International girl's day was yesterday. It is also nationl month of Monthly Holidays, Adopt A Dog Month, AIDS Awareness Month (President Reagan) (also December) American Cheese Month!!!!!!!!!!!! American Pharmacists Month, Antidepressant Death Awareness Month...That was just Dave the Gnome awarness second.

Our local gay pub have a sausage and cider festival. Must be a joke in there somewhere but I can't figure it out.

With so much competition for special '... days', '... months' and 'years of the ...', it seems a bit greedy to have TWO cider days each year (according to the website Dave linked to). Apple day only happens once, and even gin only has one 'gin day' a year. And any children who turn up at my door trick-or-treating on the wrong day get sent packing.

[Christmas seems to be the exception, as with only one Christmas Day it still manages to go on for MONTHS.]

I haven't drunk cider since 1973, after I had a pint of the most terrible stuff ever to pass my lips in a pub called the Gypsy's Tent in Dudley. It was warm, flat, sour and had scum as thick as cream cheese floating on top. The pub is long gone, which has probably saved a number of lives.

Sadly it's only watered down lucazade for me at the moment...

IBS and cider are not a comfortable mix...

Though I suppose I could wear brown trousers,
and look for a cider pub that still puts sawdust down on the floor...

[though finding any real cider pub around here
is becoming an impossible quest these days...]

I only use cider in pork casseroles, along with sliced cooking apples from our Bramley tree. (Husband sometimes eats pork, he calls it halal pork!)
I once tried some dodgy cider when I was a student. Just a small glass. I was as sick as a dog for ages. After that, I stuck to McEwans Export (only a half-a-pint at a time) then discovered Old Speckled Hen.
Good ale beats cider any day.

So somebody or some group of people decide that is time to have a 'sober October'.
So what? Who are these people anyway. Let them get on with it if they want to, but it doesn't mean you have to.

So some cider producers and/or cider salespeople decide to announce a 'Cider Month'.
So what? They are just trying to sell more cider. If you want to drink cider for a month, go ahead, but do it because YOU want to, not because THEY want a bigger share of your money.

Make your own decisions and don't be so easily manipulated.

I'm doing a sober October at the moment, although for me charity starts at home. I might decide to extend it to the second week in November and thereby get a complete banking month free of alcohol spending. Don't worry, I'll make it all back up over Christmas/New Year.

Regarding cider, at the end of a week on the south coast in the late 1960s I drank one too many pints of the local rough. My throat clamped up and I was unable to drink any kind of cider at all until a couple of months ago, when it started to taste quite nice again. Weird.

I suspect that there is something wrong with my taste buds. All wine tastes of vinegar. Beer has always been OK and now cider does too. Roll on next month.

Heh heh Jos! Luckily I don't seem to have any facial hair, but an old lady in our last village had quite a beard and moustache, poor soul.
She never tried to shave it off, but said it kept her face nice and warm.

I had some blood tests last week, and they all came back as 'normal'. The most pleasing one was the cholestrol result, which was classed as 'satisfactory'. Having most of my life eaten wodges of lovely melting butter on my crumpets and drunk pints of full milk and double cream, it seems my body can deal with cholesterol admirably!

Not all cholesterol is bad. When mine was tested the doctor told me it was high - that is, high levels of GOOD cholesterol. I told him I eat lots of butter and cream, and never, ever eat margarine, and he said I was obviously doing the right thing.

Ah well done Jos! I don't eat trans fats, just dairy fats as you do.

Our village centenarian Douggie says he's always eaten dairy foods, never marge, and has a small sherry or whisky every evening. He still drives, does his garden and has all his 'marbles'.
