Subject: BS: Dog Oil any comments? From: Mr Red Date: 05 Jun 15 - 03:14 PM Because it was mentioned to me for a cure for arthritis I was mildly interested. I may get that ailment one day. So I went looking. Mason's Dog Oil seems to be recommending itself for a range of ailments. And it refers to Ambrose Bierce as if his name would add credence. I am a huge fan of the Devils Dictionary and his treatise on Oil of Dog confirms the reference to rather put Dog Oil in the category of Fuitloopery (As New Scientist likes to put it) aka Snake Oil. It should be wild throughout the western hemisphere. There are perhaps, a dozen ways to use this elixer. Subject: RE: BS: Dog Oil any comments? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 06 Jun 15 - 03:29 AM A small point on pronunciation - St John's wort rhymes with dirt and hurt and Bert. I don't know if there are any records of Saint John having warts. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dog Oil any comments? From: Mr Red Date: 06 Jun 15 - 05:14 AM LOL I will continue with Pure Neatsfoot Oil (NOT the "Compound") - it is cheap and a mighty fine placebo. Though I have heard from an old Black Country Chemist, when I originally bought it for my Bodhran, and since from "Steven Fry, On QI, Who cannot tell a Lie ! " that it was used to hasten the mending of broken bones and arthritic joints. Oslers, apparently, suffered less from arthritis than their contemporaries. You can get the "Compound" from equestrian shops but the "pure" variety has only been seen on the internet. Last Sidmouth I was determined to avoid an ache on the sole of my foot that Ibuprofen only partially solved (cream & pills) in 2013 (3 dances per day, 2 on tarmac). Well, let us just say Neatsfoot is a mighty fine placebo. And just to put it in context, there was a BBC Horizon programme on placebos (may still be on iPlayer), and it was confirmed there by Havard Medical School that even knowing the treatment is a placebo does not diminish too much of the efficacy of Placebo. Brain scans showed the endorphins were almost as prevalent as with conventional pain killers. It gets weirder. Sugar pill anyone? |
Subject: RE: BS: Dog Oil any comments? From: frogprince Date: 06 Jun 15 - 09:50 AM Mr. Red's post takes me back to my experience with night time leg cramps. I had been having frequent painful bouts, and I heard about putting a bar of soap under the sheets. We had some little motel bars around, so I tried it. At least 80% effective. I then raised the question in a previous thread as to whether a placebo could be effective even if you have no faith in it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Dog Oil any comments? From: Mr Red Date: 07 Jun 15 - 07:23 AM frogprince - check out the BBC iPlayer and look for the Horizon programme on Placebo - it will open your eyes. Specifically on knowing it is a placebo. If you think about it there are words in the English language to point to the very real phenomenon. viz placebo, hyperchondria, psychosomosis, mind over matter, visualisation, hypnosis, meditation, and something that has been known since doctors were invented "Doctors bedside manner". And more contentiously IMNSHO I include homeopathy. And the programme clearly shows research that the physician's approach as a big part of the success of any medical consultation. But the brain scans were quite revealing - there is a real physiological effect going on there. I can't mend a broken bone, but it may reduce the pain you percieve. |
Subject: RE: BS: Dog Oil any comments? From: GUEST,The oldest banjo player in Franklin County ( Date: 07 Jun 15 - 05:34 PM Yeah, one very important (IMVSBRO) question. How is dog oil acquired? Does one squeeze a dog until oil flows. Is it like fracking? I am a friend to all dogs and must object mightily should a dog suffer harm in the process! Tom |
Subject: RE: BS: Dog Oil any comments? From: JennieG Date: 07 Jun 15 - 08:52 PM Indeed, Tom......and how oil does one dog yield? Obviously a chihuahua would yield less than - say - a bull mastiff or Newfoundland. Also, doe the quality of the oil vary between breeds? |

Subject: RE: BS: Dog Oil any comments? From: Paul Reade Date: 08 Jun 15 - 08:30 AM Re. Dog Fat song (from "Raggytash" above). The song was written by Jack Lee from Rochdale who ran a number of clubs there for many years, and was still running one when he died earlier this year - see http://www.folkimages.com/hobo/menu.html Dog Fat by Jack Lee (originally – see below) 1 One day a knock came on the door and when I answered it An old man he were standing there, he were having a coughing fit I asked him what's he selling and he quickly doffed his hat He coughed and sneezed and cleared his throat and then he said "Dog fat". Chorus: Come and get your dog fat, dog fat oh he cried That's the only ointment that can penetrate your hide Rub it smartly on your chest or rub it on your back If you've got a pain you'll ne'er complain if you rub it with dog fat. Dum a diddley di do, dum a diddley day. 2 Dog fat is fair for falling hair, it cures the griping pain If you use it neat it's good for your feet, makes cripples walk again It'll surely take spots off your face and burst boils on your back It'll cure with ease rheumatic knees, oh rub 'em with dog fat. 3 My dad has always wanted curly hair on his bald head But medical science can't do a thing, that's what the doctor said But yesterday he rubbed a lump of dog fat in the strands When he got up this morning he'd got hair all over his hands. 4 There used to be a girl who thought her figure was not complete Oh yes, she had a pretty face, and her legs were rather neat But her chest was flat, so she used dog fat as bust developing cream But she found another little bust had grown in between. 5 Constipation were troubling Ada Plum, it drove her in a tiz She'd heave and strain and squeeze her head, but still she couldn't biz Then she took a dog fat suppository and quickly lost her frown She had to get off toilet twice to stamp the bugger down. 6 Well it's good for your lungs and it's champion for your heart And it cleans out your stomach, every last little part And if you want a contraceptive girls, dog fat's the thing for you Just stick a lump between your knees, it sticks like bloody glue. Dog Fat - The Guilty Men Verses 1,2, chorus Jack Lee Verses 3,4 Slightly adapted by Paul Reade (couldn't remember Jack's original verses which are):- 3 My dad has always wanted curly hair on his bald head But medical science can't do a thing, that's what the doctor said But yesterday he rubbed a lump of dog fat in the roots When he got up this morning he'd got hair down to his boots. 4 There used to be a girl who thought her figure was not complete Oh yes, she had a pretty face, and her legs were rather neat But her bust was small, and though she tried all the ointments from the quack Now her bust is forty-four, with rubbing 'em with dog fat. Verses 5,6 Tony Downes, who I seem to remember sang with Martin Lynott (ex-Beggarmen) at one time. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dog Oil any comments? From: Donuel Date: 19 Apr 20 - 06:24 PM My Mom was an expert spinner (spinning wheel). Looking for a challenge and cheap source of fiber she got the idea that a dog groomer would have plenty of various near exotic fiber. The yarn was soft and angora like, especially Collie. She made a pair of mittens for me and they worked great, untl they got wet. Nice and warm and tan. If they ever touched snoe ther immediately released an nvisible clound of an aroma of WET DOG. Even if I took them off my hands reeked of wet dog. No matter how much fabric softener or Febreze I tried nothing would cut the oder. I wore them for a time when it was dry outside. I have not gotten arthritis so they must have worked. We raised bees so we knew the folklore about bee stings virtually curing arthritis. Look it up yourself and be the judge. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dog Oil any comments? From: Mr Red Date: 20 Apr 20 - 02:13 AM dog hair fibres - I have heard of a keen wool spinner in the UK who had a particularly hairy dog, I am thinking Lab sized, but do they molt? She collected all the hair from the brushing/clippings and washed it then spun and knitted it. The only remark I remember was that it was soft. Placebos - Curious observation currently is with CBD - hemp (think cannabis without THC) in coconut oil, though it is grease below about 20o C. I had a ganglion on the ball of my foot for about 2 years, no real problem, doc confirmed it. You can persuade them to go away physically, and it came back. 1 week of CBD and it vanished! During this COVID hiatus I had a curious ache in the same ankle which, as a keen ceilidhnaut, I worried if this was the end of that. Ibuprofen gel helped but CBD seemed to see it off. I think the lesson is: if there is a correlation, and the cure doesn't bankrupt me, am I going to ignore any implied coincidence? Or say "what the hell"? And even before COVID, I was buying CBD chocolate bars for a lovely neighbour who, in his 80s has heart trouble and prostate surgery. His missus can't drive. They are grateful for the occasional bar I put through their door. At his age he needs all the placebos he can muster. |
