For some things cheques are still by far the most convenient way of doing things. For example a club collecting some payment from members for an activity. A few years back in England it was proposed to abolish cheques, and a date was set for that. But sanity prevailed.

I just had to consult the NT lexicon and the Greek word is there rendered ...fisherman..., but presumably the Wycliffe/king James chose fisher , perhaps, as as well as retaining the same meaning , it would read better than .....make you fishermen of men !....

So I pointed out that it had other meanings too (as words frequently have); in particular, and relevant to the question that was being canvassed, a synonym for 'fisherman'; as used by Jesus in the Gospel According To St Matthew. Then it appears, from you going on about senses of humour & stuff, that you meant it as a joke after all; so I obligingly said hoho; but even that wouldn't do for your wounded sensibilities, and you had to go on & on about it; climaxing in you saying I was being 'rude' — after you had o-so-charmingly concluded a post with an entirely otiose "Piss off" — which really was a laugh hohohohoho.

Each language has sexist phrases and ideas but their are certain languages that have sexism built into their grammar such as gender based nouns. Even the gender of the changes with various European languages. I suppose that is more classic than casual.

What people prefer to talk about is entirely up to them. If they prefer to talk about sport rather than clothes, or the other way round is their choice.

Observing whether the groups of women and men in your experience tend to talk in different ways about different things is interesting, and commenting on that is not sexist. Where sexism comes in is if on the basis of that you were to presume what a man or woman in a mixed group might wish to talk about.

There are differences in the way men and women communicate in my experience. How far that is cultural is unclear. It is common for men who are casual acquaintances or even friends to regularly socialise for years without knowing anything about each other's circumstances. My impression is that this would be highly unusual in women. I cannot see that such differences should somehow be seen as shameful, or something that should not be recognised.

Back in the seventies, hitching through Scandinavia, it was explained to me in one small town that the women looked after children and managing the household whilst men took care of important things like politics and sport.

Recounting this caused me a great deal of grief from my 'progressive' friends.

Locally, Academics poo poo the apparently, politically incorrect, word fisherman, prefering fisher. Both female and male fishermen continue to reject fisher, and also fish harvester, claiming they have the right to decide what they are called and the intellectual choice of of the word is condescending (additionally, to add insult, a fisher is a small, weasle-like animal). Some, in an attempt at compromise, have opted for fish harvester. But, many fishermen claim this does not adequately capture what they do.

Well, in their defense, I suspect most folks do understand what a fisherman does.
