Subject: RE: Camp New Harmony: 2015-16 Workshop signup
From: Joe Offer
Date: 04 Jan 16 - 01:51 AM

I got home from camp this evening. We had fewer people, but still a lot of campers. I think some stayed away because camp was a few days later than usual - January 3 is the latest day we end camp. It's all based on what day of the week Christmas falls on. Can't say I understand the formula for determining the dates of camp.
I think some people stayed away because we warned them that construction at the camp would make it a bit harder to get around this year. It was more difficult, but we made it work.
SF Folk Music Club members, feel free to post any comments or suggestions below.
Thanks for coming. I had a great time.

I'd like to do Musical Theater song swap on Wednesday, preferably 2 hrs. consecutive in the carpeted room. Looks like the only time available is lunchtime, but that's OK I guess. Alternatively, 1 hr at Reuben's house. Please don't conflict w/ other popular singing workshops. Thanks!
Hi, Kathrine. I put you in Yellow Room 22 late afternoon. Nothing available midday.

I'm leaving for camp on Monday morning, December 28. I will keep online workshop signups open until I start working on the schedules at camp, probably the afternoon of Tuesday, December 29 - I'll post a notice here when I close down-and that's when I'll post any workshops entered here after this message. After that, please sign up for workshops on the boards in the screened room in the Dining Hall building at camp.
I will update schedules approximately noon and midnight daily while we're at camp.
See you there.
Dress warm! High temperatures will be in the mid-50s, and lows in the low 30s. No rain predicted.

Hi Joe - I had requested a double slot for the "Songwriter's Circle Works-in-Progress" in Yellow Room 22 on January 1 from 4 to 5:50. It seems to me that there are quite a few songwriters at camp. I wanted to ensure time to talk about the works in progress and support each other in our songwriting.

Could you please add add "Songwriter's Circle Works-in-Progress" in Yellow Room 22 from 5 to 5:50?

- Susan
Hi, Susan - I'm glad you caught that. I fixed it. Merry Christmas!

Updated to this point. 24 Dec 2015
    Little Jack Horner
    Sat in the corner,
    Eating a Christmas pie;
    He put in his thumb,
    And pulled out a plum,
And said 'What a good boy am I!'

I have to give myself a little self-affirmation to do today's scheduling work. What I really want to do is take a nap before I head off to sing at Midnight Mass, and then go home and sleep a few short hours before heading back to sing at 7:30 AM. Christmas is another word for Cruelty to Choirsingers....

Hey Joe -

Can I have the Study Center on Wed from 3-3:30 for Sea Chanteys?   And I'd like to move my English Music Hall on Wed 1-1:50 in Rubens to 2-2:50 in Rubens.   Thanks!
Assuming you don't really want a 30-minute chantey session, I put you down for 3-3:50 in the Study Center for Chanteys, and in Ruben's House 2-2:50 for Music Hall. Right?
I'm looking forward to an extra hour for chanteys.

Can you give me another hour of Swing Band practice on Saturday from 3:00 to 3:50 pm in the dance hall and I can prepare, for three hours in the Dance Hall? It would be appreciated. Band singer/singer practice (same wordage).
Also I heard that Dan Hicks has liver cancer and I want to do a workshop on his music at Reuben's House on Thursday from 1:00 to 1:50 pm. Title can be "Dan Hicks Songs". Thanks

Joe - I would like to do a workshop called The Grand Come All Ye Ceilidh
in Cabin 6 on Friday form 3-4:50. It'll be a xperimental run of the multi-genre ceilidh some of us were discussing on the Harmony list a little while ago.

I have some other workshops in mind, but I can wait to get to camp to sign up for them

Sounds like fun, Ed. It's on the schedule, as requested. We had a keg of beer and lessons on how to "pull" a pint at the ceilidh I went to in Scotland this summer. Will beer be provided? Can we steal from the cache for the John Barleycorn workshop?

Joe - I seem to have contributed to an abundance, not to say a superfluity of dangerous, wily, heroic, and otherwise obstreperous women in the titles of this year's workshops. May I alter my Thurs 4pm workshop to "trad songs of Bad Decisions"?   The idea would be to bring traditional songs in which the story hinges on someone knowing better but doing something dangerous/naive/foolhardy anyway. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not. This workshop is not limited to ballads. thank you! Casey Casebeer
I noticed that we had an abundance of "Women with Attitude" workshops. Thanks for balancing it a bit.

Joe, If it's not too late, I've been asked to do a flatpicking workshop, and I'd like to do a song workshop as well. To wit:
1: A Dozen Ways To Work A Flatpick: accompanying songs on guitar.
2: Pete Seeger's 'Story Songs': Songs from his excellent 1961 album of that name.
I'll be there Wednesday and Thursday. Sorry to be so late with this. Thanks! -Ray
Hi, Ray - I've put you in "Yellow Room 22" (Camp Katan) next to the dance hall. I've heard it's a nice space. Seeger a3 PM Thursday, Flatpick at 3 on Wednesday.
    -Joe-

P.S. I had to shorten your flatpick title - not enough space on the schedule.

Hi Joe,
I would like to schedule to Swing Night performance practices in the dance hall at 3:00 to 3:50 and 5:00 to 6:00 on Saturday.
I would also like to schedule 12:00 to 1:00 and 1:00 to 2:00 Friday in the Dance Hall for Swing Night pre-practice.
I would also like to pre-practice on Saturday in the Carpeted room 2:00 to 3:00 pm.
I know that will cover my schedule.
If you could combine Saturday performance practice to 4:00 to 6:00 and move Yael's to 3:00 it would be helpful. I know that I will probably be playing for Yael's workshop any how. Thanks for all that you do to make the Camp experience a fun, rich experience.
Hi, Cris - 12-2 Friday, and 4-6 Saturday -Joe-

We are aiming to have most songs collated before Camp New Harmony. If you are interested in singing, we need to know your song choice and key. We are looking for danceable, up tempo swing songs. Please contact Cris Johnson, who will be the band leader. His email is (available thru Joe Offer, joe@mudcat.org)

There will be some optional rehearsal time with Cris if you need it, and later a mandatory run through with the band. More details to be posted at camp.If you have questions, concerns or solutions, contact me or Cris. Looking forward to some swingin' singin' playin' and dancing!

So, I hope that all is forgiven now, because I have done my best to enter all the requested workshops above (up at the top of this thread). I did not enter workshops for Yael because I don't know yet what day is the swing dance - I'll find that out for you.
Also, would the person who requested to host a workshop on English Music Hall Songs please give me your name?
Let me know as soon as possible about any mistakes (perish the thought) or changes.

Thanks.

Hi, Jennifer - I may have to shuffle you a bit. Ruben's house at 3 PM is like the best spot there is, so it's not quite fair to give it all to one person.
I'll get to work on filling in the blanks on the schedule this week, now that I have a significant amount of stuff to put in the blanks.

Hi again! I would like to host the following sharing circles in Ruben's house:
Wed 3 PM Easy-to-Join Songs (can be call and response, or have just one line that changes each verse, or short verses and lots of repetitions of chorus)
Thurs 3 PM Songs of Winter Celebrations (I have Hanukah and Solstice and adapted Xmas, feel free to bring more of those or Kwanzaa or Christmas or Diwali or New Year etc.)
Friday 3 PM if I can find a co-host: Malvina Reynolds/Sam Hinton songs.
Also sometime if I can find a co-host: support group for songwriters with half-baked songs.
I look forward to seeing you!

Easy to Join: Wed 11-12, Ruben's House
Winter Celebrations: Thurs 3-4 PM, Ruben's House
Malvina/Hinton: Friday 2 PM, Ruben's House [if you can't find a co-host, ask me]
-Joe-
Dec 11:
Hi Joe! Thanks for doing hthis complex job!
I think it's fine and good not to give all the same slots to one person. However I need to fine tune your shuffling of my workshops a bit, it I may.
(1) On Wednesday, I might not arrive until lunchtime. Perhaps Easy-to-Join songs could be in Carpeted Room at 2? (I would like to attend Train and River songs.)
(2) on Thursday, I really want to go to Madge's Balkan songs class, as I mentioned before I distracted you with other questions. Do you think Songs of Winter Celebrations should move to 5 PM?
(3) I found a co-host for the Sam and Malvina workshop for Friday at 11. His name is Wade Gray.
Have a sweet couple of weeks!
Jennifer

Joe, I'll be at camp Tues. through Sat. I would be happy to teach a swing dance class again on the day of the swing dance in the dance hall, and I'm also happy to teach an improv theater workshop again (in the carpeted room). I don't see the schedule yet, so it's hard for me to know what time slots to choose, so that it doesn't conflict with workshops I want to take. when will the schedule be up?
Thanks,
Yael Schy
The schedule is above (click), Yael. Just pick a time and place. I'm still trying to find out which dances are on which day.
    -Joe-

Hi Joe, Please tentatively hold the following workshop slots for me: Improv Theater Games: Fri 1pm, carpeted Rm. Swing dance: Sat. 1 pm, dance hall
Hi, Yael - I gave you 3 PM Wednesday because Swing Dance singers are supposed to practice with Cris Johnson Friday from noon to 2. I can give you 1 if you really want it.
I scheduled your Saturday Swing Dance workshop as requested.

Robert Rodriquez: Commercials, jingles, and TV/Radio theme songs (1940s to present) - Thursday afternoon. Note: Robert would like to have a cohost, if somebody would like to

I told Robert that we try to limit workshop titles to three or four words, so the title and location and leader will all fit on the little yellow sticky notes we use on the workshop boards. So, he called this morning and said the title of his second workshop is:
Don't Bet on the Prince: From Scheherazade to the Raging Grannies [Songs & Stories of Bold, Clever, & Resourceful Women]

I think I'll boil it down to just "Bold/Clever/Resourceful Women"

But it's good to give a more detailed description of the workshop here in this thread, knowing that it needs to be boiled down to three words, four at the max - and I'd rather have the workshop leaders do the boiling down, so I don't get blamed.

Jingles: Thursday, 3-4, Ruben's House
Women: Saturday, 2 PM, Ruben's House (the hour before Barleycorn)

Now, Jennifer, the idea is that YOU are supposed to pick the time and place, so I don't get the blame....

The idea workshop title is no more than 4 words, because it has to fit on the smallest size of Post-It notes. "Call-and-Response Songs" plus your name will work just fine.

The most popular venues for a cappella singing are Ruben's House and the Carpeted Room, The other venues are smaller, but may work very well for you.

In the past, we've had some very nice workshops for solstice and Christmas carols. Most of us don't take down the tree before we go to camp. We haven't had a carols workshop for a few years, so it's a good idea to do one.

I have a question for more seasoned Camp New Harmony people.
From here where I sit in mid-October, Camp seems like winter holiday time. I have some lovely Solstice songs, as well as some well-known Xmas carols whose words have been slightly adapted to make them Solstice songs.
In your experience, are people "done"' with Solstice/Xmas by the time Camp rolls around or have people enjoyed turn-of-year-song workshops?

Hi! I have not led a CNH workshop before so I don't know if there is a shortcut word meaning "each one bring one of the following type of song." Anyway, I envision a workshop in which each person brings a call-and-response type song (from any culture). The person who brings it calls, and everyone else responds.

I am not familiar enough with the sites to choose a room, nor do I much care, but I would not want to miss a concert or Shabbat or a Madge workshop to do this. Nor a meal! But otherwise, any time of any one day would be fine.

It is also fine to wait and schedule this one at almost the last minute. Thank you for organizing this!

Joe, it might be fun to have a workshop "Guess the Song from the Intro" In most cases the composers put as much effort into writing the intros as the did in the refrain. And nowadays the intros are rarely sung. Having received my copies of "Rise Again" I noticed that in most cases (not all) the intro is left out.

Fred

please do not put this opposite the rivers workshop above.

Joe Sez: How 'bout Carpeted Room, 11 AM, Wednseday?
We left most intros out of Rise Again unless they were commonly known and sung - too little space. Hal Leonard gave us 300 pages, and we hit that exactly.

Subject: Camp New Harmony-2015-16 Workshop signup
From: Joe Offer
Date: 06 Aug 15 - 12:53 AM

This is the 2015-16 workshop signup thread. For 2016-17, go here (click)

New Harmony - SFFMC's New Years Camp

Tuesday, December 29, 2015 - Sunday, January 3, 2016
Registration for camp closed December 8. If you missed it, be sure to sign up in September, 2016, to get the early bird discount.

This is an edited thread for recording signups for workshops for the San Francico Folk Music Club's Camp New Harmony. The camp is held every year during the week after Christmas at URJ Camp Newman, on the road between Calistoga and Santa Rosa, north of San Francisco. Some 300 people will be there for 6 days of song and dance and whatnot.
The Camp New Harmony Website is http://sffmc.org/harmony_body.html.

To get an idea what the camp is all about, see the threads for previous years, crosslinked above.

I'm going to use this as an edited thread to record pre-camp signups for workshops. We expect, as usual, that most people will sign up for workshops after they get to camp.
So, the idea is this: if you're attending camp and you'd like to lead a workshop, scroll down and post a message e at the end of this thread with the following information:
    • Your name
    • Name of the workshop
    • Preferred time and day
    • Preferred location

I'll enter the information in the charts below. I can't guarantee time and location, but I'll do the best I can to balance things.
    -Joe Offer-

Camp Map (to be revised)
Note the location (bottom center) of the two new Field Cabins in the area marked "construction area" - they're ready now.
Note that the "lower village" cabins have been demolished. The Health Lodge is closed due to construction, and is scheduled to be demolished if it isn't gone already. The bus route has been adjusted because of the construction.
