Subject: BS: rain for California From: keberoxu Date: 04 Dec 19 - 11:57 AM How many Mudcatters live in California? A bunch, I think. Of course Joe Offer is there. In today's weather I see that California is getting rain, pretty much over the whole state. Is it good news or is it going from bad to worse? |
Subject: RE: BS: rain for California From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Dec 19 - 01:25 AM Oh, it's good news. Our wildfire season is finally over. But at 2,300 feet, we got snow, not rain. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: rain for California From: Steve Shaw Date: 06 Dec 19 - 03:53 AM I hear that you need nine gallons of water for every almond kernel. I ate a hundred Californian ones last night. I suppose that makes me environmentally unfriendly. |
Subject: RE: BS: rain for California From: Dave the Gnome Date: 06 Dec 19 - 11:42 AM I thought it never rains in southern California? |
Subject: RE: BS: rain for California From: Steve Shaw Date: 06 Dec 19 - 01:04 PM I thought the rain never fell on the dusty Diamantina... Isn't there a place in Chile where it hasn't rained for nearly 400 years? |
Subject: RE: BS: rain for California From: Dave the Gnome Date: 06 Dec 19 - 01:10 PM I think there is probably a place in Cumbria where it has never stopped. |
Subject: RE: BS: rain for California From: keberoxu Date: 06 Dec 19 - 02:04 PM … so now California has to worry about mudslides? |
Subject: RE: BS: rain for California From: Steve Shaw Date: 06 Dec 19 - 04:59 PM On Skye, they say that if you can't see the top of Cuillin it's raining. If you can see the top, it's going to rain. Off topic, thinking of Skye I remember the pub in Broadford (way back in 1974) that had a circular sign behind the bar, done like an American coin, that read around the edge "In God we trust. The rest pay cash." |
Subject: RE: BS: rain for California From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Dec 19 - 05:02 PM Where there were fires this fall there are now lots of native grass and wildflower seeds ready to take hold with the first moisture. If it is gentle rain, that will be the effect. If it's a gully-washer, all bets are off. |
Subject: RE: BS: rain for California From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Dec 19 - 09:14 PM There are all sorts of amazing things about California, but one of the most wonderful is the Superbloom. If there's a reasonable amount of rain and snow runoff, the wildflowers in California are absolutely spectacular. The last two years were great, and I took full advantage of them. The best blooms are in desert areas that have had even a small amount of rain. The most legendary spot for wildflowers is Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in San Diego and Imperial Counties. It's not quite at the Mexican border, but I came across a rather spooky Border Patrol checkpoint in the park one time - they were watching me stop for a pee a mile away. And in the middle of the park is the town of Borrego Junction, and in the center of town is Carlee's Place, a bar that serves the most amazing seafood gazpacho (like cold, spicy cioppino). Gazpacho, beer, wildflowers, and desert bighorn sheep. What a grand combination! -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: rain for California From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Aug 20 - 03:56 PM We've had two thunderstorms over the last two weeks. Lots of thunder and lightning. I think it rained for less than 15 seconds each time. |
Subject: RE: BS: rain for California From: leeneia Date: 26 Aug 20 - 07:18 PM Joe, your description of the desert after rain sounds absolutely wonderful. How I would love to see that. Fires: I have a sister-in-law only 10 miles from Carmel Valley, site of the River Fire. She tells me she is safe, and I have to believe her. Fortunately, I have signed up for bulletins from her local TV station, so I can keep tabs on things. The Internet can be wonderful sometimes. |
