire ensemble.

Remember when Linus was quite young and Lucy would tell him outrageous tales about various stuff, he would take it in thoughtfully, and Charlie Brown would be grabbing his stomach in pain over what Lucy was doing? One time she told Linus a big story about how the white, fluffy clouds overhead were huge balls of discarded cotton from garment factories. Charlie Brown was getting ulcers over it, but Linus just took it all calmly in...and no doubt saw through it a year or two later.

Another incident I recall from the very early days of the comic was this: Lucy and Charlie Brown are walking down the sidewalk. They both freeze in horror when they encounter a mysterious object in their path. "It's a bug, it's a bug!!!" yells Lucy. "It's a piece of fluff!" yells Charlie Brown. It turns out that one of them has a phobia about bugs, the other about pieces of fluff. Unable to agree as to what the object is, they turn around and go back the other way, still shuddering at the awfulness of the bug...or the piece of fluff...as the case may be.

Boy, did those kids have some strange psychological problems. ;-)

I pretty much agree about James Bond. Sean Connery was the quintessential James Bond.

The story goes that when the producers were auditioning for the James Bond character, they were getting a bit frustrated. Nobody met what they had in mind, partly because they, themselves, weren't all that sure. But when Sean Connery came through the door, they looked at each other and said, "There he is!" Why Connery, they were asked? One of them responded, "He walks like a panther!!"

I always felt Roger Moore seemed a bit "wimpy." One critic commented that Moore played Bond as if the Bond movies were "drawing room comedies."

Other than Connery, I thought Timothy Dalton (three Bond movies) was excellent. Dalton had read all of Ian Fleming's novels and wanted to return Bond to what he felt Fleming had in mind. But the producers didn't like it. By now, Bond had become pretty much of a comic book character, and they felt that Dalton played him too seriously. Not enough "sense of fun!"

PTUI!!!

Robert L. Short's Christian-oriented "The Gospel According to Peanuts" (1965) was a huge seller.

Of course, that was before Jerry Falwell and neo-literalism grabbed America's religious spotlight.

Schultz marked the introduction of ZIP codes with another new character, a kid named 5. (He had siblings named 3 and 4.)

Like Franklin, you could tell that 5 was more of a political point than a person, and he didn't last.

Right. Franklin. Thanks for jogging my memory on that.

I really liked the original ensemble...Lucy, Charlie Brown, Linus, Schroeder, Patty, Violet, Snoopy...I thought they all worked well as characters, although Patty and Violet didn't figure as largely as the others. The only character that I felt didn't work too well was "Pig-Pen", because he was basically just a one-trick pony.

When Sally Brown came along, she fit in just fine, causing much additional stress to the ever-stressed-out Linus.

The addition of Franklin seemed pointless to me...just a token "black" character to make the comic seem racially inclusive and therefore politically correct. There appeared to be no other basis to including him as far as I could see, so it seemed artificial to have him there. Not a problem, really...but it just seemed arbitrary to me, and symptomatic of the political times. "No one can say I don't have a black kid in the strip now..."

The addition of Woodstock, the bird, has always seemed trivial to me too.

As for Peppermint Patty and Marcie...they did have some funny moments at times. I just don't like them as well as I did the original cast.

It might be like the way people will always tend to see James Bond as the first actor they saw playing him? (Thus, I always saw Bond as Sean Connery...while a friend I have who is 20 years younger sees him as Roger Moore.) (Daniel Craig, however, has more than made up for the past recently...I think he might be the best James Bond of them all.)
