Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Mr Red Date: 29 Jun 19 - 06:10 AM it was pure jealousy on the part of the professional game. because the men at war in WW1 - the women took up the challenge of entertaining (?) the public and it was virtually the only option around. Men returning needed a job and football was a good second income. Women had to look after the children. It was the culture then. But yes, it was a form of jealousy - money. And there were plenty of single women who lost out in the race to find a husband - even one with a wooden leg (eg)! |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 29 Jun 19 - 06:20 AM The slogan should be - "woman can do most things" not "women can do anything"; women playing football does not bother me too much but I, frankly, hate the idea of them being "At Front Lines" . |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Steve Shaw Date: 29 Jun 19 - 06:27 AM I hate the idea of anyone being at front lines equally. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: punkfolkrocker Date: 29 Jun 19 - 10:30 AM My wife was so taken with the story of the WW1 women's football teams, she started casting her fantasy BBC Sunday costume drama series with the best of British actresses.. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: gillymor Date: 29 Jun 19 - 12:16 PM "women playing football does not bother me too much", Gosh, how open-minded of you. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Mr Red Date: 29 Jun 19 - 01:44 PM Well we can't have totally open minds, things would fall...... er, bear with me there is another word there, but it has fallen er, um, bear with me.................. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 29 Jun 19 - 01:55 PM So far, nobody has been "open-minded" (Gillymor) to comment on this from above - Chesting the ball - any medical concerns among you? Bit like with media coverage of boxing nowadays where they never allow a doctor on to warn of brain damage - nothing negative, please, we are Americanised English! |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 29 Jun 19 - 03:53 PM Frankly, I myself don't have a lot of knowledge on this issue - I seem to recall a lady who played association football mentioning wearing some kind of guard, but am not sure how badly affected a ladies breasts could be from being hit with a football..? |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Steve Shaw Date: 29 Jun 19 - 04:29 PM You clearly have little idea of the anatomy of young, healthy, slim women. You appear to think that the women who play football have loose, dangly, unprotected breasts. Do get a life. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Tattie Bogle Date: 29 Jun 19 - 04:38 PM Chesting the ball? No worse than having grandchildren jump upon you from a height! And why am I on Mudcat now? Cos there's football, Glastonbury and other crap on TV! |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 29 Jun 19 - 04:40 PM I've learned something there, cheers, Dave - if you were in Phil Neville's shoes, you would not select anyone with "loose, dangly, unprotected breasts". Get a life?...about 40 countries on a shoestring, BA, equivalent of a HNC in Management, trade certificate, a couple IT certificates AND a counterbalance forklift licence...A grade junior football and tennis (with a club foot), etc. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: beachcomber Date: 29 Jun 19 - 07:49 PM I hadn't seen much women's International football until this month. The standard has certainly been excellent and the England team have looked , to date, as very likely winners of the Competition. The USA must also be so considered I think and, now that the Germans have been ousted, perhaps the Dutch will make the final ? |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Steve Shaw Date: 29 Jun 19 - 08:33 PM It's been brilliant, a credit to sport. Women's football is here to stay and deservedly so. Fantastic! |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Big Al Whittle Date: 30 Jun 19 - 12:29 AM I suppose its a bit like women's tennis. Its slower, so you can see the artistry more clearly. I like snooker for that reason. You can see a creative mind (much faster and much more insightful than your own) at work. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: punkfolkrocker Date: 30 Jun 19 - 01:07 AM I like how we suddenly got fixated on tits... best things god ever created apart from electric guitars... Walkytittyverse watches women's football with Yakety Sax playing in his head...??? |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Mr Red Date: 30 Jun 19 - 04:39 AM I have no interest in watching any football, but I would be glad if the UK Women could do well because the captain has a real burden to carry. She married a footballer and his career was cut short due to some sort terminal debilitating disease like Motor Neuron. She needs some rewards in life. I have known relatives with it, and recently a consummate dancer has been diagnosed. Imagine your one reward in life being taken. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 30 Jun 19 - 04:39 AM Turning the other cheek to the name change, PFK: there is the groin area too, of course, but one doesn't "groin the ball", unless a man fancies singing his team's song in falsetto. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Steve Shaw Date: 30 Jun 19 - 05:19 AM I should like to see crisper passing, better first-touch ball control and less playing in the air. "If God had wanted us to play football in the clouds he'd have put grass up there." (Cloughie - who else). But it's great to watch and I'm hooked. And credit to the Beeb for their coverage (in spite of that bloke commentator who blathers non-stop through the games). As for Glastonbury on the telly as well, why not? Not a lot of it appeals to me, though I like it when they show clips of past legends, but it's undeniably a great cultural institution and if they can show trooping the bloody colour they can show Glastonbury! |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Gda Music Date: 02 Jul 19 - 11:07 AM In my now 87 years I have never had cause to watch any women`s football games. This despite the fact that both my Mother (Cissy Smith) and her twin sister (Florrie Smith) b.1901 loved the game and being club members of The Dumfries Ladies Eleven used to train in Dumfries at their Palmerston Park ground during and after the 1914/18 war. My Mum (inside right) would always mention having scored a goal against the famous Dick Kerr French team, but I just wish now that I had paid more attention to all the talk and happenings of that period. It seems that they both went to Carlisle to work at the vast munitions factory for the then war effort where evidently other girls were keen too on playing and watching the women`s game. I certainly can recall the shock of 1950 mens soccer World Cup when the part-timers from the USA knocked England out, we heard it all live on the radio and yes....still shocks! However, the important ladies game tonight, Tues 2nd - USA v England I will be watching, especially for my Mum in her rightful Queen of the South position at inside right. GJ |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: olddude Date: 02 Jul 19 - 05:04 PM Sorry but that was clearly not a goal the us team simply out played them. Too many mistakes in that game and penalties |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 02 Jul 19 - 05:10 PM Hard luck England :-( You are right though, Dan. I thought the USA outplayed us. As a non-football afficionado, I can honestly say it was one of the most dramatic games I have seen. Whether that was good or bad, I just don't know. But it was certainly exciting :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: punkfolkrocker Date: 02 Jul 19 - 05:13 PM Bah... now it looks like we have to put up with women's cricket... ..that's twice as much bloody cricket... |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Steve Shaw Date: 02 Jul 19 - 05:17 PM The offside call was clearly correct. The penalty decision was as soft as can be and I was (almost) glad it didn't go in. Long balls won't wash with a team as good as the US. Nine times out of ten you just lose possession, and they are a killer team in possession. And when they lose the ball they fight like tigers to get it back. I didn't see that energy from us. Loose passes lose matches. Well done, the US ladies! |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 02 Jul 19 - 05:19 PM I'm sure Phil Neville just said "we went down to 10 men"..? Then one of the presenters said the England (not the USA) team wanted to be "bad-ass women"..? I watched about 20 minutes, after Today at Wimbledon, and certainly saw some bad passing women. Anyway, at least Alf Ramsey's English team won THE World Cup the day Yours Truly was born, in Saint Mary's Manchester - http://walkaboutsverse.blogspot.com/ |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Steve Shaw Date: 02 Jul 19 - 05:40 PM He did say that. As for me, I found myself saying to Mrs Steve things like "England need to get more men in the box..." But we're all getting there, including me and Phil (Bury and Radcliffe lads that we are). Kudos to the women/girls/ladies. They are changing our sporting culture for the good, which is what really matters. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Big Al Whittle Date: 02 Jul 19 - 05:48 PM I used to like Lyons fruit pies. you could bite off a corner , suck out the contents. and then eat the sugarry pie crust, with a nice cup of tea. Probably the EEC banned them. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 02 Jul 19 - 06:28 PM True story: Not sure if he bothers now but, a few years ago, Jack Charlton started posting on Facebook saying, e.g., how much he liked fly fishing and disliked women's football. Then one day I noticed he'd posted a picture of the World Cup winning team - saying something like who's the handsome tall chap in the middle. I added, as above, that I was actually born the day he helped us win the World Cup and, despite being born with a club foot, managed to play A-grade juniors in Sydney, Australia. He replied with "Alf Ramsey used to say I was born with 2 club feet!" |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: gillymor Date: 02 Jul 19 - 06:52 PM A nice tight match with plenty of suspense but I'm happy to see the U.S. Women advance. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: Steve Shaw Date: 02 Jul 19 - 07:01 PM They're a great team, with good possession, crisp passing and a brilliant pressing game. They should beat whichever of the other two sides they come up against. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why I dislike women's football... From: MikeL2 Date: 03 Jul 19 - 02:28 PM hi I have no argument about the result of the game. Us Women were the better side with some vey strong players; The were well drilled and their defence was better than some teams I saw in the Premier league this year !!! Including Man United !! It was an entertaining game and although Us were dominant, there were a few near shocks from a very hard working England side. cheers MileL2 |
