I hear ya Bill D. But FB has a Mudcat page and a number of pages I care about, including mine, so while Mudcat will always be my "go to" website, FB fills the gap that MC cannot fill. It's just that simple. And, even more si, I need not choose one over the other.

I remember.. and used... AOL chat, IRC, PowWow,(who remembers PowWow?) ICQ and even the Mudcat chatroom. I didn't quit them... it's just that everyone else did, and talking to myself is not always interesting. Facebook is a little different... partly because they have worked out how to sell ads. I have NO idea what SnapChat is, and won't be chasing it.
Google Plus is not doing too well, partly because it duplicates too many Facebook themes... and I can barely follow ONE social media! I really prefer to trade information in a forum like we are using right now on Mudcat. I can FIND earlier stuff easily and don't have to scroll thru all my 'friends' stories about their dog, tomatoes, or copied cartoons in order to find something relevant.

I am a member of Support/Report Live Music in NB. It works BIG TIME for artists and venue owners. There are even venues "out in the sticks" that get patrons from the cities to attend which they NEVER would have gotten w/o FB.

I've found that if I post gigs on Facebook, we have a full, or nearly full house. I'm surprised that no one else has mentioned this.
When I ask folks where they heard about the gig, the majority either heard about it on Facebook or from someone who heard about it on Facebook. It's a lot easier, cheaper, faster and effective than going around putting up posters.

I'm sorry you've had bad experiences with FB - on the other hand it does help you stay in touch. and as I get older anddon't commit to long journeys with quite the relish that I did whilst young - well it lets people know I'm still above ground and thinking with affection of many of them.

I actually enjoyed Facebook. I kept in touch with my daughter in Italy and my son in Australia and exchanged photographs and video's. I reconnected with guys I went to college with and people who once lived in the area we grew up in. Unfortunately some undesirable cloned my page and copied all my photographs, gigs, demo's and family and Photoshopped photographs of my two daughters and added offence captions to some of the pictures. Facebook refused to close the fake page and ignored me. I have since closed my page and stay well away from social network pages.

It can spread disease and it can heal. It's up to the users of FB. Kinda like it's forerunners with more rules, balances and checks.

For those that shit on it, yer outta line so go back above the line. This is the BS section of Mudcat... a true forerunner of FB but without rules except one. If ya don't know what the rule is, join FB.

Well, I do not appreciate some FBers like me. Some people just can't stop harping about something(s) such as when I share anything and everything (negative) to do with fracking/oil/coal/nuclear/similar problems. With some people, it's anything about the environment or politics or war or corporate greed and, for some, it's EVERYthing. I do like people who share "fun" in whatever form.

Will it suffer a great decline? I'm gonna guess no. People like to bitch and they like to laugh and they like to champion causes. FB struck the Holy Trinity on a worldwide basis, much to the chagrin of governments and big business. I'd ask who funded the "research".

Facebook like an infectious disease, will lose 80 percent of users, says Princeton study

Keith Wagstaff NBC News

Using epidemiological models used to study the rapid spread of disease, the researchers found that Facebook has "already reached the peak of its popularity and has entered a decline phase."

How bad will it get? Facebook will lose "80 percent of its peak user base between 2015 and 2017," according to the researcers. To explain why social networks are like infectious diseases, the study pointed to similar research done with ideas.

Ideas, like diseases, have been shown to spread infectiously between people before eventually dying out, and have been successfully described with epidemiological model ... Idea manifesters ultimately lose interest with the idea and no longer manifest the idea, which can be thought of as the gain of "immunity" to the idea.

This study hasn't been peer-reviewed and Facebook, which currently boasts 874 million users worldwide, would certainly object to being compared to a viral epidemic. But the company itself admitted in October to losing teen users. Later, a study by digital consultancy iStrategy Labs claimed that Facebook had 25 percent fewer teenage users in 2013 than it did in 2011. (Apparently, American teens are susceptible to a new virus called Snapchat).

[Seems like a good idea?]

You don't have to share anything you don't choose to, and you don't have to hear from anyone or anything you don't choose to. If a piece of info ain't IN there, it can't be violated.

I've been put off getting into Facebook because all I've read about it makes it sound like sharing more information than I care to share or to hear about from other people. The way it's done in the Mudcat is more my style.

It may be I've got hold of the wrong end of the stick, but kendall's comments at the start seem to confirm my reservations.

Also I can't understand how it works, and my impression is they keep changing it, and adjusting the options for privacy and so forth.

Yes you can control it to what you want to receive but I found that all took up time and effort.

Good riddance...

I find it useful to keep in touch, day to day, with my family in the UK. I do share some political stuff that interests me and some of the funny stuff. I just don't go in there too often - maybe once a day and then for a time limit.

I signed up to facebook, but never used it or even looked at it. After a while they started to bombard me with emails saying "Do you know ...?" and suggesting I should get in touch with this person.
All the people they were urging me to get in touch with had the same name as someone I had emailed once, several years earlier, after buying something from him on ebay. Did they get the name from my email address book?
What concerned me most was that they might be bombarding other people, urging them to get in touch with ME. As I never looked at my facebook I don't know if any of them did. Eventually I deleted my membership and after a few weeks the emails stopped.

My husband deleted his Facebook account in February. The rest of this post is his own words...

I spent the first two or three weeks finding myself going to look at Facebook, but after that, I haven't given it a second thought. I haven't missed anything from it, and when I've seen [Firecat] using it, I haven't had the slightest bit of interest in what I've seen.

I deleted it because I was putting too much into it for the little I got out.

I don't miss it, and I don't regret it, and it's had no effect whatsoever.

Then I check out pottery sites, starting with one in particular and maybe a feew others if time and energy permits. No problem with nutso stuff, totally ignore ads. It is a support group, a place to garner info and communicate with friends and family. Once in a while, I check out other stuff. I enjoy what I learn and what people are thinking.

I approve of things like AdBlock, but they so often demand that you use specific browsers, or 'latest' versions of browsers. I, for various reasons, do not always want to use the 'latest' browsers with 'features' that I do not care for, so I will continue to rely on Proxomitron, which works with everything PC I have used so far.
I do have AdBlock when I use Firefox, but rely on Proxo when in Opera... which is 92.374% of the time.

Note this remark about AdBlock: "Some webmasters have used JavaScript to detect the effects of the popular Adblock filters.[33][34] This is done by generating a honeypot-like URL, verifying its delivery, and DOM verification after the web page is rendered by the web browser, to ensure the expected advertising elements are present." (my bold added) Google uses some sort of trick like this to ensure, even in Mudcat, that it delivers ads, and I have to use one higher level of Proxomitron filters to combat it when necessary. I can turn OFF all those filters with one click when I want to help Max by clicking on some ads.

AdBlock Plus works, but you have to learn how to use it.
If you don't want to have to block ads individually, you have to subscribe to a filter list. This is not difficult, but I think people give up because it takes 20 seconds and thinking to figure it out. All I know is that AdBlock Plus works great for me, and I can use a browser without AB+ if I want to see what others see.

You can somewhat adjust how much information you get from friends. Click their name or picture, click the arrow by the "friends" button and change the annoying people from "friends" to "acquaintances".

Or you can start a new group. I have one I call "people who post crap", and I don't get any of their stuff in my feed, but I can still go to their page and see what they've been up to. I do this with crusaders and those who post 20 or more music videos a day.

You can unfriend people who don't post anything you want to read. They aren't notified in any way when you do that.

Joe F - There are a couple of ways to filter who is actually displayed in your newsfeed, and you can Disappear those whom you don't wish to actually unfriend but whose updates you don't want to see. You can mark people's names with a designated category ("close friends" "acquaintances" etc) and only view specific choices in your timeline; or you can simply un-tick their "Following" box. So it's easy enough to keep organised, and the fan pages can quickly be unLiked too.

I tend to agree with Laptop - FB has been a great communication device for me (so's Mudcat, for that matter) in connecting up with people I last saw 40 years / three countries ago and would otherwise lose touch with, and allowing the sort of daily casual chat that can be a lifeblood artery to friendships. I've also found a lot of useful & interesting info and articles.

You do have a number of options as to how you use it, as Stilly indicates. "A great sucking sound as available time is wasted there" LOL! But that applies to most of the internet. Overall, though, as long as some controls are applied, I've been enriched by it.

PS: A girl reported missing in Cavan (but Gardai had reason to be searching at the other end of the country, in Cork) was found in record time because of FB's communication network. They have a Trace Missing Persons page showing photos/last-whereabouts etc, and this lassie got over a thousand local shares in less than an hour. So it's a serious info dump.

You can control what you want to see and what you don't want to see on Facebook. If you're seeing stuff you don't want to then you don't know what you are doing and it's probably a good idea to dump it.

I ignore a lot of stuff on FB. I refuse a lot of friend requests and send a PM saying "see ya in the pages" but no thanks. What I do not ignore is the stuff that matters to me. FB connects people. FB educates people. I educate people about fracking by directing them to my FB group Frack. There are only about 130 members and there are only about 6 members that regularly contribute (daily) but there are many readers. The regulars glean info and post. In just a few months, these regulars have gleaned over a hundred links to prove a point.
